বাংলাদেশের জাতীয় ফুল শাপলা আমার সোনার বাংলা আমি তোমায় ভালবাসি। ৩০ লক্ষ শহীদের বিনিময়ে আমরা পেয়েছি একটি দেশ, বাংলাদেশ। আর এই বাংলাদেশের জাতীয় ফুল শাপলা। এর ইংরেজি নাম “Water Lily” এবং বৈজ্ঞানিক নাম “Nymphaea nouchali” । শাপলা Nymphaeaceae পরিবারের এক প্রকার জলজ উদ্ভিদ। এ পরিবারভূক্ত সকল উদ্ভিদই শাপলা নামে পরিচিত। বিশ্বে শাপলার প্রায় ৩৫ টি প্রজাতি আছে। শাপলা বাংলাদেশের জাতীয় ফুল হলেও এটি ভারত, পাকিস্তান, শ্রীলংকা, ইয়েমেন, তাইওয়ান, ফিলিপাইন, কম্বোডিয়া, লাওস, থাইল্যান্ড, ভিয়েতনাম, ইন্দোনেশিয়া, মায়ানমার প্রভৃতি দেশের পুকুর ও হ্রদে দেখা যায়। শাপলা ফুল অনেক রঙের হলেও কেবল সাদা শাপলা ফুলই বাংলাদেশের জাতীয় ফুল। শাপলার মাঝখানের গর্ভকেশর গুলো হলুদ রঙের হয়। এই ফুলে ৪ থেকে ৫ টি বৃতি ও ১৩ থেকে ১৫ টি পাপড়ি থাকে। ফুলগুলো দেখতে তারার মত মনে হয়। সবুজাভ বৃতিগুলো ১১ থেকে ১৪ সেমি লম্বা হয়ে থাকে। স্বাদু পানিতে জন্মানো এই ফুলের হালকা গোলাপি রং এর বৃন্ত অনেক লম্বা। এই বৃন্ত সবজী হিসেবেও খাওয়া হয়। পূর্ণবিকশিত শাপলা ফুলের গর্ভাশয়ে গুড়ি গুড়ি বীজ থাকে। এই বীজ ভেজে একধরনের খৈ বানানো হয় যার নাম “ঢ্যাপের খৈ”। সারা বছর ধরেই শাপলা ফুল একটু-আধটু ফুটতে দেখা যায়। তবে বর্ষা ও শরৎ কালেই শাপলা ফুল বেশি ফোটে। বাংলাদেশের প্রায় সব জলাশয়েই সাদা শাপলা ফুল ফোটে। আর এ কারণেই এই সুন্দর সাদা শাপলা ফুল বাংলাদেশের জাতীয় ফুলের মর্যাদা পেয়েছে।- published: 04 Nov 2014

(শাপলা) Water Lily- The National Flower Of Bangladesh The national flower of Bangladesh is Shapla (Water Lily). Shapla is a flower floating at ease in almost every water bodies of Bangladesh. Beels haors, brooks, ponds etc. are abodes of this flower. There are two types of Shapla differing in color. One is white and the other is pink. Other than adding to the beauty of Bangladesh, Shapla is a delicious item of food for Bangladeshis. Rural people consume it as curry. Children are also fond of eating the stem and the fruit even green. Bangladeshis adore this flower which is expressed better by making a dummy of Shapla called Shapla Chattar at Motijheel in Dhaka. Few people would deny the beauty of the humble water lily. These stunning flowering plants have been used in worship and as symbols of life and love. They may be different sizes and slightly different shapes, but they all have one thing in common – undeniable beauty. Little wonder then, that the humble water lily has long been the national flower of Bangladesh. The national flower of Bangladesh is the White Water Lily. The plant falls under the botanical family Nymphaeaceae. This is appropriate when you consider what the word ‘Nymph’ was used to describe beautiful, female personifications of the various activities of nature in ancient Greek mythology. Surely few can argue that the beautiful water lily is not an appropriate symbol of the life that is so readily found in water. Appropriately, the white water lily is also seen as being the birth flower for the month of July. But how do these precious flowers grow? Notably, water lilies only grow where the water is somewhat shallow. If you look below the surface of the water, you will find that they are firmly rooted in the soil that is found on the bottom surface of the water – however much or little there is. Their stalks then travel up to the surface where they branch out into a variety of leaves and flowers which float easily and absorb sunlight more readily. The leaves of the water lily are round in shape, though they may have a radial notch or be completely circular depending on their particular variety. Some water lilies are particularly fragrant while others have barely any smell at all. Water lilies may be either hardy or tropical – with hardy lilies blooming only during the day and tropical ones blooming day or night. It is interesting to note that blue-flowered lilies are strictly tropical. The humble water lily is also surprisingly hardy. While the flowers themselves may be somewhat seasonal, their seeds can last for as long as 2000 years! They can also be encouraged to grow in virtually any corner of the globe – as long as the conditions are appropriate for the flower. So the next time you see a white water lily, think of Dhaka or the rest of Bangladesh. A more appropriate symbol of beauty through turmoil could not exist. National Flower of India - Lotus - The glory of being the National Flower of India goes to 'Lotus' or the water lily, an aquatic plant of Nymphaea family. The big attractive pink flowers have symmetrically arranged petals and broad floating that impart the sense of serenity and beauty. They are considered quite sacred by the Hindus, a major section of the Indian population and are thus have many legends, religious mythology and folklores surrounding them. It is said to represent long life, honor, good fortune and triumph. Lotus can live both in fresh shallow waters and in muddy swamps and can re-germinate for thousands of years symbolizing survival and purity of heart, mind and soul in all conditions. Lotus is often depicted as the seat of Gods and is often used by worshipping and religious practices. Its long stems contain air spaces while rhizomes perform the functions of the roots. The metaphorical symbolism of Lotus extends to divinity, fertility, wealth, knowledge and enlightenment. The adaptability of the plant to produce beautiful and gorgeous flowers despite the muddy swaps where it goes are meant to remind to remain pure and untouched by the evil and lead a life of non-attachment. The eyes of Lord Vishnu are often described in the Vedic verses as the petals of the Lotus flower and His pink feet are referred to as 'Charan Kamal' or the 'Lotus Feet'. It is often used as the motifs and patterns in the ancient Indian art and architecture.- published: 29 Aug 2014

A few years ago a community friend, Realtor Chuck Hoey suggested to me, that Dr Martin Luther King Jr needed an official national flower, and official flower arrangement. I have been working with the City and schools for years to have a student contest that would give us here at Antelope ValleyFlorist some ideas and suggestions. This years' "day of service" gives us a chance to go into a Third grade classroom and create the flower remembrance to honor the life and mission of Dr King. Ali Burns Porter at Quartz Hill Elementary in the Westside District is working with me to give her students a unique learning experience. This week we take a trip into the class and spend 30 minutes talking about History, emotion, honor, memories, symbolism, and flower appreciation. The 6th Seasonal Flower and Plant Exhibition and Autumn Flower Festival is underway in the Iranian capital, Tehran. Domestic exhibitors from across the country have showcased cut flowers, houseplants, outdoor plants and horticultural equipment and related industries. Flower lovers have flocked to the exhibition to revive their spirits after a long day work. Vast array of flowers in different colors has turned the expo into a flamboyant painting, catching the eye of every visitor. According to the organizer of the event, over 200 national flower and plant growers are taking part in the exhibition. Sunflowers, lilies, and lilacs were among the numerous flower species presented in the show. According to the head of municipality parks and green spaces, the exhibition is aimed to make people more familiar with different flowers, and to encourage them to take better care of Mother Nature. Diverse climatic conditions in Iran have turned the country into one the largest producers of flowers in the world. Iran ranks 17th in terms of the area under cultivation of ornamental flowers.
