The Haitian Revolution has often been described as the largest and most successful slave rebellion in the Western Hemisphere.In 1791, taking advantage of divisions among colonial rulers created by the roiling French Revolution, slaves on the French Caribbean island colony of Saint-Domingue (today's Haiti) rose up en masse, launching the only successful slave rebellion in recorded human history.By 1803 they had succeeded in ending not just slavery but French control over the colony. Timeline of Haitian History : Pre-1492: Prior to European arrival, Arawak-speaking Taíno people inhabited an island they referred to by several names, including Ayiti, or "high land." Numbering roughly 1 million, they were organized into at least five major settlements. 1492 : Christopher Columbus landed near today's city of Cap-Haïtien and claimed the island for Spain, naming it Hispaniola. 1503 : The first Africans were brought to Hispaniola for labor. 1625 : The French settled Tortuga Island and northwestern Hispaniola, naming their colony Saint-Domingue. 1697 : Spain signed the Treaty of Ryswick, under whose terms she ceded the western third of Hispaniola to France. 1749 : The city of Port-au-Prince was founded by Charles Burnier, Marquis of Larnage and named the capital of Saint-Domingue. 1791: Aug. 22, slave revolt begins. Tradition says it starts with a voodoo ceremony led by Dutty Boukman. He is captured and executed, but revolt spreads and plantations are torched. 1794: Feb. 4, French Assembly abolishes slavery in all its colonies, ratifying what is already reality in Saint-Domingue. 1801: Toussaint L'Ouverture defeats British and Spanish troops that invaded Santo Domingo and controls the entire island. 1 January 1804 - Haiti becomes independent,making Haiti an independent Black republic and the second nation-state in the Americas.Former slave Jean-Jacques Dessalines declares himself emperor.

Assemblés au palais national, les prisonniers furent entassés dans un camion et emmenés sous forte escorte à Fort Dimanche. Là, le peloton d'éxécution, vite formé et commandé par Francois Duvalier, était composé d'autres officiers de l'armée d'Haiti qui eux étaient mis en joug par des Tonton Macoutes qui accompagnèrent Duvalier pour l'éxécution en masse. Toutes sortes de raisons ont été évoquées: conspiration, corruption, actes de libertinage avec les filles de Duvalier, etc. Une chose est certaine après ce coup porté à l'institution militaire, Duvalier a procédé a la consolidation de son pouvoir en affaiblissant l'armée et en affermissant le corps des Tonton Macoutes. Alors que nul ne l'attendait un communiqué lu sur Radio Nationale et relayé par les stations commerciales du pays a fait part a la nation de la nouvelle comme suite: "Ce 8 Juin 1967, sous le commandement du président à vie Francois Duvalier, à Fort Dimanche, les 19 officiers et sous-officiers dont les noms suivent ont ete passés par les armes: 1) Lt. Colonel Joseph Charles Lemoine 2) Major Josué Borges 3) Major Pierre Thomas 4) Capitaine Serge Hilaire 5) Capitaine Joseph Laroche 6) Capitaine Serge Madiou 7) Capitaine Donald Manigat 8) Capitaine Probus Monestime 9) Capitaine Michel Obas 10) Capitaine Harry Tassy 11) Lieutenant Vénard Casimir 12) Lieutenant Mérisier Geffrard 13) Lieutenant Franck Monestime 14) Lieutenant Grégoire Monestime 15) Lieutenant Marc Monestime 16) Lieutenant Alix Remy 17) Lieutenant Josma Valentin 18) Adjudant/Sous Lieutenant Joseph Alcena 19) Adjudant/Sous Lieutenant André Desrosiers Apres l'exécution de ces soldats, certains s'attendaient à un soulèvement de l'armée, mais rien ne fut. Ainsi, plus tard Duvalier durant une intervention radio-diffusée procéda à l'appel de ces messieurs déjà morts et répondit "absent" après chaque nom cité. Certains autres officiers qui eurent le temps de s'enfuir furent sommés de "revenir a leurs bienfaiteurs", puis traités d'apatrides, et leur condamnation à mort par contumace fut annoncée. Les plus connus de ce 2 ème groupe étaient: Colonel Herme Leconte, Chef Corps d'Aviation, Colonel Jean Tassy, Chef du Service des Recherches Criminelles. Ils prirent l'asile dans des ambassades étrangères pour échapper au peloton d'éx'ecution. La petite histoire veut que certains des 19 furent mis au courant du dessein macabre de Duvalier d'en finir avec eux, mais se croyant si zélés et si loyaux à Duvalier, ils refusèrent de croire que leur Papa Doc pouvait entretenir une telle action. L'Empire français, appelé à postériori le Premier Empire, est le régime impérial de la France du 18 mai 1804, date de la proclamation de Napoléon Bonaparte Empereur des Français par senatus consulte, jusqu'à sa première abdication le 14 avril 1814, puis de son retour à Paris le 20 mars 1815 jusqu'à la séparation de la Commission Napoléon II le 7 juillet 1815. Il fait suite au Consulat sous la Première République, est entrecoupé par la Première Restauration avant le rétablissement de son autorité lors des Cent-Jours, et est suivi par la Seconde Restauration. Le Premier Empire se distingue des autres régimes politiques de l'Histoire de France d'abord par son originalité (il inaugure un système politique alors inédit en France, l'Empire), ensuite par sa belligérance (les guerres napoléoniennes voient la France affronter successivement cinq coalitions de 1805 à 1815). Ces conflits permettent à Napoléon de conquérir la majeure partie de l'Europe continentale, hors Scandinavie et Balkans ottomans, contrôlant à son apogée en 1812 un territoire s'étendant de Lisbonne à Moscou. Portée à son extension continentale maximale (860 000 km² annexés), la France compte alors 134 départements, des villes comme Rome, Hambourg, Barcelone, Amsterdam ou Raguse devenant chefs-lieux de départements français. Incarnés par de nombreuses et spectaculaires victoires militaires (Austerlitz, Iéna, Auerstadt, Eylau, Friedland, Wagram, la Moskova), ces succès continentaux se payent au prix de lourdes pertes en hommes (800 000 hommes du côté français) et d'un recul sur le plan colonial, conduisant à la disparition du Premier Empire colonial français, à la vente de la Louisiane en 1803 s'ajoutant la conquête des colonies antillaises par le Royaume-Uni, ennemi de la Révolution et maître des mers. Les récurrents échecs français à conquérir les Îles Britanniques (expéditions d'Irlande, campagne de Trafalgar) laissent en effet les Anglais financer les successives coalitions qui viennent en 1814 à bout des armées impériales, après le tournant décisif de la campagne de Russie, échec stratégique dont la Grande Armée ne se relèvera pas. C'est le premier des deux empires français établis au profit de la dynastie des Bonaparte. L’Empire commence le 18 mai 1804, quand le sénatus-consulte proclame Napoléon Bonaparte « empereur des Français ». Le plébiscite du 6 novembre 1804 confirme cette désignation. Le Premier Empire s'achève le 6 avril 1814 (abdication de Napoléon à Fontainebleau, après sa déchéance prononcée à Paris le 2 avril par le Sénat, et départ le 20 avril pour l'île d'Elbe). Le sacre de Napoléon Ier est la cérémonie d’intronisation et de couronnement qui suivit la proclamation de Napoléon Bonaparte comme empereur des Français sous le titre de Napoléon Ier du 18 mai 1804. La cérémonie se déroula le dimanche 2 décembre 1804 à Notre-Dame de Paris en présence du pape Pie VII. Elle dura près de cinq heures et le peintre Jacques-Louis David en fit deux tableaux : le Sacre de Napoléon et la Distribution des aigles. Contexte : Le 18 mai 1804, le consul à vie Napoléon Bonaparte reçut la délégation du Sénat lui présentant le senatus consulte promulgué le 4 mai, qui le proclame empereur des Français sous le nom de Napoléon Ier. À la suite de la proclamation, il fut demandé au peuple sous la forme d’un plébiscite, d’accepter l’« hérédité de la dignité impériale » . Les résultats de ce plébiscite furent de 3 572 329 oui contre 2 569 non soit plus de 99,9 % d’approbation. La cérémonie : Lors des préparatifs de la cérémonie, Napoléon aurait dit à son frère Joseph : « Si notre père nous voyait ». La cérémonie, longue de près de cinq heures, et qui voit le sacre de Napoléon Ier et de Joséphine de Beauharnais, se termine ainsi : Après avoir été sacrés, l'Empereur et l'Impératrice montent sur l'estrade. Le pape les bénit en prononçant ces mots : "Sur ce trône de l'Empire que vous affermisse et que, dans son royaume éternel, vous fasse régner avec lui, Jésus-Christ, Roi des Rois, Seigneur des Seigneurs, qui vit et règne avec Dieu le père et le Saint-Esprit dans les siècles des siècles". Puis Pie VII donne l'accolade à l'Empereur et dit : "Vivat Imperator in aeternum", ce à quoi répond l'assistance par des "Vive l'Empereur" et "Vive l'Impératrice". C'est alors que Napoléon prononce son serment civil mentionné dans les témoignages. Enfin, le héraut d'armes proclame majestueusement : "Le très glorieux et très auguste Napoléon, empereur des Français, est sacré et intronisé !". Quand Napoléon sort de Notre-Dame, une salve de cent un coups de canons retentit et le mois de décembre n'est que fêtes et réjouissances dans la capitale.
