On the steep flank of the mountain, a man was bent low to the basalt scree, laboring upward. On his back teetered a small refrigerator, recently removed from a hotel minibar. Daryn Webb had a plan, and for someone intent on "riding" a fridge down the side of an active volcano, a great deal of optimism might be assumed too. What happened when Webb reached a suitably daring altitude, jumped aboard his fridge and set to his ambitious plummet isn't recorded, though he did survive to concoct more hair-brained schemes. Nobody I've met is sure about the fridge. Perhaps it wasn't sturdy enough for high-velocity volcano travel, or perhaps there was a disappointing, crawling end to the journey. Undeterred, Webb's next experiment on Cerro Negro involved a mattress, and, later, his front door. Perhaps because his home was getting a little breezy and running low on appliances, he eventually gathered some tools and wood and knocked up the world's very first volcano board, later to belt down the same volcano with more success. abc breaking news, bbc, bbc football, bbc iplayer, bbc news, bbc news america, bbc persian, bbc sport, bbc weather, bbc world news, breaking celebrity news, breaking election news, breaking late news, breaking local news, breaking music news, breaking news, breaking news alerts, breaking news canada, breaking news headlines, breaking news in atlanta, breaking news in nigeria, breaking news india, breaking news pensacola florida, breaking news plane crash, breaking news story, breaking sports news, business expensive news home media world, christian world news, cnn, cnn breaking news, cnn money, cnn news, cnn news breaking news, cnn news world, detroit breaking news, global news, headline, headline news, health care technology news, hot latest global news, internet technology news, las vegas breaking news, latest breaking news, latest celebrity news, latest information technology news, latest music news, latest news, latest news headlines, latest news update, latest sports news, live breaking news, local breaking news, local news today, msn breaking news, nbc breaking news, nbc world news, news of the world, news report us world, news today news, news updated daily, solar technology news, sports news today, technology news, the latest news, today news, us news and world, us news and world report, us news and world report magazine, us news and world report web site, us news world report, world news, world news daily, world news headlines
Originally published on December 25, 2013 Sign up for a free trial of News Direct's animated news graphics at http://newsdirect.nma.com.tw/Reuters.aspx Nicaragua is rapidly moving ahead with a plan to allow Chinese company HKND Group to build a huge canal connecting the country's Pacific and Atlantic coasts. The $40 billion Nicaraguan canal project is expected to begin construction by the end of 2014 and could be completed by 2020. Beginning at the Pacific coast port of Brito, ships will cross Lake Nicaragua, before snaking through the jungle towards the country's Caribbean lowlands and the town of Bluefields on the eastern Coast. The 286-kilometer-long canal will be more than three times the length of the Panama Canal. It needs to earn $1 billion annually to turn a profit, meaning it would have to immediately draw half of the Panama canal's current ship traffic. The Nicaraguan canal will measure 83 meters in width, 27.6 meters in depth and is designed for 400,000-ton-class vessels whereas the Panama Canal only allows vessels with a capacity below 150,000 tons. The Nicaraguan canal will accommodate large LNG carriers and oil tankers from the US and Venezuela heading toward China. The canal is expected to generate annual revenue of at least $5.5 billion, and could capture 4.5% of global cargo shipping traffic. The HKND Group will pay Nicaragua $10 million a year for 10 years and gradually transfer ownership to Nicaragua over a century. The project is said to be able to double Nicaragua's $10 billion GDP by 2018. The deal also allows the company to build tax-free side projects including ports on Nicaragua's Pacific and Atlantic coasts, an oil pipeline bisecting the country, two free-trade zones and a cargo railway and an international airport. However, environmental experts argue that the canal project could cause profound ecological damage to the country.

SUBSCRIBE: - https://www.youtube.com/user/BBCWorldNews111 Rosario Murillo: Nicaragua's 'first comrade' In Nicaragua, where Marxist dogma has given way to a free market economy, the red-and-black flags of the Sandinista revolution have been supplanted by the pink and baby blue colors favored by the country's first lady, "la companera" Rosario Murillo. Her husband, Daniel Ortega, is president, but as chief of communications, Murillo is the voice and the other face of the government. At border crossings and on roadside billboards throughout the country, "Daniel and Rosario" are pictured side-by-side. On the government website, she dominates the page of "Speeches by Daniel and Rosario." And while Ortega occasionally appears in public, Murillo holds forth on current events each weekday on national television, often with supporters at her side. She speaks on behalf of her husband's government in a stream of rhetoric that blends socialism, New Age spirituality and Catholicism, but brooks no criticism. This month marks the 35th anniversary of the Sandinistas' ouster of dictator Anastasio Somoza, and as always on such occasions, Murillo stood beside Ortega at the official commemoration, welcoming Latin American dignitaries with a bejeweled fist raised in triumph. "The faith in each and every one of us has made it possible for God to fill us with miracles," Murillo told the crowd. TAGS Police investigate deaths of family of 5 in Maine Neighbors struggled to make sense of the shooting deaths of a family of five in which the father was known to many throughout their apartment complex as a friendly maintenance worker. Three children ranging from 4 to 12 were among the victims discovered Sunday in their home along with a long-barreled gun believed to have been used in their deaths. A detective said murder-suicide was one of the scenarios being investigated. "I still don't want to believe it," said Heather Nason, who used to babysit the three children. "I love those children like they were my own." Investigators said it appeared no one outside the family was responsible for the shootings. They planned to release the identities on Monday. The grisly discovery was made after a family friend contacted an apartment complex worker to express concerns about the family's well-being, investigators said. The worker entered the apartment and discovered one body, then immediately called police. Police said the bodies were found in three bedrooms. Police described the firearm found in the apartment as a long gun. Shell casings also were recovered. Neighbors described the father as well known in the apartment complex along the Saco River because he was one of the maintenance workers. abc breaking news, bbc, bbc football, bbc iplayer, bbc news, bbc news america, bbc persian, bbc sport, bbc weather, bbc world news, breaking celebrity news, breaking election news, breaking late news, breaking local news, breaking music news, breaking news, breaking news alerts, breaking news canada, breaking news headlines, breaking news in atlanta, breaking news in nigeria, breaking news india, breaking news pensacola florida, breaking news plane crash, breaking news story, breaking sports news, business expensive news home media world, christian world news, cnn, cnn breaking news, cnn money, cnn news, cnn news breaking news, cnn news world, detroit breaking news, global news, headline, headline news, health care technology news, hot latest global news, internet technology news, las vegas breaking news, latest breaking news, latest celebrity news, latest information technology news, latest music news, latest news, latest news headlines, latest news update, latest sports news, live breaking news, local breaking news, local news today, msn breaking news, nbc breaking news, nbc world news, news of the world, news report us world, news today news, news updated daily, solar technology news, sports news today, technology news, the latest news, today news, us news and world, us news and world report, us news and world report magazine, us news and world report web site, us news world report, world news, world news daily, world news headlines . What happens when eighteen students and three faculty and staff members travel to Nicaragua for three weeks to learn about the political, economical, and social situations of the country? University of Portland's Collaborative for International Studies & Global Outreach (CISGO) attempts to answer that question with Formation, Learning, and Service: University of Portland Students' Exploration of Nicaragua, a digital storytelling project by communication studies professor Courtney Vail Fletcher and videographer/photographer Jeff D. Kennel. Every spring, several University of Portland students, faculty, and staff members take part in the Nicaragua Immersion program through the Moreau Center for Service and Leadership. The program allows students to engage in service learning, focusing on the culture and current social justice issues facing the country. A participant in the 2011 Nicaragua Immersion, Fletcher decided to film the trip for a documentary. "We wanted to come back and share the stories and experiences we had with a wider range of audiences," Fletcher said. "We are only 21 people who got to have the experience, but we can share it with so many through the documentary." Videographer/photographer Jeff Kennel, who works in the Office of Marketing and Communications, also travelled with the group and documented it with film and photos. "We want to touch upon what the students did during the trip and how it will form and change them," Kennel said. "They learned about major overarching issues and we wanted to capture that in this documentary." Formation, Learning, and Service: University of Portland Students' Exploration of Nicaragua is sponsored by the Moreau Center and the Office of Marketing and Communications.

Engineers for International Development at George Mason University (EfID-GMU) exists for students to participate in community-driven development programs worldwide through the design and implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while fostering responsible leadership. We work both internationally and locally to build and educate communities about their basic infrastructure systems such as drinking water and sanitation. In January 2015, a small team took a trip to Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua in order to gather data on potential future projects. This data included GPS coordinates for future AutoCAD drafts, water quality tests (turbidity, bacteria, etc.), and inspections of the current water collection methods. Our goal for the Implementation Trip (Phase 1) in May 2015 is to design new water distribution systems in order to bring clean water to the communities in this video. https://sites.google.com/site/eidmason/ Music from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptmKHhxr6Y0

http://www.billgentile.com, WASHINGTON, DC, 21 July 2011 — This is the fifth in a series of video snapshots, or vignettes, which are unedited but mostly chronological clips that I was able to produce while conducting my "Backpack Documentary Expedition: Nicaragua," of 24 June through 3 July 2011. I call it "Los Nicas" because it's all about the people who populate the Central American nation of Nicaragua. These snapshots are quick peeks into an extraordinary journey by some 30 volunteers associated with the New York-based NGO, Bridges to Community, who visited Nicaragua to help build four houses in as many days, part of the group's broader endeavor of community development and strengthening ties between the United States and that Central American nation. The Bridges journey was documented by my two students, Martha Dodge and Paloma Jackson. The expedition was the first in what I hope will be many journeys to document the work of altruistic citizens of the world reaching out to assist the less fortunate. At the same time, I aim to teach the craft of backpack journalism to as many people as I can. We are, right now, at an extraordinary juncture in the history of mankind, technology and communication. Even more important than the Gutenberg press, the advances in digital cameras and the Internet provide us unprecedented opportunity. Ordinary citizens of the world now wield extraordinary power. We wield the power to communicate instantly, globally and in a language, the visual language, which supersedes both the written and the spoken word. This visual language knows no frontiers. It needs no translation. It is contingent on no corporate support. It is one of the most powerful tools of our time. And backpack journalism is the embodiment of this visual language. No matter what the new media landscape looks like after the current upheaval, backpack journalism will be an important part of it. And I am convinced that we can use this methodology as a force for good. As the slogan for our expedition states: "Engage. Embrace. Empower." This is the mission. So what is backpack journalism? I define it as the craft of one properly trained professional using a hand-held digital video camera to tell character-driven stories in a more immediate, more intimate fashion than is achievable using a conventional, shoulder-held camera and a team that includes camera person, sound person, correspondent and producer. Backpack journalists do it all and, most importantly, we make the pictures, which are the driving force of visual communication. Backpack journalism is not the 6 o'clock news reported by a single, multi-tasking journalist. It is a character-driven methodology with a specific, time-consuming approach and application that yields unique results and that does not work in all situations. I made these video snapshots with an HDSLR, the first time I've used this kind of tool. I hope you enjoy them. As many of you know, these cameras have some shortcomings, particularly when it comes to sound. I plan to post about a dozen of these brief films over the next several days, so stay tuned. I'd be interested to hear your comments. Please feel free to offer them. Yours, Bill Gentile

Bienvenidos a Nicaragua! The exotic land of lakes and volcanoes, beaches, cloud forests, and spectacular Spanish colonial cities. Passport: Nicaragua offers a personal touch to your travels. Being family owned and operated in the U.S. with family across Nicaragua, we travel as locals and present to you the best of Nicaragua. If you want a unique, never before experienced adventure of a lifetime, then come with us. Why Travel to Nicaragua? The climate in Nicaragua is warm and pleasant year round, though it is cooler in the mountains of the north. The country has developed a reputation as being ideal for tourists and new overseas settlers looking for sun, beach and relaxation. Nicaragua has much more to offer than that. Over the years many activities have been developed for seekers of adventure sports. There are facilities for those who are interested in hiking in the rain forest, horseback riding, ocean kayaking, canopy tours, waterfall rappelling, white water rafting, snorkeling, scuba diving or catch and release sport fishing. With the many incentives offered by Nicaragua to foreigners, many ex-patriots are buying Nicaragua real estate and setting up business as promoters of adventure travel and ecotourism Nicaragua is much cheaper than Costa Rica and people who find Costa Rica too crowded and expensive are looking to Nicaragua. The government in Nicaragua however is determined not to make the mistakes Costa Rica did and is careful about not degrading the environment and ecosystem by over development. So........let's Swim in crater lakes, Climb up or sandboard down an active volcano, Hike through misty rain forests, Dive a primeval reef, and Surf barrel waves -- all for fewer pesos than in other Central American destinations like its neighbors. Over the last 6 years, tourism to Nicaragua has grown an average of 16.6 percent per year, and no doubt current TV series Survivor: Nicaragua will bump it up even further in 2011. Nicaragua was also deemed the safest country in Central America (by the Economist Intelligence Unit in 2009) and was just chosen by U.S. News & World Report and AARP as one of the best affordable places to retire abroad. Get there now . . . before lesser-known Nicaragua becomes as touristy as its popular neighbors. Why PASSPORT: NICARAGUA? With just over 50% of our family scattered around Nicaragua, we have been traveling back and forth since the 1970's. We have seen this beautiful country maintain its culture while appreciating foreign influence. We also offer a personal touch; since we are American with Nicaraguan family, we travel as locals and present to you the best of Nicaragua. This is truly an unspoiled destination for those looking for relaxation, adventure or both. If you want a unique, never before experienced adventure of a lifetime, then come with us. Along with choosing a pre-set itinerary, we can also tailor your Nicaraguan adventure for you. Nicaraguan government officials state that in 2014 the export sector was close to 15%, and other areas were at 8%. Right now the country hopes to improve its economy, not only through the construction of the Interoceanic Canal, but also through the tourism and construction industries. These may allow for an economic growth of 5% this year, according to figures from the Central Bank of Nicaragua. teleSUR. http://multimedia.telesurtv.net/v/nicaragua-podria-tener-un-crecimiento-economico-del-5-en-2015-en/

Culture, color, cuisine, art, dance, music — Fontbonne University celebrates international students from 22 different countries during the school's annual International Bazaar. http://www.fontbonne.edu/admissions/international/ Video Transcript: Today is our 4th annual International Bazaar. We will have cultural exhibits. We'll have henna, and then we'll have a number of performers including a West African drum group, Japanese taiko group as well as a flamenco dancer from Columbia. So, what's great about this 4th annual International Bazaar is that we have people from the community bringing in great food from their local ethnic restaurants. We have our students who are showcasing their countries. We have vendors coming in to sell us things from Nicaragua, from Peru, from Africa. Diversity is part of our mission, and it's what we do. It's just who we are and so there are people here from various walks of life and we want to celebrate those people, no matter where they come from or who they are.

Sarah Topa is the Program Director of Doctors for Doctors & Nurses for Nurses, which provides full scholarships to aspiring medical and nursing students in rural Central America. We've already helped one student, Bryan, who's excelling in his second year of medical school, but we need your help to continue empowering youth to become agents of change in their own communities. In Central America, it costs $20,000 to send a student to medical school, and $13,000 to send one to nursing school. Due to an absence of student loan programs, high poverty rates and an overall lack of resources, there is a drastic shortage of health care professionals in these countries. In rural areas, the nearest clinic is often hours away. Due to poor road conditions, many are forced to travel by foot, and rarely see a doctor unless it is an emergency. People have a right to better care and many young people feel compelled to help, but lack the resources for formal training. We are more than just a scholarship program. We are life-long, local, life-saving. The first student in our program is already a success. We have established a fantastic team of professionals who are dedicated to helping us achieve our goals. Our strong connections with local organizations enable us to facilitate our programs on the ground in the communities we serve. What we need now is funding to take our operations to the next level. What we need now is your help. For every dollar you donate, we are one step closer to: - A doctor treating parasitic infections in a vulnerable community. - A nurse ensuring the safe delivery of a premature baby. - A high potential young person living their dream of becoming a doctor or nurse. Donate Now: http://igg.me/at/dfdnfn

As a completely student run effort, UC Davis' One Health presence in Nicaragua is in itself a respresentation of the inspiration the founding veterinary students had. The project is a way to break free from the traditional curriculum and carrer path and forge ahead in an exciting and emerging field. It represents an exciting way for programs to showcase student-led acheivement, the interdisciplinary collaboration between students, and that education doesn't have to stop at the classroom.

Travel video about destination Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a fascinating country in Central America bordered by Nicaragua and Panama, a natural paradise between the Caribbean and the Pacific.Located at more than a thousand metres above sea level, San José, Costa Rica’s capital city, not only boasts an idyllic location in the heart of Central America’s coffee country, but also an enviable climate. The extent to which Costa Rica joins with European tradition can be seen in the Teatro Nacional. The coffee barons, to whom the glorious development of San José is owed, created taxes for the export of coffee beans and thus funded the construction of the magnificent building. In a fertile mountain valley at the foot of a volcano, is Turrialba, a town that radiates a serene calm but once was an important station on the route of the Jungle Train from San José to the Atlantic coast. The crater of the Poas Volcano is surrounded by the dense green of a rainforest and overlooks the north western Meseta Central. Although it is one of the country’s most active volcanoes, it is the most visited, as visitors can go by car almost to the edge of the crater. The Rain Forest Aerial Tram is Costa Rica’s most popular tourist attraction, a ride on an open gondola through the jungle. A journey of discovery amid a canopy of trees, hovering at treetop level through the solitude of nature. Fascinating nature, joie de vivre and colonial history are omnipresent on this land bridge between North and South America, Costa Rica is surely one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

Los vecinos como Nicaragua, Costa Rica (que no tiene su propio ejército), y Honduras respondieron muy negativamente sobre los planes de Ortega. noodls 2015-04-11Nicaragua (i/ˌnɪkəˈrɑːɡwə/ nik-ə-RAH-gwə), officially the Republic of Nicaragua (Spanish: República de Nicaragua [reˈpuβlika ðe nikaˈɾaɣwa] ( listen)), is the largest country in the Central American isthmus, bordered by Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south. The country is situated between 11 and 14 degrees north of the Equator in the Northern Hemisphere, which places it entirely within the tropics. The Pacific Ocean lies to the west, and the Caribbean Sea to the east. The country's physical geography divides it into three major zones: Pacific lowlands; wet, cooler central highlands; and the Caribbean lowlands. On the Pacific side of the country are the two largest fresh water lakes in Central America—Lake Managua and Lake Nicaragua. Surrounding these lakes and extending to their northwest along the rift valley of the Gulf of Fonseca are fertile lowland plains, with soil highly enriched by ash from nearby volcanoes of the central highlands. Nicaragua's abundance of biologically significant and unique ecosystems contribute to Mesoamerica's designation as a biodiversity hotspot.
I don't give a fuck about nicaragua
I don't give a shit about the President
I don't care about suburban white kids
Trying to show they've got compassion
Politics are boring
Politics are fucking boring
Philosophizing propoganda spewing
Teenage armchair revolutionaries
What's the problem? What's the matter?
You're sitting there getting fatter
You say that you hate capitalism
And won't you compromise
But when you're out of cigarettes
THE FUNNY THING IS YOUR BUTT'S FULL OF JIZZ
You pompous ass your moral outrage
Gives me a fucking headache
Closed your mind got all the answers
Don't even realize you're an asshole
If you had any brains I guess you'd see
You're a narrow minded judgemental left wing nazi
You better watch who you call "backwards,"
Who you call "uncivilized."
Treat people like pigeons, I hope they peck out your eyes.
Throwing crumbs and passing judgement,
nobody asked you to import that shit
I see paradise and you see pavement,
Your renovations make a mess of it.
Erect monuments to excess, until there's no room left.
We'll turn this place into a tomb.
Breakfast woodsmoke on the breeze --
On the cliff the U.S. Embassy
Frowns out over Managua like Dracula's tower
The kid who guards Fonseca's tomb
Cradles a beat-up submachine gun --
At age fifteen he's a veteran of four years of war
Proud to pay his dues
He knows who turns the screws
Baby face and old man's eyes
Blue lagoon and flowering trees --
Bullet-packed Masaya streets
Full of the ghosts of the heroes of Monimbo
Women of the town laundry
Work and gossip and laugh at me --
They don't believe I'll ever send them the pictures I took
For every scar on a wall
There's a hole in someone's heart
Where a loved one's memory lives
In the flash of this moment
You're the best of what we are --
Don't let them stop you now
Nicaragua
Sandino in his tom mix hat
Gazes from billboards and coins
"Sandino vive in la lucha por la paz"
Sandino of the shining dream
Who stood up to the U.S. Marines --
Now Washington panics at U2 shots of "Cuban-style" latrines
In the flash of this moment
You're the best of what we are --
Don't let them stop you now
