Russian President Vladimir Putin has been joined by the Turkish and Palestinian leaders at the ceremonial opening of the Russian capital's new main mosque after 10 years of construction work. The 152€m mosque - entirely funded by private donations - unveiled on Wednesday, the eve of Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha that is known as Kurban Bairam in Russia. Putin, who has been fighting Muslim rebels in south Russia since coming to power in 1999, used his speech to emphasize the challenge of preventing Muslim radicalisation, praising the collaboration of the religious leaders of the country. "Muslim leaders of Russia are courageously using their authority to resist the extremist propaganda. I'd like to express huge respect to these people who are carrying out a really heroic work..." he said. Islam is the second largest religion in Russia, home to 23 million Muslims. The majority of them live in the country's North Caucasian republics. An estimated two million Muslims live in Moscow, which has seen an influx of people from the North Caucasus, Azerbaijan and the former Soviet states in Central Asia. The new mosque - built on the site of a smaller, more than 100-year-old mosque destroyed in 2011 - can accommodate 10,000 worshippers, but it is still one of only six mosques in the city. Calls from Muslim religious leaders to build more mosques have met with opposition from city officials and residents.

A Michigan city’s planning commission turned down a request to build a mosque last week. The decision was made on the eve of the 14th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attack on U.S. soil by Islamic extremists. An overflow crowd of hundreds chanted “No more mosques!” and “God bless America” outside, after the Sterling Heights City Hall was filled to its 240-seat capacity, according to Detroit ABC affiliate WXYZ Channel 7 News. At issue was the proposed mosque’s size — 20,500 square feet — to be built within a residential area. WXYZ reported: Those against the mosque say it would cause too much traffic and congestion. A small group hinted at linking the house of worship to extremism. Mosque leaders say they offered to revise and downsize the plan, changing the dome and towers, but that didn’t work. When the decision was announced, the crowd both inside and out loudly cheered. The imam requesting the project wasn’t cheering, though. “I think it is more about ignorance,” Mohammad Ali Elah, of the Islamic House of Wisdom, told FOX 2. It’s tough to believe there could be that much ignorance about a mosque in a town like Sterling Heights. For one thing, the city is in the southeast corner of Michigan’s lower peninsula, close to Dearborn, which has the second-largest Muslim population in the Western world. Paris, which was the site of the Jan. 7 Charlie Hebdo massacre by Islamic extremists, is No. 1 in that regard. For another thing, it would have been the third mosque in Sterling Heights, so it’s apparent the population knows a thing or two about Islam. Dearborn is also home of the Islamic Center of America, the largest mosque in North America and the oldest Shia mosque in the United States. What is also clear is that for opponents, it was one too many.

"Kejadian ini memang luar biasa," ujar Amirul Hajj itu, dalam pembicaraan via telepon dengan tim Media Center Haji (MCH) di Makkah, Jumat malam. Ia mengakui akibat hujan deras dan angin kencang di Makkah, alat berat yang digunakan untuk perluasan Masjidil Haram terjatuh. "Ada jamaah kita sebanyak 20 orang yang terluka dan sudah dibawa ke rumah sakit di Jiyad, Arab Saudi," kata Menag. Selain itu, kata dia, ia menerima informasi ada satu jamaah yang meninggal namun masih membutuhkan data detil terkait nama dan embarkasi mana. "Keluarga di Indonesia harap tetap tenang karena korban luka sudah ditangani dokter yang profesional," ujarnya. Menag juga mengimbau agar jamaah yang akan melaksanakan umrah qudum (kedatangan) menunda dulu ibadahnya sampai situasi di Masjidil Haram dinyatakan aman. Seperti diberitakan sebelumnya, dilansir dari Al Jazeera, jatuhnya crane di Masjidil Haram mengakibatkan 62 jamaah calon haji meninggal dunia. Sementara 30 orang lainnya dilaporkan mengalami luka-luka. Sebagian besar korban tertimpa crane saat melaksanakan ibadah tawaf. Reporter Al Jazeera Hasan Patel melaporkan, saksi mata menuturkan bahwa crane jatuh dari lantai tiga Masjidil Haram. Saat kejadian masjid penuh dengan jamaah meski insiden terjadi sebelum ibadah shalat Jumat dimulai. "Puluhan ambulans dikerahkan ke lokasi kejadian. India's foreign ministry has complained to the Saudi Arabian authorities following an alleged "brutal" attack on a 58-year-old Indian woman in Riyadh. Kasturi Munirathinam's right arm was chopped off, allegedly by her employer, when she tried to escape from their house last week, reports say. Ms Munirathinam was working as a domestic help. She is recovering in hospital ... Saudi authorities have not commented on the incident yet ... Features ... ....
