The oldest bank still in existence is Monte dei Paschi di Siena, headquartered in Siena, Italy, which has been operating continuously since 1472.
Banking in the modern sense of the word can be traced to medieval and early RenaissanceItaly, to the rich cities in the north like Florence, Venice and Genoa. The Bardi and Peruzzi families dominated banking in 14th century Florence, establishing branches in many other parts of Europe. Perhaps the most famous Italian bank was the Medici bank, set up by Giovanni Medici in 1397. The earliest known state deposit bank, Banco di San Giorgio (Bank of St. George), was founded in 1407 at Genoa, Italy.
Banks are a riddle wrapped up in an enigma. We all kind of know that they do stuff with money we don’t understand, while the last crisis left a feeling of deep mistrust and confusion. We try to shed a bit of light onto the banking system. Why were banks invented, why did they cause the last crisis and are there alternatives?

Plot Permanent Residents combines extreme costume design with staged documentation of everyday activities in the urban space of Los Angeles. The costumes point to a collective imaginary world, that consists of the floating signifiers of pop-icons, myths and social fictions. The protagonists of the film communicate in a non-verbal language across spacial distances. Their simultaneous movements at different locations merge into a choreography, which draws our attention to musical and abstract visual aspects in the design of our environment. A portrait of the city's influence onto its residents.

The U.S. Congress established three key objectives for monetary policy in the Federal Reserve Act: Maximum employment, stable prices, and moderate long-term interest rates. The first two objectives are sometimes referred to as the Federal Reserve's dual mandate. Its duties have expanded over the years, and today, according to official Federal Reserve documentation, include conducting the nation's monetary policy, supervising and regulating banking institutions, maintaining the stability of the financial system and providing financial services to depository institutions, the U.S. government, and foreign official institutions. POSITIVE MONEY is a not-for-profit research and campaign group. They work to raise awareness of the connections between our current monetary and banking system and the serious social, economic and ecological problems that face the UK and the world today. In particular they focus on the role of banks in creating the nation's money supply through the accounting process they use when they make loans - an aspect of banking which is poorly understood. Positive Money believe these fundamental flaws are at the root of - or a major contributor to - problems of poverty, excessive debt, growing inequality and environmental degradation. The record of past "free banking" systems, in which paper currency consisted of competitively supplied banknotes, contradicts the widespread belief that central banks play an essential part in promoting financial stability. Instead, both that record and theoretical inquiries concerning how free banking arrangements regulate the money supply suggest that central banks, far from being bulwarks of financial stability, are inherently destabilizing. In particular, a free banking reform might have proven far more effective than the Federal Reserve Act in preventing U.S. financial crises.

Ideal candidates for these programs are looking to get back into fields where they've already worked, but have been out of the game for a few years, often raising kids or caring for aging parents.
Credit Suisse's Lisa Monaco, the Real Returns Program manager, says individuals in the program have a proven track record and are able to bring skill sets from their previous career back with them.
Jennifer Kelley is an intern with Real Returns. She says her participation has been a great way to come back and prove that she can still make a professional impact.
Goldman Sachs' Return-Ship program takes about 20 interns per class.
MetLife's Act Two internship lasts about 10 weeks.
MetLife Chief Technology Officer Jim O'Donnell says that Act Two had 13 interns and hundreds of applicants in its second year. O'Donnell calls the program a home run for his company.
Many of these internships, including JPMorgan Chase's Re-Entry Program, are try-outs for full-time jobs.
JPMorgan Chase Managing Director Julie Lepri says the company is hoping that these interns are the right match for the company and that the job JPMorgan Chase is offering is the job that person wants. The internship is a great opportunity to test that out.
Do you think a midlife internship could work for you? Have a solid resume and be ready to rock and roll.
Lepri says looking JPMorgan Chase is looking for assertive problem solvers who are willing to learn, take initiative, and ask questions.
Many adult internships are well-compensated. At the big banks, both college interns and midlife interns are often paid comparable salaries to those of entry-level full-time employees.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras's leftist government says it hopes to reach a cash-for-reforms deal in days, although European Union and IMF lenders are more pessimistic and say talks are moving too slowly for that.
Greek officials now point to a race against the clock to clinch a deal before payments totaling about 1.5 billion euros ($1.7 billion) to the IMF come due next month, starting with a 300 million euro payment on June 5.
"Now is the moment that negotiations are coming to a head. Now is the moment of truth, on June 5," Nikos Filis, spokesman for the ruling Syriza party's lawmakers, told ANT1 television.
"If there is no deal by then that will address the current funding problem, they won't get any money," he said.
Talks between Greece and its lenders have foundered on Athens' demand to roll back labour and pension reform as well as lower fiscal targets set under its bailout programme.
Among concessions Athens is mulling is a special tax on banking transactions to help raise revenue to meet fiscal targets, though discussion of the levy is at an early stage, two sources close to the talks said.
If the talks collapse, Tsipras's government has made clear it will pay pensioners and public workers before servicing debt.

DOJ gets unprecedented guilty plea by five banks for rigging currency markets
Five major banking institutions pleaded guilty to rigging currencies and manipulating the foreign exchange market in a case brought by the Department of Justice and other authorities. The banks were accused of manipulating the world's largest and least-regulated trading market, and have agreed to pay more than $5 billion in total. Judy Woodruff learns more from Keri Geiger of Bloomberg News.
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan said on Wednesday that the growth of Islamic banking would strengthen Turkey’s financial system, praising the rapid growth of Islamic banks, also known, as participation banks.
Speaking at the 14th General Assembly meeting of the Participation Banks Association of Turkey in Istanbul, Babacan, the minister responsible for the economy, said the latest global economic crisis showed that “interest-free financial methods are much more reliable, much more stable, and much more robust.”
Stating that "musareke" (profit-loss sharing) was a positive form of risk management, he said: “We believe that when this system becomes widespread in our country, our financial system will become much more robust.”
His remarks came after one of Turkey's largest state-controlled banks, Ziraat Bank, was authorized by the country's banking regulator to start operations in its Islamic banking division last week. The Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency issued a certificate giving permission to Ziraat Bank to commence operations as an Islamic bank.
On Oct. 15. of last year, the agency allowed Ziraat and its sister companies -- Ziraat Insurance, Ziraat Savings, Ziraat Investment and Ziraat Technology – to establish the new Islamic bank as main shareholders with a capital of $300 million.
There are over 300 Islamic financial institutions in 75 countries, according to Babacan.
The minister said that Turkey plans to establish, together with Indonesia, an institution named a “megabank”, which will function as a central bank for the participation banks.
“In a meeting with Indonesia and the Islamic Development Bank last month, we said that we, as Turkey, can put up at least $300 million for this, if it is established in accordance with principals of the participation banking. We’ve now increased our efforts to (establish this).”
He also stated that an insurance system should also be developed using interest-free practice. “We believe this sector will also be developed in the upcoming period. We are ready to give every kind of support to this.”
Ali Babacan also stressed the importance of structural reforms and political will, in order to overcome the economic crisis. “We see that countries which implement structural reforms are successful, and those who delay reforms, do not achieve any economic success.”

Financial Markets (2011) (ECON 252)
Professor Shiller characterizes investment banking by contrasting it to consulting, commercial banking, and securities trading. Then, in order to see the essence of investment banking, he reviews some of the principles that John Whitehead, the former chairman of Goldman Sachs, has formulated. These principles are the basis for a discussion of the substantial power that investment bankers have, and their role in society. Government regulation of these powerful investment banks has been a thorny issue for many years, and especially so now since they played a significant role in world financial crisis of the 2000s.

The Federal Reserve Bank Conspiracy Explained - Century of Enslavement // Top Documentary Films. The Federal Reserve System (also known as the Federal Reserve, and informally as the Fed) is the central banking system of the United States. It was created on December 23, 1913, with the enactment of the Federal Reserve Act, largely in response to a series of financial panics, particularly a severe panic in 1907. Over time, the roles and responsibilities of the Federal Reserve System have expanded, and its structure has evolved. Events such as the Great Depression in the 1930s were major factors leading to changes in the system. The Federal Reserve Bank Conspiracy Explained - Century of Enslavement // Top Documentary Films
The Fed also conducts research into the economy and releases numerous publications, such as the Beige Book. Free Banking and the Fed
Free Banking and the Fed
The record of past "free banking" systems, in which paper currency consisted of competitively supplied banknotes, contradicts the widespread belief that central banks play an essential part in promoting financial stability. Instead, both that record and theoretical inquiries concerning how free banking arrangements regulate the money supply suggest that central banks, far from being bulwarks of financial stability, are inherently destabilizing. In particular, a free banking reform might have proven far more effective than the Federal Reserve Act in preventing U.S. financial crises.
Recorded live on July 2, 2014, at Objectivist Summer Conference 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Paid Banking Internships for Grownups
Paid Banking Internships for Grownups
Think summer internships are only for college students? Think again. Some of the big investment banks are bringing in adult interns for retraining.
Morgan Stanley has a program called Return to Work at its offices in New York, London, Hong Kong, and Mumbai.
Morgan Stanley's Peg Sullivan, the global head of talent management, says the program has allowed her company to creatively reach an untapped pool of talent. Sullivan says the participants in Return to Work bring an incredible amount of enthusiasm and are like campus hires but with real work and life experience.
