On November 6, Rethink Institute hosted a panel discussion to release a major new report, Diminishing Press Freedom in Turkey. The report discusses that in the last couple of years, hundreds of journalists critical of the government were dismissed, significant number of media outlets was handed over to loyalists, some media owners were bought off with government tenders. Enormous tax evasion fines were levied against those that dared to remain critical. The outcome is a dismal state of press freedom, contributing to overall decline of the Turkish democracy. Press Freedom Panel The panel discussion featured, Yavuz Baydar (@yavuzbaydar), Turkish journalist, blogger and co-founder of P24, the Platform for Independent Media. Based in Istanbul, he currently writes opinion columns for Today’s Zaman and daily Bugün with specific focus on domestic and foreign policy issues. Active in the profession for over 35 years, Baydar was involved for last two decades in the field of press ethics, until he was fired as news ombudsman from daily Sabah for staunchly defending professional values during Gezi Park protests. He served as president of the Organization of News Ombudsmen (ONO) 2003–2004, and in 2014 received The Special Award of the European Press Prize for his fight against censorship. He is currently a Fellow at Harvard’s Shorenstein Center for Media, Politics and Public Policy. Ilhan Tanir (@WashingtonPoint), Washington based freelance journalist for number of Turkish publications, including BBC Turkish, Diken.Com.Tr and Posta212. More than 430 people have died in two Indian states from a days-long heatwave that has seen temperatures nudging 122 degrees Fahrenheit or 50 degrees celcius.
Officials warned the toll was almost certain to rise, with figures still being collected in some parts of the hard-hit Telangana state in the south of the country.
Large parts of India, including national capital New Delhi, have endured days of sweltering heat, prompting fears of power cuts. But the highest temperatures have been recorded in Telangana and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh state.

On November 6, Rethink Institute hosted a panel discussion to release a major new report, Diminishing Press Freedom in Turkey. The report discusses that in the last couple of years, hundreds of journalists critical of the government were dismissed, significant number of media outlets was handed over to loyalists, some media owners were bought off with government tenders. Enormous tax evasion fines were levied against those that dared to remain critical. The outcome is a dismal state of press freedom, contributing to overall decline of the Turkish democracy.

Yavuz Baydar (@yavuzbaydar), Turkish journalist, blogger and co-founder of P24, the Platform for Independent Media. Based in Istanbul, he currently writes opinion columns for Today’s Zaman and daily Bugün with specific focus on domestic and foreign policy issues. Active in the profession for over 35 years, Baydar was involved for last two decades in the field of press ethics, until he was fired as news ombudsman from daily Sabah for staunchly defending professional values during Gezi Park protests. He served as president of the Organization of News Ombudsmen (ONO) 2003–2004, and in 2014 received The Special Award of the European Press Prize for his fight against censorship. He is currently a Fellow at Harvard’s Shorenstein Center for Media, Politics and Public Policy.

Ilhan Tanir (@WashingtonPoint), Washington based freelance journalist for number of Turkish publications, including BBC Turkish, Diken.Com.Tr and Posta212. Tanir was formerly a columnist for Hurriyet Daily News until 2013 and correspondent for Turkish Daily Vatan until April of 2014.Tanir writes extensively on the Turkish domestic politics, Turkey-US relations, as well as issues related to the wider Middle East and Eurasian region. He also traveled several times to and reported from Syria since the uprising began. At least 13 people were killed today when a tornado struck the town of Ciudad Acuna, Mexico, near the Texas border, causing widespread damage that includes destroyed homes and cars flipped sideways at 90-degree angles.

The town is just two miles from Texas\' Laughlin Air Force base, the largest pilot training base in the United States.

No injuries or damage were reported at the Air Force base, according to an official.

About 300 homes were affected, according to a press statement from the Coahuila Government.

Karama-Gaza Human Rights Film Festival (Red Carpet) is a festival for short and long narrative and documentary films will be held in Gaza Strip on 12-14 May. It is the first festival that highlights human rights issues, mainly in Palestine and generally all over the world.

The opening of the first day of the three-day festival’s activities will be held next to the debris of the destroyed homes in Sheja’eya neighborhood (Al Tawiq ) in eastern Gaza. The festival is a part of a joint event held in with Karama Festival for Human Rights Films held in Amman in the same time.

Holding the festival in the Gaza Strip, which lives under siege and destruction for so many years, will show the other cultural and humanitarian face of Gaza, and creates a state of communication with the world through the window of cinema

Islamic State militants have reportedly seized the last border crossing between Iraq and Syria that was under Iraqi security forces control, Sunday. The al-Waleed border crossing (known as al-Tanaf on the Syrian side), which is just to the south of Palmyra, a UN World Heritage site that purportedly fell under the complete control of IS on Thursday.

A respected former anti-communist dissident warned on Monday, Poland is on “the velvet road to dictatorship” following the victory of nationalist leader Andrzej Duda in Sunday’s presidential elections.
Mr Duda, a Eurosceptic 43-year-old lawyer belonging to the socially conservative Law and Justice party, defeated Bronislaw Komorowski with 51.5 per cent of the vote, having campaigned on pledges of greater welfare spending and a reduction in the retirement age.
