Henry Robinson Luce (April 3, 1898 – February 28, 1967), a magazine publisher, was called "the most influential private citizen in the America of his day." He launched and closely supervised a stable of magazines that transformed journalism and the reading habits of upscale Americans. Time summarized and interpreted the week's news; Life was a picture magazine of politics, culture and society that dominated American visual perceptions in the era before television; Fortune explored in depth the economy and the world of business, introducing to executives avant-garde ideas such as Keynesianism; and Sports Illustrated which probed beneath the surface of the game to explore the motivations and strategies of the teams and key players. Add in his radio projects and newsreels, and Luce created the first multimedia corporation. Luce, born in China to missionary parents, demonstrated a missionary zeal to make the nation worthy of dominating the world in what he called the "American Century."

Luce, known to his friends as "Father Time," was born in Tengchow, China, on April 3, 1898, the son of Elizabeth Middleton and Henry Winters Luce, who was a Presbyterian missionary. He received his education in various Chinese and English boarding schools including the China Inland Mission Chefoo School. He was sent to the U.S. at the age of 15 to attend the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut, followed by Yale College.

John Kenneth "Ken" Galbraith (properly  /ɡælˈbreɪθ/ gal-BRAYTH, but commonly /ˈɡælbreɪθ/ GAL-brayth; October 15, 1908 – April 29, 2006), OC was a Canadian-American economist. He was a Keynesian and an institutionalist, a leading proponent of 20th-century American liberalism. His books on economic topics were bestsellers from the 1950s through the 2000s and he filled the role of public intellectual from the '50s to the 1970s on matters of economics.

Galbraith was a prolific author who produced four dozen books and over a thousand articles on various subjects. Among his most famous works was a popular trilogy on economics, American Capitalism (1952), The Affluent Society (1958), and The New Industrial State (1967). He taught at Harvard University for many years. Galbraith was active in Democratic Party politics, serving in the administrations of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson; he served as United States Ambassador to India under Kennedy. Due to his prodigious literary output he was arguably the best known economist in the world during his lifetime and was one of a select few people to be awarded the Medal of Freedom, in 1946, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000, for services to economics.

Clare Boothe Luce (March 10, 1903 – October 9, 1987) was one of the first American women ambassadors, a versatile author, and wife of Henry Luce, publisher of Time, Life and Fortune. Her writings extended across fashion journalism, war-reporting and drama, notably the play The Women with its all-female cast.

Politically she was a lifelong right-wing Republican, twice a Congresswoman for Connecticut, who campaigned for Eisenhower in 1952. This earned her the job of Ambassador to Italy, where she promoted her strong anti-communist beliefs.

The Clare Boothe Luce Program continues to provide support for women in science, mathematics and engineering.

Luce was born Ann Clare Boothe in New York City on March 10, 1903, the second child of dancer Anna Clara Schneider (aka Anna Snyder; aka Anne Boothe) and William Franklin Boothe. Her parents were not married and would separate in 1912. Her father, a violinist and patent-medicine salesman, instilled in his daughter a love of music and literature. Parts of her childhood were spent in Chicago, Illinois, Memphis, Tennessee, Union City, New Jersey and New York City. Clare Boothe had an elder brother, David Franklin Boothe.

Sylvia Jukes Morris is a British-born biographer, based in the United States. She is married to writer Edmund Morris.

She was born in England, and taught literature there before moving to the U.S. She earned her claim to fame as a biographer with the publication of her book about Clare Boothe Luce, Rage for Fame: The Ascent of Clare Boothe Luce, which was published by Random House in 1997. Jukes Morris had access to Luce, her diaries, and papers, and told a juicy tale. The book chronicles Luce’s calculated rise from an unstable and poor childhood through several fortunate relationships and marriages and a career as a journalist to fame as the wife of Henry R. Luce, co-founder of Time magazine. It ends with her election to Congress in 1943.^{[citation needed]}

The book was named a Notable Book by the New York Times in 1997. She published another biography, Edith Kermit Roosevelt: Portrait of a First Lady, first in 1980, and reissued in paperback in 1990 and in 2001, about the second wife of Theodore Roosevelt. She began that book while her husband was writing a play about Theodore Roosevelt, and she discovered that nothing had been written about Edith Roosevelt.^{[citation needed]}

William Franklin "Billy" Graham, Jr. (born November 7, 1918) is an American evangelical Christian evangelist, ordained as a Southern Baptist minister, who rose to celebrity status with national media backing of William Randolph Hearst and Henry Luce in 1949. His sermons were broadcast on radio and television, with some still re-broadcast today.

Graham is notable for having been a spiritual adviser to several United States Presidents; he was particularly close to Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard M. Nixon. During the civil rights movement, he began to support integrated seating for his revivals and crusades; in 1957 he invited Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. to jointly preach at a huge revival in New York City, where they appeared together at Madison Square Garden, and bailed the minister out of jail in the 1960s when he was arrested in demonstrations.

Having built an evangelical empire and organized huge events worldwide, Graham has personally preached the Gospel to more people than any other person in history. His institutions include a variety of media and publishing outlets. According to his staff, more than 3.2 million people have responded to the invitation at Billy Graham Crusades to accept Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. As of 2008, Graham's estimated lifetime audience, including radio and television broadcasts, topped 2.2 billion.
