American Dream (written by Michael J. Sielaff) Love. Liberty. And the pursuit of more... More money, more minutes, more members, more memory, More might, more machines, more methods, more mega-bytes, More miscellaneous! And this Is just the gist Of what I need So I plead To plant the seed of More, more, more, more, more- You keeping score? He's just got an HD T.V. - I gotta get one for me. She's cruising in a 2014 SUV - I gotta get one for me. They each got the new Nintendo Wii - I gotta get one one for me. We got a three year-old Jet Ski - I gotta get a NEW one just for ME! Now are you keeping score? You better be, 'cause I'm WINNING! Since you're sinning by pinning Your success down being bound around figuring life out, I've raced around buying ground for a discount. (Beatbox) Wait, what's that? Huh?! You're going to have to speak up! Yeah, I can't hear you above my 15" 2000-watt subwoofers. I was going to get them larger, but the trunk wouldn't close- What's that? You gotta speak LOUDER. I'll just text you... What, you can't keep up? You would if you started Prioritizing, compromising, and realizing, While not lying and denying, The fact you are disguising That if you want something bad enough, you can get it! This is AMERICA, dammit! The land of the freebie and the home of the rave! You can have ANYTHING! So start livin' by turning up the volume And chase your purpose: to CONSUME! Smell the fume that looms every time impulse buys Become regular tries to customize our lives To whatever is IN. Take fashion. As the 70s were OUT in the 80s and IN in the 90s, So were the 80s OUT in the 90s and IN in the 2000s. (Gee, what trend holds the key when a new decade increases poverty?) See- But it doesn't matter when the cladder of priority doesn't involve ME. So scoop up what's fresh to mesh With what billionaire strangers decide we borrow for a few months Then ship to Goodwill, demanding to still fill a hole in the heart with a pill- Take twice a day until another pay Check is direct deposited or 'til you get another loan- 'Cause I DESERVE WHAT I OWN!!! Home alone isn't lonely when bedrooms are stuffed with life-sized toys rather than boys Or girls who bring meaning to lives that are struggling for LOVE. Nobody wants needy kids when they replace auction bids. So go buy that Hummer you've always wanted and never needed. (I mean, if it's good enough for the military- What fool will mess with you for a parking spot) Yard sales, pawn shops and thrift stores are a graveyard of "Not Good Enough." Stop living in the past and start wearing a mask. Consider yourself blessed to have the instruction manual to success: Buck up, Shut up, And pay up What you CANNOT live without! Doubt Lies that tell us "Serve each other" And "Live simply so others can simply live." This mentality is Only a sieve That doesn't give ME any satisfaction! (Besides Jesus and Gandhi's words are Outdated, overrated and not created to be on a billboard). You getting all this? Bliss is only created when I'm the focus of desire, Thus I must be risen higher, Higher, HIGHER- So I am gonna indulge! 'Cause I! NEED! MORE! More perfections, collections, elections, erections, Disconnections, short-lived satisfactions. If it's not plural, what's the point? More tricked-out sports cars, more limited-edition guitars, More faces to blind date, more oceanside real estate, More gossip, more sex, More violence, more- YES! GIVE! ME! MORE! Pass the Xbox controller, Cover Girl and Budweiser. And while you're at it, You better fill my tank with more gas, My muscle with more mass, And my day with more tasks. After that? Go to sleep. Wake up 5.25 hours later. And do it all over again. After all, If I'm going to love my liberty by pursuing happiness, I'm gonna need MORE...

Pep Talk: Open Letter To Singles (written by Michael J. Sielaff) You are a catch, Michael. Yep- this is what it has come to After 27 years of singleness: Pumping up my ego just so I know it's still there. Ideally, I'd like to be humble, Slaving away in a cottage With three evil step brothers Lamenting: One my Princess will come... But that's not gender appropriate, is it? The man is the dashing Prince who Saves the beautiful servant from A life of hardship and struggle- Sweeping her off her feet and riding off into the sunset. But, hey, this guy has got dreams too. I got dreams of locking eyes with that Princess- Silently knowing the spark there only burns For each another. I got dreams of effortlessly talking to her Until the dimming of coffee shop lights confuse us- Realizing hours of conversation went By without remembering time exists. I got dreams of being challenged By her to view the traditional untraditionally. I got dreams of being joyful content By simply holding hands as we melt into one. But that's the thing with dreams- They are visions of optimism in a life where Pessimism is more appropriate. Being optimistic to find all-inclusive love Will only happen when my time and attention Is accepted a as a gift and not an option. Oh, boo-hoo, huh? "I feel sooooo sorry for you, Michael!" "You are a great guy!" "You'll find someone!" Hey- I'm not bringing this up for a collective "Ahhh" or a date. I'm bringing it up because I know there is a guy out there Who is compulsively refreshing their Okcupid profile Because she MAY have responded. I'm bringing it up because I know there is a guy out there Thinking he's not attractive or suave enough To play the game of dating. I'm bringing it up because I know there is guy Who has a crush on a friend but doesn't want to Cross the line and ruin a friendship. I'm bring it up because I know there is a guy Who is in love with a women Who's committed to someone else. I'm bringing it up because there is a guy Who has had his heart broken by a girl Who only needs him when she's doesn't have plans. You are not alone. You are a catch. You are a catch because you don't want a Responsibility-free one-night stand. You are a catch because you look into Her eyes and not her breasts. You are a catch because you realize There's nobody in the world like her. So in between excuses of "Lack of chemistry" and "I'm not looking for a boyfriend right now" Understand that it's not you. Excuses used to soften the blow hurt more Because honesty is being tip-toed around. And that's on them. Not you. All you can do is be honest with your feelings. We have a lot of love to give And it is worth more than giving it to anyone Who looks twice in our direction. Patience will pay off. In the meantime, we're ready. Ready to pour ourselves into someone. We are an army of dandelions screaming: We are NOT weeds! Like my Uncle Paul who is in his early 50, never been married, And has had one serious girlfriend. He has a house, a wooden leg and a great sense of humor. He's honest, sincere, and a hard worker. He's tired of living alone, Of not sharing life with a woman who loves him for him. Paul is ready. Paul is a catch. My friend Kevin is in his early 20s- Has been in love with the same girl for a few years now. He just graduated college, is athletic, witty and a great listener. He can get dates, But the girl he can't get out of his mind has told him "I'm not ready for a relationship" And "You're the one" in the same breath. He's good-natured about it, but it keeps him up at night. Kevin is ready. Kevin is a catch. Hearts are screaming to be noticed. This isn't a Dashboard Confessional song About the one that got away. This is a blues ballad for the ignored. Sure, Paul, Kevin and I aren't perfect- we have faults. But let's get them out of the way So they're not used as an alibi later: I'm opinionated; I can be insecure about my thinning hair and large nose; I'm a people-pleaser; I talk too much; I think being annoying is funny- I could go on, but she'll figure them all out eventually. And I guarantee she'll point out more imperfections I can't see yet. But I can't do it alone. I need her. I'm needy. And so are you. Life alone is early death. So let's talk! I want to get to know you, not lust after you. I'm not just some guy asking you out. I'm waiting to vie for the Best Listener Award, The Clear Communication Championship, Husband Of The Year, and The World's Greatest Dad- Tap into my potential! I look forward to the day I delete this poem from my collection... (finish reading poem at http://poetryzoo.com/author/michaeljsielaff/poems/2311)

Revive (written by Michael J. Sielaff) Speak in tongues that ignore convention And obey the liberty of chaos. Trade store-bought success for loss- Failure never seemed more freeing. I can't breathe routine Tucking ambition away My mind needs to stay Stuck in a dream 'Cause it's never tomorrow today. Stretch beyond means And redefine capacity- Dizzy my soul until it bleeds with excitement! Cross out I AM in impossible with a red pen permanent. Senses are used for the first time Since the day I discovered the mind Reached further than playground swings. So kick off shoes and dirty socks Until the hole in the toe becomes a gap Wide enough to explore uncharted seas. I can't breathe routine Tucking ambition away My mind needs to stay Stuck in a dream 'Cause it's never tomorrow today. Remember when? I'd rather not. My heart recalls what my mind forgot. That time I wanted to give her a hug And tell her I loved The way she was. A simple impulse not yet polluted by the insecurity of "How she would take it." Why didn't my heart move my feet? Too shy, too scared, too young- Excuses are villains left unsung. I can't breathe routine Tucking ambition away My mind needs to stay Stuck in a dream 'Cause it's never tomorrow today. If fear did not paralyze, By high school I would have united My best friends from each clique- Confident they'd get along and be in my life forever. But procrastination convinced me: No need to rush, there will always be time To say words past their prime. Just like 3rd Period when Mr. Desperation Attempts that extra little note Before the bell When all the students can think is that it's Taco Tuesday. Attention fades when distracted by future. I can't breathe routine Tucking ambition away My mind needs to stay Stuck in a dream 'Cause it's never tomorrow today. Push Fast Forward. High school bleeds into college. Don't be left behind- You don't want to be stuck in your hometown forever, do you? Time to take some responsibility! Good grades lead to financially stability While acquaintances become "Friends" digitally. And since they're only a click away, It will take years to reach them. I become more and more unsatisfied with where I am, who I be, and what's coming at me. If I could only go back to that maple tree That I used to climb 'til I stepped back and realized It was too scary But consequently, Peace of mind isn't free. I can't breathe routine Tucking ambition away My mind needs to stay Stuck in a dream 'Cause it's never tomorrow today. Growing up fast wasn't the plan But when role models are twice your age The goal seems to be to get where they are as soon as possible. Friends grow while relationships die And by the time I tried to reason why, I was given a rolled up piece of paper saying: "It's up to you now." Graduation equals no time for exploration so Child-filled jubilation turns into uncertain desperation. I miss imagination. I miss her. I miss them. I miss memories that never happened. I miss more than I move forward Wondering who I was, who I am, and who I need to be. I can't breathe routine Tucking ambition away My mind needs to stay Stuck in a dream 'Cause it's never tomorrow today. It's never tomorrow today. Never tomorrow today. Tomorrow today. Today.

Weakness Strengthened By Audrey: What Else Is New? (written by Michael J. Sielaff) It's just so easy. Google "Beautiful Women." Instead of images of Gloria Steinem and Kathy Aung; Bikini-clad supermodels, actresses and athletes Are showing off what gets them the attention- As if they patented the phrase. Search results for 'female models:' 4.25 million. Search results for 'female activists:' 215,000. Value is decided by dollar signs rather than piece of mind. Our eyes are lied to. Coaxed to indulge in shapes and curves While the shape of the modern women curves downward Until the gift of mind is a mirage. It's just so easy. Go to the magazine stand: Maxim sells out while Ms. is out selling Truth that women are not Barbie dolls to be undressed at will. But sex wins because thinking is too hard And mystery is used to being solved in 60 minutes. The brain is so polluted with skin that any attempt to clean it out Is laughed at, leaving you alone, Going through withdrawal. Prevention is the only remedy. Constant bombardment is too difficult to turn from so Let it control you. You are a machine, programmed for repetition. Place sole blame on The Media that gives license to gawk at "beautiful women." It's just so easy. Appreciation of exaggerated physical beauty is accepted as an excuse And high test scores are considered proof that even smart women Show off their bodies. But intelligence doesn't seek societal approval, It challenges it. (After all, brokenness isn't visible on airbrushed faces) Weakness needs strength. The past reminds us The REAL beautiful women don't need Quotes around the words, Google searches Or recognition- They just need to be the future. It's just so Hard.

"In a battlefield... and I thought of you. How could I not tell you?" Okay, friends, here it is: my solo show. Today, six months after its closing, I look back on it with wonder, amusement, tenderness, and gratitude for every soul who made it possible and who came to see it. Little did I know the morning of May 23rd, 2014, that I was about to live one of the best days of my life. Ever-so-slightly greener to the idiosyncrasies of the so-called "real world," the girl who wrote and performed The Windows Are Also Helping captured the feeling of being on the cusp of a new kind of adulthood and left it for this one to share and for you to enjoy half a year later. This is a show about self-discovery, about the experience of being a woman, and about getting to know your parents. This is a show about learning how to love, about cheesy red dresses and ridiculous questions and the beauty of the road that leads inwards. It’s about discovering the surprising proximity between who you want to be and who you already are... but, most importantly, this is a show for you. For you, for you, for you. If everything seems to be collapsing around you and you feel yourself falling into a black hole, I hope that so much as a second from this hour-long experience feels like coming back for air. I hope you laugh. I hope you enjoy. I hope you feel things. And I hope someday you come to understand how much I love you for listening. Credit to the incredible Andreas Nicholas for capturing it on camera.
Just a few of my many addition- uh, audition fails.

Fortress of Solitude (written by Michael J. Sielaff, 2006) I open the door, Firmly close it And prepare to sit down- Satisfied I had found A quiet place I could relax, Enjoy life. Let things go, Feel them flow- So, I browsed a book, Had a conversation with myself; And though I was done, I thought it would be fun, To stay awhile to Make sure everything was out, Resting in solitary serenity. But my kryptonite was at last revealed When nature's timer finally beeped- Meaning my feet had fallen asleep.
Extra By Way Of Specking: Day 1 (Welcome To The Dream) (written by Michael J. Sielaff) Specking- slang for those who are not hired for a job but show up to the job site anyway in hope that if someone does not show, they can work in the absent person's place. 6:30am. Get up. Wait. Shower. 7am. Leave. Follow roommate in thick morning traffic. 8:00am. Arrive. Park. Get in van. Get dropped off. Ask if extra extras are needed. Scolded for riding in van- they are now liable for someone who is not signed up to work on the set. Wait. Ask again. Politely. Told to sit down. Eat breakfast. Wait. Approached. Asked if I ate. Say no. He seems satisfied. I'm in- someone didn't show. Sign voucher. Go to wardrobe. Wait (in scorching sun). Shoot breeze with other extras. Wait. My turn. Told to put on new shirt. Done. Wait. Not approved by one. Few minutes later, approved by another. Hair needs trim. Wait. Get trim from friendly stylist. Good to go back to home base. Wait. Start writing this poem. Hear "At least I have a job." Get approved by assistant director. Get instruction. Cross street. Told where to stand. Get moved. Wait. Director explains what to do: dance, have fun. Rehearse. Picture up. Rolling. Action. Dance. Smile. Cut. Watch. Wait. Picture up. Rolling. Action. Dance. Smile. Cut. Repeat (x10). Shuffled under stage. About to sit down, shuffled back on stage. Wait. Picture up. Rolling. Action. Dance. Smile. Cut. Repeat (x5). Shuffled under stage. Talk to fellow extra. Everyone gets picture taken. Wait. Shuffled on stage. Wait. Picture up. Rolling. Action. Cut. Get moved upstairs. Not enough time to film. 5pm. Break for lunch. Walk to home base. Eat large, fancy meal in dark. Small talk with neighbor. Crew puts lights in room. Called outside on street. Lunch over. Get put in group of four. Talk. Rolling? Moved to new street. Talk. Selected for scene. Rejected for height. Stand by. Told to line up against wall. Told to move down a few places. Wait. Still too tall. Back to street with unused extras. Talk to cop. Wait. Shuffled inside, under stage. Told to go back outside. Wait. Lead back under stage. Wait. That's a wrap. Get changed. Instructed they need us tomorrow- call time 11am. Fill out voucher. Turn in voucher. Get in van. Get dropped off. Get in car. 1:30am. Head home. Check in mail. Wait for minimum wage. Repeat process in 8 hours.
Something To Celebrate (written by Michael J. Sielaff, 2006) Why not? There are obligation toasts all the time at parties. Haphazardly stringing kind words together Hoping to shatter a looming aroma of guilt: Justification is needed for acquaintances to gather. And when the time finally arrives, Each click gradually adverts distracted attention to The nervously bold individual who realizes Some guests have better places to be. "Could I have your attention please..." Safe and unspecific improvised sentences Remind of why the forced gathering. Eyes stare through the toastmaster, Secretly hoping these words would Provide purpose for their presence. Feeling the pressure, The individual quickly runs out of things to say. After an uncomfortable second of silence, Relieved guests do the easy part and raise their glasses in unison- Drinking to generalities they fortunately didn't have to make up. Then, the party's pulse beats on- Slowed now that the worst is over. Quickly forgetting what was proclaimed, Guests now have the freedom to call it a night Or engage in relaxed conversation. Meanwhile, the obligatory toast contently resonates in the head of "...the nicest person I know."

Big News Network 2015-04-13Michael ( /ˈmaɪkəl/) is a given name that comes from the Hebrew: מִיכָאֵל / מיכאל (Mikha'el), derived from the Hebrew question מי כמו אלוהים? (Hebrew pronunciation: [mi kəmo ʔelohim]) meaning "Who is like God?" In English, it is sometimes shortened to Mike, Mikey, or, especially in Ireland, Mick. In Russian language, it is Mikhail and Mykhailo in Ukrainian.
Female forms of Michael include Michèle, Michelle, Michaela, Mechelle, Micheline, and Michaelle, although Michael is occasionally seen as a female name, with women named Michael including actresses Michael Learned and Michael Michele. Another form is Mychal, which can either be a male or female name. Surnames that come from Michael include Carmichael, Dimichele, MacMichael, McMichael, Micallef, Michaelson, Mikhaylov, Mykhaylenko, Michaels and Mitchell.
The name first appears in the Bible, Numbers 13:13, where Sethur the son of Michael is one of twelve spies sent into the Land of Canaan. The Archangel Michael, referred to later in the Bible (Daniel 12:1), is considered a saint by the Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church. 29 September is the feast day of the three archangels, Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.
