"The Amtrak train that derailed in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, killing at least seven, was barreling into a sharp turn at 106 miles an hour — more than twice the speed limit on that stretch — when the engineer slammed on the emergency brakes, seconds before the train jumped the tracks, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. The maximum allowed speed was 50 m.p.h. on that curve, in the Port Richmond section of the city, but data downloaded from the “black box” recorder showed that just before it crashed, the train was speeding at 106 m.p.h., Robert Sumwalt, the National Transportation Safety Board member leading the investigation, said at a news conference late Wednesday. He said that the speed limit on the straightaway leading to the curve was 80 m.p.h; the Federal Railroad Administration said it was 70. “Just moments before the derailment,” Mr. Sumwalt said, “the engineer applied full emergency brake application.” When the data recorder stopped working three seconds later, he said, the speed was 102 m.p.h.” * Cenk Uygur (http://www.twitter.com/cenkuygur) and Ana Kasparian (http://www.twitter.com/AnaKasparian) discuss on The Young Turks. Japan military expansion: US and Japan revise Japan’s defense doctrine in face of rising China

The US and Japan agreed upon new guidelines for defense cooperation in New York on Monday that will fundamentally change how Japan’s military operates worldwide. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and his Japanese counterpart Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida agreed on revisions that will expand the role of Japanese forces by broadening the range of military situations that they can be deployed. While Japan's current military strategy is defensive in nature and limited to deploying forces only if Japan is directly attacked, the revisions will allow Japan to come to the aid of other countries if it is deemed in Japan’s interest. Under the new guidelines, Japan can help defend U.S. ships in its surrounding waters and Japan’s missile defense system could be used to intercept any weapons launched at the United States, even if Japan itself is not under attack. The new guidelines will streamline information and weapons sharing, and allow for Japan and the U.S. to engage in joint surveillance and reconnaissance operations. The U.S. will deploy U.S. Navy P-8 surveillance planes as well as Air Force Global Hawk drones to Japan this year. The U.S. also plans to replace the Japan-based carrier, USS George Washington, with the more advanced USS Ronald Reagan. China’s rising military capabilities and North Korea’s instability have long raised concerns in Japan. During the meeting, U.S. and Japanese officials agreed that the disputed Senkaku Islands claimed by both Tokyo and Beijing are ‘under the administration of Japan’ and fall within the scope of the U.S. Japan mutual defense treaty. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. A top UN official says Saudi Arabia’s harsh import restrictions on Yemen continue to hamper the flow of aid into the war-torn country. The UN humanitarian coordinator for Yemen, Johannes Van Der Klaauw, says aid is no longer reaching Yemen because of the Saudi embargo and its inspection regime. The UN is scrambling to bring emergency aid into Yemen during a negotiated pause in Saudi airstrikes. The bombing, which began in March, was halted on Tuesday for five days. The UN emergency teams are hoping to feed seven-hundred thousand Yemenis and provide another five-hundred thousand with medical support during the lull. Van Der Klaauw, however, says the relief efforts are possible only if Riyadh eases its restrictions. The UN coordinator has also warned that hospitals, water and sanitation facilities would shut down if Yemen doesn’t get an immediate fuel supply. A U.S. Marine Corps helicopter providing assistance after Nepal's second major earthquake in as many weeks has been declared missing, a US defense official confirmed Tuesday. Navy Captain Chris Sims said the Huey UH-1 was conducting disaster relief operations near Charikot, according to a Fox News report. The Huey disappeared at approximately 10 p.m. local time as part of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469. Six U.S. Marines and two Nepalese soldiers were aboard the helicopter. The aircraft was conducting a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operation in one area and was en route to a second location. Pentagon Spokesman Col. Steve Warren said there were "no indications of a crash," because the area is rugged. Other aircrafts nearby heard the helicopter's pilot say something about a fuel issue, Fox reports. NBC News confirmed U.S. Marines began delivering aid supplies on May 4th, just nine days following the first earthquake. USAID spokeswoman Natalie Hawwa told ABC News on Tuesday that their Disaster Assistance Response Team was sending two Hueys and one Osprey helicopter to Charikot. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Partial quote:
So the Trans-Pacific Partnership that we’re working on, it’s the biggest trade deal that we\'re working on right now -- has to do with the Asia Pacific region. And it reflects our values in ways that, frankly, some previous trade agreements did not. It’s the highest-standard, most progressive trade deal in history. It’s got strong, enforceable provisions for workers, preventing things like child labor. It’s got strong, enforceable provisions on the environment, helping us to do things that haven’t been done before, to prevent wildlife trafficking, or deforestation, or dealing with our oceans. And these are enforceable in the agreement.

While Japan\'s current military strategy is defensive in nature and limited to deploying forces only if Japan is directly attacked, the revisions will allow Japan to come to the aid of other countries if it is deemed in Japan’s interest.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. David Puttnam looks at Climate Change through different lenses, all of which reveal the unsustainable ways in which we are living. Climate Change is real, but throughout history humans have failed to set political and economic concerns aside for our greater good. Will we ignore this latest warning?

Lord David Puttnam produced award-winning films including Chariots of Fire, Bugsy Malone, and The Mission. He now works at the intersection between education, media, and policy. In 2007 he was appointed Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Draft Climate Change Bill.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
