Summer, 2008: John McCain secures the nomination, but polls behind Barack Obama. Strategist Steve Schmidt suggests a game changer: picking a conservative female with media savvy, unknown Alaska governor Sarah Palin, as vice president. She's an immediate hit and a quick study - the gap closes. Then, Tina Fey's impersonation, a raft of criticism, and missing her family send Palin into a near-catatonic state: she doesn't prepare for her Katie Couric interview and bombs. Schmidt searches for an answer: don't expect her to learn the issues, but give her a script. Palin does well in the debate with Biden; she finds her voice, goes off script, and goes rogue. A mistake?

Obama: "I will not sign" a bill repealing Obamacare. Obama Responds to GOP Victory. (NBC) President Barack Obama, in his first appearance since big Republican gains in the midterm election, said Wednesday that Americans sent a clear message: “They want us to get the job done.” “All of us have to give more Americans a reason to feel like the ground is stable beneath them,” Obama told reporters from the East Room of the White House. He made a point of addressing not just voters but the two-thirds of the electorate that stayed home. “They expect the people they elect to work as hard as they do,” he said. “They expect us to focus on their ambitions and not ours.” Obama singled out job creation, rebuilding infrastructure and boosting American exports as potential points of agreement when the next Congress takes over in January. He said he looked forward to welcoming leaders of both parties and both congressional chambers to the White House on Friday. Even before the new Congress is seated, the president said, he plans to ask for more money to fight Ebola, seek a new authorization for military force against ISIS militants and try to get a budget passed. “It’s time for us to take care of business,” he said. “There are things this country has to do that can’t wait until two years from now or another four years from now.” He also again called on Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform, and raised the prospect of taking some action on immigration on his own by the end of the year — a step that is certain to anger some Republicans. He declined to provide details. He said he was open to changes in his signature health care law but said he would not support eliminating its mandate that people buy insurance coverage. The Republicans gained at least seven Senate seats on Tuesday. They will hold at least 52 in the next Senate and as many as 54, depending on the outcomes of undecided races in Alaska and Louisiana. In the House, Republicans will hold their largest majority in at least 65 years. “There’s no doubt that Republicans had a good night,” he said. He avoided a similar characterization to what he called big losses in the 2010 midterms — a “shellacking.” Just before Obama spoke, Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the incoming majority leader, held his own press conference and said that Americans are clearly frustrated with dysfunction in Washington. The Senate, McConnell said, “basically doesn’t do anything. We don’t even vote.” Obama suggested he’d enjoy sharing a Kentucky bourbon with McConnell. The president struck a similar tone about gridlock, saying he had a unique responsibility “to make this town work.” “The American people overwhelmingly believe that this town doesn’t work well and that it is not attentive to their needs,” he said. “And, as president, they rightly hold me accountable to do more to make it work properly. I’m the guy who is elected by everybody, not just a particular state or a particular district.”

John Boehner: Barman 'wanted to kill' senior Republican

A barman has been charged with threatening to kill the Speaker of the House of Representatives, John Boehner. Michael Hoyt, who worked at a country club frequented by Mr Boehner, said he wished to shoot or poison the senior Republican by spiking his drink. The man is said to have a history of mental illness and owned an automatic pistol, which police have confiscated. In court papers, police said Mr Hoyt "believes John Boehner is the devil" and is responsible for Ebola. The barman called emergency services on 29 October 2014 and the call prompted sufficient concerns for the police to go to his home address. Mr Hoyt told them he had a loaded Beretta .380 pistol which he had planned to use to shoot Mr Boehner before fleeing. He also said he had planned to poison Mr Boehner's drink but did not have time before he lost his job at Wetherington Country Club in West Chester, Ohio. Police confiscated the weapon and Mr Hoyt was taken to a local hospital for psychiatric evaluation. "Hoyt told the officer he was Jesus Christ and that he was going to kill Boehner because Boehner was mean to him at the country club and because Boehner is responsible for Ebola," court documents say. In December, a judge ordered that Mr Hoyt be remanded into a specialised prison in Massachusetts for psychological prison for no more than 45 days. In court documents, authorities say they believe he poses a "current and ongoing credible threat" and noted that he "may be released at any time at the hospital's discretion". Mr Boehner is in Washington where aides tell the BBC he is carrying on his business as usual. He attended a meeting with President Obama yesterday. "Speaker Boehner is aware of this situation, and sincerely thanks the FBI, the Capitol Police, and local authorities in Ohio for their efforts," the Republican leader's spokesman Michael Steel said. In late October, investigators from the US Capitol Police and FBI interviewed Mr Boehner at his residence in his home state of Ohio. Police say that he did not recall any negative interactions with the bartender.

Several U.S. Republican senators on Tuesday proposed legislation that would place a moratorium on the release of most of the prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, saying they pose too much danger to the United States and its allies. Senator Kelly Ayotte said, "It's clear that we need a time out so that we do not reconfront the terrorists that we had captured and are currently in Guantanamo." House Republicans on Wednesday pushed through a bill that would delay a key section of the Volcker Rule, ignoring staunch opposition from Democrats and a veto threat from President Barack Obama. The vote of 271-154 included just 29 Democratic supporters. Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.), a persistent opponent of Washington favors for big banks, was the lone Republican to stand against the bill. "If at first you don't succeed, try, try, again," said Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) on the House floor the evening before the vote. "Usually we use that saying with children, to encourage them to achieve greater things, but it seems that when it comes to Congress, it's what Wall Street keeps telling House Republicans."
