Obama said in the statement from the White House the U.S. military is authorized to launch targeted airstrikes if Islamist militants advance toward American personnel in northern Iraq. Declaring that "America is coming to help," he also said that the U.S. decided to conduct the drops to the 50,000 or so religious minorities stranded on a mountaintop in the country's north, who have been forced to flee their homes as the militants advanced. Obama said the religious minorities are under the threat of genocide from militants from the Islamic State (IS), the group formerly known as ISIS, and are stranded on the mountain without food or water. The American actor Richard Kiel has died in hospital after breaking his leg, although doctors are not connecting the accident with his death.

The 74-year-old had been in a motorised wheelchair for some time following a truck accident several years ago, which led to him easing off on his acting career.

The role that made him famous was as Bond villain Jaws, a role he only got after turning down Darth Vader in the first Star Wars because he felt wearing a mask would limit his acting.

Obama begins his address

“My fellow Americans, tonight, I want to speak to you about what the United States will do with our friends and allies to degrade and ultimately destroy the terrorist group known as Isil.

“As commander in chief, my highest priority is the security of the American people. Over the last several years, we have consistently taken the fight to terrorists who threaten our country. We took out Osama bin Laden and much of al-Qaida’s leadership in Afghanistan and Pakistan. We’ve targeted al-Qaida’s affiliate in Yemen, and recently eliminated the top commander of its affiliate in Somalia.

“We’ve done so while bringing more than 140,000 American troops home from Iraq, and drawing down our forces in Afghanistan, where our combat mission will end later this year. Thanks to our military and counter-terrorism professionals, America is safer.”

Remember the hole in the ozone layer? The one caused by refrigerants used in air conditioners and aerosol spray cans? Yeah, that never really went away. Each frigid Antarctic winter, the ozone hole has reappeared, allowing higher amounts of ultraviolet rays from the sun to reach the Earth\'s surface. Some years, such as in 2011, a significant hole even opens up over the Arctic, too. Total ozone concentrations during the peak of the largest ozone hole ever recorded, in 2006. But finally, after years of cutting emissions of ozone-depleting substances known as CFCs, and halons, scientists are detecting signs of recovery in the thin upper reaches of the stratosphere.

West Africa is being plagued by a new outbreak of Ebola — a terrifying disease that causes its victims to bleed to death from the inside out. Ebola has no cure, and the latest epidemic is spreading fast.

VICE News visited Liberia, where many feel the new outbreak began, borne from the bushmeat markets of Lofa. Western scientists feel that the consumption and preparation of meat from monkeys, fruit bats, and other forest animals is behind the transmission of Ebola, and possibly a new supervirus, which if left uncontrolled could kill a third of the world\'s population.

Obama said the religious minorities are under the threat of genocide from militants from the Islamic State (IS), the group formerly known as ISIS, and are stranded on the mountain without food or water. He said airstrikes could also be used to help protect those civilians 2014 August 3 ABC Breaking News ISIS Makes Up To $3 Million a Day Selling Oil 2014 August 3 Breaking News ISIS Terrorists Outline Horrifying 5 Year Plan For Global Domination - The Global Terrorism Threat incubator Syria/Iraq ISLAM Holy WAR against NonMuslims worldwide training grounds July 2014 Breaking News Airport security in the UK, USA and other countries has been ramped up amid fears al-Qaeda plans to use British and other Western jihadists fighting in Syria and Iraq as suicide bombers 2014 July 12 Breaking News USA Attorney General warns global threat Western extremists in Syria/Iraq July 2014 Breaking News Undetectable bomb threat USA urges increased security on international flights http://rt.com/usa/170080-heightened-s... 2014 July 12 Breaking News Iraq Crisis Iraq USA embassy equipped Apache Attack helicopters https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-9Gv... 2014 July 11 Breaking News Iraq Crisis Pentagon states USA embassy equipped with Apache attack helicopters troops in Baghdad to fly Apache helicopters http://news.yahoo.com/us-troops-baghd... 2014 July 1 Breaking News USA Military successfully destroyed a mock enemy warhead https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSTG9... 2014 June 30 Breaking News Declaration of a caliphate was a bold move by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levan http://news.yahoo.com/alarm-ridicule-... 2014 June 29 Muslims internal struggle of hatred and false identity following a dead false prophet Mohammad that leads to hell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CSP2... Remember the hole in the ozone layer? The one caused by refrigerants used in air conditioners and aerosol spray cans? Yeah, that never really went away. Each frigid Antarctic winter, the ozone hole has reappeared, allowing higher amounts of ultraviolet rays from the sun to reach the Earth's surface. Some years, such as in 2011, a significant hole even opens up over the Arctic, too. Total ozone concentrations during the peak of the largest ozone hole ever recorded, in 2006. But finally, after years of cutting emissions of ozone-depleting substances known as CFCs, and halons, scientists are detecting signs of recovery in the thin upper reaches of the stratosphere. http://feeds.mashable.com/~r/Mashable/~3/d3ELp7EkggE/ http://www.wochit.com

Ebola has no cure, and the latest epidemic is spreading fast. VICE News visited Liberia, where many feel the new outbreak began, borne from the bushmeat markets of Lofa. Western scientists feel that the consumption and preparation of meat from monkeys, fruit bats, and other forest animals is behind the transmission of Ebola, and possibly a new supervirus, which if left uncontrolled could kill a third of the world's population. They also mark an acknowledgment by Mr. Obama that the intensity of the threat from the militant group Islamic State requires the type of long-term, open-ended conflict he has resisted since taking office—and which he campaigned for the White House saying he would avoid. In asking Americans to support another military incursion in the Middle East, Mr. Obama said his strategy to combat Islamic State, also called ISIS and ISIL, would be bolstered by a coalition of Arab and European nations. His plan builds on his authorization in August of airstrikes in Iraq to protect American personnel threatened by Islamic State and to provide humanitarian assistance to besieged Iraqis. Mr. Obama said the U.S. goal now is to help Iraqis reclaim large swaths of territory the group has rapidly overtaken in recent months since spilling over from its stronghold in neighboring Syria. His speech paves the way for the first U.S. strikes at the group's bases and havens in Syria. "America will lead a broad coalition to roll back this terrorist threat," Mr. Obama said in remarks from the White House. "I will not hesitate to take action against ISIL in Syria, as well as Iraq. This is a core principle of my presidency: If you threaten America, you will find no safe haven."

The US Air Force has told a sergeant he will have to leave the military unless he agrees to take an oath with the phrase "so help me God," officials said on Tuesday. In the latest religious controversy to roil the air force, the atheist airman last month was denied his request to re-enlist because of his refusal to swear to God -- and he is now poised to take the military to court, his lawyer said. "We have not received word from the Air Force regarding our letter. It has not indicated a willingness to settle out of court," said Monica Miller, an attorney for the American Humanist Association, which has taken up the service member's case.
