Angola was the last scenario of the cold war. After thirty years of terrible civil war, its people is working hard to forget these decades. The effort of many experts to deactivate thousands of mines spread all over the country is an example of human strength. This is a positive picture that presents the current Angola, its extraordinary landscapes, rich cultures and artistic expressions.

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The Central African Republic's capital of Bangui has seen its Muslim population drop from 130,000 to under 1000 over the past few months. Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims. CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN and international community looking confused and impotent. In March 2013, the Séléka, a mostly Muslim rebel alliance, rose up and overthrew the corrupt government of François Bozizé, while bringing terror and chaos across the country - pillaging, killing and raping with impunity. In response, mostly Christian self-defense forces, called the anti-balaka, formed to defend CAR against Séléka attacks. Clashes grew more frequent throughout 2013 as the Séléka grew more ruthless. In December 2013, French and African troops went in to disarm the Séléka and staunch the bloodshed. The anti-balaka, seizing on a weakened Séléka, then went on the offensive. CAR had no real history of religious violence, and the current conflict is not based on any religious ideology. The fighting, however, turned increasingly sectarian in the fall of 2013, with revenge killings becoming the norm. And as the Séléka's power waned, the anti-balaka fed their need for revenge by brutalizing Muslim civilians. "Too few peacekeepers were deployed too late; the challenge of disarming the Séléka, containing the anti-balaka, and protecting the Muslim minority was underestimated," Human Rights Watch said in a recent statement. The bloodshed has not stopped. The UN is still debating whether or not to send peacekeepers. Even if a peacekeeping operation is approved, it will take six months for troops to be assembled. The Angolan Civil War was a major civil conflict in the Southern African state of Angola, beginning in 1975 and continuing, with some interludes, until 2002. The war began immediately after Angola became independent from Portugal in November 1975. Prior to this, a decolonization conflict had taken place in 1974--75, following the Angolan War of Independence. The Civil War was primarily a struggle for power between two former liberation movements, the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA). At the same time, it served as a surrogate battleground for the Cold War, due to heavy intervention by major opposing powers such as the Soviet Union and the United States. Each organisation had different roots in the Angolan social fabric and mutually incompatible leaderships, despite their sharing the aim of ending colonial occupation. Although both the MPLA and UNITA had socialist leanings, for the purpose of mobilizing international support they posed as "Marxist-Leninist" and "anti-communist", respectively. A third movement, the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA), having fought the MPLA alongside UNITA during the war for independence and the decolonization conflict, played almost no role in the Civil War. Additionally, the Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda (FLEC), an association of separatist militant groups, fought for the independence of the province of Cabinda from Angola. The 27-year war can be divided roughly into three periods of major fighting -- between 1975 and 1991, 1992 and 1994, and 1998 and 2002 -- broken up by fragile periods of peace. By the time the MPLA finally achieved victory in 2002, an estimated 500,000 people had been killed and over one million internally displaced. The war devastated Angola's infrastructure, and dealt severe damage to the nation's public administration, economic enterprises, and religious institutions. The Angolan Civil War reached such dimensions due to the combination of Angola's violent internal dynamics and massive foreign intervention. Both the Soviet Union and the United States considered the conflict critical to the global balance of power and to the outcome of the Cold War, and they and their allies put significant effort into making it a proxy war between their two power blocs. The Angolan Civil War ultimately became one of the bloodiest, longest, and most prominent armed conflicts of the Cold War. Moreover, the Angolan conflict became entangled with the Second Congo War in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as with the Namibian War of Independence. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angolan_civil_war

www.cunene-tours.com We are an Angolan Tour Operator. We would like to make a presentation of the Southern part of Angola, where is possible to combine two types of Tours, one with " The Tribes " you can find around Lubango, going to the South of Angola all along the border to Namibia, and one with " The Ocean Coast" where you can travel between Namibe and Foz de Cunene. Of course, we can put together tailor-made tours based on these suggestions; we can start or finish in Lubango, or Namibe, or Windhoek in Namibia or from the border with Namibia. We suggest that you consider a minimum of 12 or 15 days to get a good idea of this area. We also have a long experience in assistance for geological prospecting in all Angola. We can provide you the invitation letter for your Embassy to obtain the tourism visa. Angola is a friendly and safe country. Health: yellow fever is requested. Best season: april - may to october-november Highlights of Southern Angola Oasis of Arco : Discover the beauty and the tranquility of this deep-blue coloured lake, with its amazing rock formations and a wide variety of birds. Namib Desert : The oldest desert on earth, from Tombua to Walvis Bay in Namibia, you will discover a unique to the region plant, the Welwitchia Mirabilis, looking like a giant symbol of resistance. You will also admire the spectacular scenery of the dunes, so close to the coast, and that inspire respect. Beaches : Relax on white sand beaches, or go fishing or diving and explore the huge diversity of marine life while you catch oysters, clams, mussels and fresh fish directly from the sea for your dinner. Baia dos Tigres and Foz de Cunene : The road is very narrow between high dunes and the Ocean, only praticable during the spring tides. You will pass the Isthmus, now the Island of Baia dos Tigres, where whales, dolphins, seals, green turtles, jackals, gemsbok and brown hyenas can be found. You will reach Foz de Cunene for a swim in the fresh and clean waters of the River, and you will enjoy a fine meal at night under the stars. Iona National Park : This Park is situated about 200Kms south of the city of Namibe, in the area of Espinheira. You can find there animals like oryx, zébras, ostriches, jackals, springboks, and dik dik. Before the war it was the land of elephants, leopards, lions, and impalas.Maybe in the future they will reintroduce these specimens from neighbouring countries like Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. You will find the remains of an old German elephant hunter's lodge at the top of the hill. Tchitundo-Hulo : A nice walk to discover the prehistoric rock paintings on the top of the hill or inside the rocks. It becomes more and more difficult to find them because the big difference between night and day temperatures destroys the surface of the rocks. Some circles could be the representation of the sun, the moon; some figures could be men, giraffes, antelopes, birds, fish or wild animals. http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/angola_54038.html LUBANGO, Angola, 22 June 2010 -- In the newly opened red brick Lubango health clinic, a long line of Angolans wait their turn to see one of the two Cuban doctors working here. The doctors were assigned to provide health care to some 30,000 people in the southern province of Huila. During Angola's three decades of war, many children had no access to education. Now, about one-third of the adult population is illiterate. The country's health system was also severely affected. "More than 30 years of war destroyed 70 per cent of the public network," said Minister of Health José Vieira Dias Van-Dúnem. Training health workers has been part of a massive revitalization of Angola's health system. UNICEF has assisted in the revitalization process by delivering interventions to prevent diseases among mothers and children. The package of services, offered free to all women and children, includes ante-natal care, mosquito nets to avoid malaria, vaccinations for newborn babies and better management of childhood illness such as malnutrition, diarrhoea and acute respiratory infection. In a country where more than half of the population lives under the international poverty line and child and maternal mortality rates are among the world's highest, the UNICEF package of services has become a crucial remedy.

http://www.pacificprime.com/countries/angola/ Africa is a wonderful continent, and it is extremely beautiful, but it is important to have the right type of health insurance if you are living or working there. A good example will be a country like Angola. Angola has a fairly fixe medical facilities but there are some great medical facilities in South Africa and it is important you have access to these in the event of a serious medical issue. Before we talk about that, let's look at a health insurance plan and break it down into different aspects so you understand what you are buying and why. Today to get good value for health insurance it is important to just buy the modules you need. Most health insurance plan today come in a fairly modular form so if you select only the cover you want, then obviously you are gone to have a better deal. The core of any health insurance plan is gone to be the impatient component which covers you to go in hospital. Beyond that there is the outpatient component, if you visit the GP or specialist or special medication. Beyond that they are optional module around maternity or well being or dental or optical and importantly if you are living in Angola is the evacuation option. By taking this option what it would mean is that in the event of a serious medical issue, lets say a car accident, if the local medical facilities are not suitable for you or are not able to deal with the medical situation, then you will be evacuated. Most likely or obviously in this situation that would be to Johannesburg. It is also possible to upgrade the plan to have what we call a repatriation option this mean that rather to be evacuated to South Africa, if you are from for example the UK, then you could be repatriated back to UK for medical treatment. As you can see health plans are relatively complex today because they come with this modular form. Our job has a health insurance intermediary is to advise you on difference modules, how they work which one is the most suitable for you and then gone and found the right insurer at the right price so you can get the best coverage. If you are living and working in Angola and you want help with your health insurance, then why not come and talk to us.

In early 2005, the World Health Organization began investigating an outbreak of a then-undiagnosed haemorrhagic fever in Angola, which was centered in the northeastern Uige Province. The disease may have surfaced as early as March 2004 in a crowded children's ward. A doctor noted that a child, who subsequently died, was displaying signs of haemorrhagic fever. By October, the death rate on the ward went from three to five children a week to three to five a day. On March 22, 2005, as the death toll neared 100, the cause of the illness was identified as the Marburg virus. By July 2005, Angola's health department reported more than 300 cases were fatal. There were cases in 7 of 18 provinces but the outbreak was mostly confined to Uige province.
On 28th April 2013 the LHS Foundation launched a Flash Mob Contest to celebrate the World Day for Health and Safety at Work. The initiative has generated incredible results that testify to the contagious passion for safety and the consolidation of a change in culture across the organisations. What's really amazing about this initiative is the thousands of people who have come together - from all over the world - to create exceptional events - such as Flash Mobs - and thus promote important messages about health and safety. It is said that these are the first Flash Mobs in the world to be organised in the workplace with a health and safety theme. Remember that the purpose of the Flash Mob is to share an innovative and creative message with as many people as possible and to inspire love for health and safety at work! Share the Flash Mob finalist videos with your colleagues, friends and family. LHS FOUNDATION: info@fondlhs.org

*** Health: "Angola, 10 years later" Although the infant mortality rate continues to be one of the concerns of the Angolan government, the last ten years, show a drastic reduction in this rate by about 30%. The Angolan health is still dependent on the help of skilled professionals from abroad, to the extent that the war years did not allowed to train sufficient resources to the needs of Angolans. However, the country's natural wealth, very appealing to international companies that invest in the Angolan economy, is used to encourage these companies to contribute to social responsibility projects.

MaximsNewsNetwork: 02 August 2010 - UNICEF: Luanda, Angola - The Angolan government implements new programmes, including free anti-retroviral to HIV positive mothers and better paediatric care, in an effort to rebuild the country's health services; with the support of the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) the government is rebuilding its health services, including the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV, and better pediatric care. At Bernadino's and other Angolan hospitals, HIV positive mothers can reduce the risk of infection for their children during pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding, thanks to free anti-retroviral therapy. The hospital plays a lead role in Angola's health service, which is introducing support groups where mothers get advice about child health and HIV from doctors specializing in paediatric AIDS. It looks like a kindergarten, but this is Bernadino Paediatric Hospital in Luanda, where an old train carriage is home to a happy playgroup, led by educational therapists. The children play while they wait to see a doctor. Some, but not all of them are HIV positive. Some of mothers are positive too, and they value the support the hospital gives their children. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Frangueira Bernadino António, therapist: "We use their innocence and their play to create pedagogic activity." SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Emilia Lay, mother: "It helps me a lot, to be able to care for her." SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Elisete de Assuncão Fernandes João, doctor: "A healthy child that can play may have HIV, but the child isn't sick. It can live a normal life like other children." Luanda, Angola Tourism (HD) - Luanda, Angola Vacations Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube Luanda is the capital city of Angola , located in Central-Southern Africa . More than 4 million people live in Luanda. Luanda is a cosmopolitan city, many people fled to the capital during the brutal civil war that destroyed much of the country from 1974-2002. It's located on the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by natural beauty that is somewhat marred by the sprawling townships ( bairros ) and poor living conditions of its inhabitants. Luanda was founded in 1575 by Portuguese colonists and became a major slaving port. Since then, it has always been the cultural heart of Angola. It's a vibrant place with obvious Portuguese influences, excellent music and nightlife. It's one of the world's most expensive capitals to stay in, due to the fact that Angola is rich in diamonds and oil, so business men abound, but hotel rooms do not. Portuguese is the main language spoken in Luanda. Travel to Luanda =============== Angola's international airport (in Luanda) has regularly scheduled flights from major European and regional capitals. Luanda is built around its harbour and overlooks a thin long island -- Ihla . The heart of the city is known as the Marginal , it runs along the harbor promenade. Luanda has many interesting sights given its rich history and location on the coast. Museu de Antropologia -- for a good cultural introduction to Angola's many tribes Fortaleza de Sao Miguel -- oldest surviving building in Luanda, built in 1576 by the Portuguese. Palacio de Ferro - built by Gustave Eiffel no less in 1902.

www.cunene-tours.com We are an Angolan Tour Operator. You will cross a thorny Savannah, dry and sandy riverbeds, and will really be in the Angolan bush, where you will enjoy the vast and yellow plains with its fascinating sunrises and sunsets. Here is the gateway to the Muhimba, Mucawona and Mudhimba tribes. Pediva hot Springs : Another oasis in the desert, a nice place for camping near the hot springs and the fresh water of the Curoca river. This site could be dated at 2600 years old, but other sites could be around 20 000 years old. In this area the Mucuval tribe can be found. The Plateau and Province of Huila : We reach the fertile Central Plateau around Lubango town, by a very nice and spectacular road "The Serra da Leba Pass". Here we are in the land of the Mwila and Mugambwe tribes. The Tribes : Province of Huila : Mwila and Mugambwe Province of Namibe : Mucuval and Mucuroca Province of Kunene : Muhimba, Mudhimba and Mucawona We invite you to enjoy our photos and videos about them. The Camp : Experience five star camping in Southern Angola, one of the least explored areas in Africa. Product Description Korean War in Color documents war-torn Korea the way the soldiers saw it-in full, shocking color. This digitally mastered DVD presents a true picture of war-full of terror, chaos, blood and courage. Many of the images included here have never been seen by the general public before, having been kept top secret for decades by military officials for fear of a public backlash. Here are just a few of the color highlights: M.A.S.H. units in action-no Hawkeye, B.J., radar or Klinger here-these are the real men and women who saved thousands of lives. Also, the daring Inchon invasion, the battle of Seol, the Naktong River campaign, winter along the Chosin Reservoir, War in the Skies, and legendary director John Ford s rare footage of the 1st Marine Division in Action. In April 1950 Kim Il-sung travelled to Moscow and secured Stalin's support for a policy to unify Korea under his authority. Although agreeing with the invasion of South Korea in principle, Stalin refused to become directly involved in Kim's plans, and advised Kim to enlist Chinese support instead. In May 1950 Kim visited Beijing, and succeeded in gaining Mao's endorsement. At the time, Mao's support for Kim was largely political (he was contemplating the invasions of Taiwan and Tibet), and was unaware of Kim's precise intentions or the timing of Kim's attack. When the Korean war broke out, the Chinese were in the process of demobilizing half of the PLA's 5.6 million soldiers Stalin created "detailed [war] plans" that were communicated to the North Koreans. On 7 June 1950, Kim Il-sung called for an election in whole Korea on 5--8 August 1950 and a consultative conference in Haeju on 15--17 June 1950. On 11 June, the North sent three diplomats to the South, who were later arrested by the South. Fourteen days later on 25 June 1950, the North Korean People's Army (KPA) crossed the 38th parallel border and invaded South Korea.

War and political upheaval have been tearing whole countries apart—from Bosnia and Herzegovina to Cambodia to Rwanda.. And this vortex of violence is sucking in ever-larger numbers of children.. Entire generations have grown up in the midst of brutal armed conflicts.. At the end of 1995, conflicts have been running in Angola for over 30 years, in Afghanistan for 17 years, in Sri Lanka for 11 years and in Somalia for 7 years.. Children have, of course, always been caught up in warfare. They usually have little choice but to experience, at minimum, the same horrors as their parents—as casualties or even combatants.. And children have always been particularly exposed. When food supplies have run short, it is children who have been hardest hit, since their growing bodies need steady supplies of essential nutrients.. When water supplies have been contaminated, it is children who have had the least resistance to the dangers of disease.. And the trauma of exposure to violence and brutal death has emotionally affected generations of young people for the rest of their lives.. Recent developments in warfare have significantly heightened the dangers for children. During the last decade, it is estimated (and these figures, while specific, are necessarily orders of magnitude) that child victims have included: - 2 million killed; - 4-5 million disabled; - 12 million left homeless; - more than 1 million orphaned or separated from their parents; - and 10 million psychologically traumatized.. The increasing number of child victims is primarily explained by the higher proportion of civilian deaths in recent conflicts.. In the wars of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, only about half the victims were civilians.. In the later decades of this century the proportion of civilian victims has been rising steadily: in World War II it was two thirds, and by the end of the 1980s it was almost 90 per cent.. This is partly a function of technology. Aerial bombardment has extended the potential battle zone to entire national territories.. World War II saw a massive increase in indiscriminate killings, with the bombings of Coventry and Dresden, for example, and the atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.. And this pattern was repeated in the Viet Nam war, which is estimated to have cost 2.5 million lives.. A further cause of the rising death toll for civilians is that most contemporary conflicts are not between States, but within them.. Rather than being set-piece battles between contending armies, these are much more complex affairs—struggles between the military and civilians, or between contending groups of armed civilians.. They are as likely to be fought in villages and suburban streets as anywhere else.. In this case, the enemy camp is all around, and distinctions between combatant and non-combatant melt away in the suspicions and confusions of daily strife.. In 1994, the UN Department of Humanitarian Affairs reported that several countries had ongoing "complex emergencies" of this type, and it classified over 20 million people as "vulnerable"...

Ukraine’s eastern region of Donetsk has become a bone of contention between the US-backed new Kiev’s government and pro-Russian largely left wing rebels. The newly declared People’s Republic of Donetsk has been gripped with violence since the government in Kiev launched military operations in mid-April 2014. The flames of the conflict were fanned when the anti-Russian Kiev government insulted the thirty percent ethnic Russians in the country by marginalizing their language. While to the rebels the incumbent Ukrainian government is fascist, to the Kiev new rulers, rebels are terrorists. Now months after deadly clashes, people of every ethnicity in Ukraine need to be vigilant and strive to settle their issues without resorting to the Western or Eastern powers. About the Algerian War: The Algerian War, also known as the Algerian War of Independence or the Algerian Revolution (Arabic: الثورة الجزائرية), was a war between France and the Algerian independence movements from 1954 to 1962, which led to Algeria gaining its independence from France. An important decolonization war, it was a complex conflict characterized by guerrilla warfare, maquis fighting, terrorism, the use of torture by both sides, and counter-terrorism operations. The conflict was also a civil war between loyalist Algerians supporting a French Algeria and their insurrectionist Algerian Muslim counterparts. Effectively started by members of the National Liberation Front (FLN) on November 1, 1954, during the Toussaint Rouge ("Red All Saints' Day"), the conflict shook the foundations of the weak and unstable French Fourth Republic (1946–58) and led to its replacement by the Fifth Republic with a strengthened Presidency, with Charles de Gaulle acting in the latter role. Although the military campaigns led against Algerian nationalists were complete successes, with most prominent FLN leaders killed or arrested and terror attacks effectively stopped, the brutality of the methods employed failed to win hearts and minds in Algeria, alienated support in Metropolitan France and discredited French prestige abroad. In 1961, President Charles de Gaulle decided to give up Algeria, although it was regarded as an integral part of France, after conducting a referendum showing huge support for Algerian independence. The planned withdrawal led to a state crisis, to various assassination attempts on de Gaulle, and some attempts of military coups. Most of the former were carried out by the Organisation de l'armée secrète (OAS), an underground organization formed mainly from French military personnel supporting a French Algeria, which committed a large number of bombings and murders in both Algeria and the homeland to stop the planned independence. Upon independence, in 1962, 900,000 European-Algerians (Pieds-noirs) fled to France, in fear of the FLN's revenge, within a few months. The majority of Algerian Muslims who had worked for the French, were disarmed and left behind as the treaty between French and Algerian authorities declared that no actions could be taken against them. However, the Harkis in particular, having served as auxiliaries with the French army, were regarded as traitors by the FLN and between 50,000 and 150,000 Harkis and family members were murdered by the FLN or lynch-mobs, often after being abducted and tortured. Angola Travel Video - Angola is an eye-opener -- in more ways than one. Scarred painfully by years of debilitating warfare and untouched by foreign visitors since the early 1970s, the country remains remote and undiscovered, with few observers privy to the geographic highlights and vast cultural riches that lie hidden behind an ostensibly violent veneer. But, with the recent cessation of a 40-year civil conflict ushering in a prolonged period of peace and stability, opportunities for exploration are quietly opening up. For outsiders the attractions are manifold. Despite widespread poverty, inbred corruption and an infrastructure devastated by decades of indiscriminate fighting, Angola holds a lure that few other countries can match. Here in the heady heat of equatorial Africa youll encounter some of the continents most gracious people and discover many of its most closely guarded secrets. Chill out on expansive beaches, sample the solitude in virgin wildlife parks or sift through the ruins of Portuguese colonialism. From Luanda to Lubango the nuances are startling. Despite advancements in infrastructure and a dramatically improved security situation, travel in Angola remains the preserve of adventurers, diehards or those on flexible budgets. But with the transport network gradually recovering and wildlife being shipped in to re-populate decimated national parks, the signs of recovery are more than just a mirage. Angola is halfway along the road to political and economic atonement and it would be a shame to miss out on its dramatic rebirth. Enjoy Your Angola Travel Video!

Travel video about nature park Okavango Delta in Africa. Even for the African continent that is blessed with numerous beautiful natural landscapes, the Okavango Delta is truly unique. Covering a total area of more than fifteen thousand square kilometres the Okawango River is the largest inland delta in the world. It flows from the Bihé Highlands in Angola and travels down to the less elevated regions of the Kalahari Desert until it finally divides into a variety of creeks. The delta’s relatively few visitors mean that the landscape is well protected and it also means that those who do come here can enjoy the scenery undisturbed. Rann’s Camp has a first class range of facilities but such service comes at a price and it costs several hundred dollars per person per night, but to calm the shock one can enjoy a relaxing bathe in the camp’s cool swimming pool. Wildlife abounds on the innumerable islands of the Okavango Delta that, with their lush vegetation, are a true paradise for many kinds of herbivore. Today the islands of the delta are not frequented by poachers because the terrain is far too difficult and inaccessible for them. Thus in these parts, the elephant, the largest mammal in Africa, is in no danger of being shot for its ivory tusks. Most of the Delta’s giraffes live on the seventy-five kilometre long and twenty-five kilometre wide, Chief’s Island. In addition to its lush vegetation and diverse natural habitats, the lagoons, swamps and forests of the Delta make it one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. The Okavango Delta is one of the last great wildernesses in Africa and is something altogether special. The scenery is so beautiful that it often resembles a wonderful painting, than mere reality, a place in which myth and the captivating magic of Africa have survived right up to the present day.

www.cunene-tours.com We are an Angolan Tour Operator. Our camps include : Fully equipped kitchens Heated showers Toilets Tents for one or two people, with beds, sheets, mattresses, sleeping bags and pillows Fridges for food and beverages in the cars We provide a truck in case of big groups, for all the equipment Full breakfast Cold lunches Hot dinners with wine Mineral water, soft drinks and beers are available at any times.

Angolan authorities have arrested two human rights activists who were planning an anti-government protest, in the latest sign of repression in Africa's second largest oil exporter, rights groups said on Wednesday. Jose Marcos Mavungo was arrested on March 14, the day he was coordinating a demonstration in the volatile oil-producing northern enclave of Cabinda. Human rights lawyer Arao Bula Tempo was also arrested on unknown charges prior to the planned demonstration, which then didn't go ahead.

Big News Network 2015-04-11Angola, officially the Republic of Angola (Portuguese: República de Angola, pronounced: [ʁɨˈpublikɐ dɨ ɐ̃ˈɡɔla];Kikongo, Kimbundu, Umbundu: Repubilika ya Ngola), is a country in southern Africa bordered by Namibia on the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the north, and Zambia on the east; its west coast is on the Atlantic Ocean with Luanda as its capital city. The exclave province of Cabinda has borders with the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Portuguese were present in some—mostly coastal—points of the territory of what is now Angola, from the 16th to the 19th century, interacting in diverse ways with the peoples that lived there. In the 19th century they slowly and hesitantly began to establish themselves in the interior. Angola as a Portuguese colony encompassing the present territory was not established before the end of the 19th century, and "effective occupation", as required by the Berlin Conference (1884) was achieved only by the 1920s. Independence was achieved in 1975, after a protracted liberation war. After independence, Angola was the scene of an intense civil war from 1975 to 2002. The country has vast mineral and petroleum reserves, and its economy has on average grown at a two-digit pace since the 1990s, especially since the end of the civil war. In spite of this, standards of living remain low for the majority of the population, and life expectancy and infant mortality rates in Angola are among the worst-ranked in the world. At the same time, a minority has reached comfortable life standards, and the dominant stratum has succeeded in accumulating considerable wealth, so that social inequality in Angola is one of the highest in the world.
Well you have been a fighting man
Youve seen your share of war
Living for your Uncle Sam
Sam dont need you anymore
Youll be gone, youll be leaving
Youll be back home again
On Christmas or July fourth
I really dont remember when
And Im glad to see your doing well,
We all know just who you are,
Put your saber on the shelf
and well take down the ole blue star.
Well I remember when youd send me letters
and make my day when I was young
Photographs with M-16s

Youll be gone, youll be leaving
Youll be back home again
On Christmas or July fourth
I really dont remember when
And Im glad to see your doing well,
We all know just who you are,

I was living in Angola,
Reading in the paper
'Bout the new depression
Got the States upset
Still, I just can't see
How only one TV
And two slightly used cars
Causes such regrets
In this country such as ours,
If we had these things,
We would either be European
Or descend from kings
Oh! Sometimes, you know,
I hunger for more than food,
For more than the shelter
From the cold monsoons
I'd like swimmin' pools
And refrigerated air
And an extra room to spare
(No more ten to a room),
And a thinking color set
With a close-up zoom
But in this country such as ours,
If we had these things,
We'd be a U.N. delegation
Or a visiting queen
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
And you remember well
The day when old Wall Street fell
And do you fear it again?
Still there is one major difference
In just how we see some things
What you call poor we call prosperity
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Ooh! Sometimes, you know,
I hunger for more than food,
For more than the shelter
From the cold monsoons
I'd like swimmin' pools
And refrigerated air
And an extra room to spare
(No more ten to a room),
And a thinking color set
With a close-up zoom
But in this country such as ours,
If we had these things,
We'd be a U.N. delegation
Or a visiting queen
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
