Henry "Hank" Jones (July 31, 1918 – May 16, 2010) was an American jazz pianist, bandleader, arranger, and composer. Critics and musicians described Jones as eloquent, lyrical, and impeccable. In 1989, The National Endowment for the Arts honored him with the NEA Jazz Masters Award. He was also honored in 2003 with the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) Jazz Living Legend Award. In 2008, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts. On April 13, 2009, the University of Hartford presented Jones with a Doctorate Degree for his musical accomplishments.
Jones recorded over sixty albums under his own name, and countless others as a sideman.
Born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Henry "Hank" Jones moved to Pontiac, Michigan, where his father, Henry Jones Sr. a Baptist deacon and lumber inspector, bought a three-story brick home. One of seven children, Jones was raised in a musical family. His mother Olivia Jones sang; his two older sisters studied piano; and his two younger brothers—Thad, a trumpeter, and Elvin, a drummer—also became prominent jazz musicians. He studied piano at an early age and came under the influence of Earl Hines, Fats Waller, Teddy Wilson, and Art Tatum. By the age of 13 Jones was performing locally in Michigan and Ohio. While playing with territory bands in Grand Rapids and Lansing in 1944 he met Lucky Thompson, who invited Jones to work in New York City at the Onyx Club with Hot Lips Page.
Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, 1926 – September 28, 1991) was an American jazz musician, trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. Widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Miles Davis was, with his musical groups, at the forefront of several major developments in jazz music, including bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, and jazz fusion.
Miles Dewey Davis was born on May 26, 1926, to an affluent African American family in Alton, Illinois. His father, Dr. Miles Henry Davis, was a dentist. In 1927 the family moved to East St. Louis, Illinois. They also owned a substantial ranch in northern Arkansas, where Davis learned to ride horses as a boy.
Davis' mother, Cleota Mae (Henry) Davis, wanted her son to learn the piano; she was a capable blues pianist but kept this fact hidden from her son. His musical studies began at 13, when his father gave him a trumpet and arranged lessons with local musician Elwood Buchanan. Davis later suggested that his father's instrument choice was made largely to irk his wife, who disliked the trumpet's sound. Against the fashion of the time, Buchanan stressed the importance of playing without vibrato; he was reported to have slapped Davis' knuckles every time he started using heavy vibrato. Davis would carry his clear signature tone throughout his career. He once remarked on its importance to him, saying, "I prefer a round sound with no attitude in it, like a round voice with not too much tremolo and not too much bass. Just right in the middle. If I can’t get that sound I can’t play anything."Clark Terry was another important early influence.[citation needed]

When the Frontier Was Young
Comin' Round
I got home this morning, she was waiting there
"Don't you even bother coming round my bed" she said
Darling don't you worry, I'll be your best man
I won't ever leave you here alone again
Cause I feel like coming round
I woke up next morning
She was smiling bright
I asked for them car keys I felt like taking a little
ride
She got auful nasty
Went and get my gun
What she calls burning bridges I call having a little fun
Cause I feel like coming round
Well I guess I done it this time
Caroline
Caroline, I just can't believe the troubles in your eyes
Why, do you look at me like you don't know why
I tried, but those other men just shone a little too
bright
While I stood there watching night after night
If I just untied one hand, would you promise I'm your man
Oh please be mine Caroline
If I would put down my gun, would you promise not to run
Just stay and be Caroline
At First I sighed
but this treatment from you I just can't abide
Why, won't you say you love me Caroline
Are the ropes too tight?
Or does some other man still own you out of spite
I won't give up on you without a fight
Just tell me what can I do
I'll make all your dreams come true
Just come back please Caroline
This wasn't part of my plan
All I want is your sweet hand
Alive
I got the blood of two men
I can't wash off my hands
And the girl that I love
Is up in heaven above
I got the drop on you
I pull the trigger and all my troubles are through
And I never, felt alive as I do right now
I got no time to waste
But still I hesitate
I've got no beef with this man
He's got no gun in his hand
But he'll keep coming for me
As long as he's still breathing I'll never be free
And I never, felt alive as I do right now
And I never, felt alive as I do right now
I guess my choice is made
I aim to walk away
I lay my guns to the ground
But when I turn around
He cocks that hammer and squeeze
With a thud I fall down to my knees
And I never, felt alive as I do right now
And I never, felt alive as I do right now
