The rays of the tropical moonlight broke into pieces rocking on the waves. Here in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, the breeze brings the sweet smell of blooming lemon trees and burnt sugar. A quick sniff of the air was enough to know the islands are not far away. They're like green twinkling scattered emeralds in the sea and you could feel on each of them that the other one will be more unspoiled and intact than the previous one. It's an ideal home for Robinson Crusoe. Paul Monette starts his novel Havana with these lines. The atmosphere and the natural beauties of Cuba have also inspired others to write poetic lines. It's enough to think of the revolutionary poet Jose Marti and of course Hemingway whose spirit follows the traveler all the way wherever he goes in the country. A long narrow peninsula reaches into the sea 140 km from Havana and 20 km from Matanzas and it separates the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It's Varadero, the world famous resort of the islands which was a popular destination of vacationers and foreign tourists even between the two World Wars. In the 1950s American businessmen invested here having hotels and casinos built in this way. 100000 Americans arrived here to relax and soak up the sun. Life was great. Champagne and rum flowed, cigar smoke was abundant, Caribbean music with its spinning rhythm wafted over the beach and on stage, Cuban girls danced in bikinis decorated with features. Millionaires had their luxurious villas built here. Then politics intervened, there was a revolution and the relationship between Cuba and America is strained yet today as a result. Hotels and villas were taken over by the state. In the meantime Varadero has again become the most popular tourist destination in the world but especially for Europeans. Next to the old ones, new four and five star luxurious hotels meeting everybody's requirements have been built. The majority of them belonged to the former Spanish colonists. On the snow white sandy beach dignified royal palm trees nod. The waters crystalline, turquoise and incredible shades of blues and green. Shops sell Cuban cigars even today and at the bars of the hotels, skillful bartenders mix daiquiris, mojitos and the Cuban libre. The peninsula is closed by a barrier. Here, only taxis or hired cars can enter so tourists can have their holiday without being disturbed. The breeze blowing from the sea moderates the tropical heat. The hotel rooms are of course air conditioned. Restaurants offer specialties of the Caribbean region and international dishes as well. It's especially worth trying the roasted dishes and the aromatic fruit and there are cocktails made without alcohol too. Cuba gives tourist from former east bloc countries a chance to reencounter their past as if they were taking a trip back in time. At the markets, we can buy mainly wood carvings and pottery as souvenirs but cigar boxes equipped with the vapor meter, original machetes, maps drawn on leather and paintings in bamboo frames can also be had. In the street, we can see small two seat motorbikes with yellow cabins which almost look like the tuktuk of Thailand but there are also carts which function as taxis here. In the city, you can take one of the open sightseeing double-deckers. In the city center, we can also see some of the old wooden villas. Among the simple small bungalows, there're some colonial palaces and luxurious vials which have been converted into restaurants. A sort of American travelling monument of the 1950s are old timers and although the most can be seen in Havana, they also add color to the panorama of the city of Varadero. Don't be surprised if somebody starts the engine of his car with a crank. The ignition key may have been taken away by the American owner of the car 40 years ago. The Metrobus, a long bus pulled by a semitrailer holds 200 people at a time transporting them throughout the city which spans 45km. It's the biggest settlement in Central America. Fortunately, the tourist sites are limited to a smaller territory than this in the Vieja Habana, Centro Habana and Vedado City regions. Sought by everyone, relics of the colonial past can be found in the old town Vieja. Outside the former city wall, in the middle of a monumental park, the building of the Capitollo can be found. This huge palace with a white dome is the symbol of the American influence. It was built in 1929, taking the capital in Washington as a model. Due to its designer's healthy Cuban self confidence, it was built to be one meter higher than the original. It served as the parliament of the Cuban republic for three decades. In one of its wings, the House of Representatives and the other wing, the senate was in session. After the victory of the revolution, a new function was given it and today, it is the seat of the Cuban Scientific Academy. Because there's a lot of room left in it, the Museum of Natural Science and the Planetarium were also set up here. The 208 meter wide façade looks under Martilla Esplanade which is always busy and broadens to become a square. Next to the capital, an impressively beautiful building can be seen. This neoclassical palace ornamented with statues columns and small towers is the national theater which was named after the antifascist poet Federico Garcia Lorca. As a result of his beliefs, General Franco had him executed. Exploring the real beauties of the city can be done best on foot but sightseeing can also be continued by hailing a cab. In the street opening opposite, we can find El Floradita which is a bar and a restaurant in one and is one of the most popular in Havana. In the corner of the bar, Hemingway leans against the counter as he used to do when yearning for a swig of daiquiri. This cocktail was first given to workers as a refreshment in the mine the bar was named after. It is made in many ways but its base is Cuban white rum, lemon juice and lots of ice. Sugar syrup, triple sec or maraschino can also be added but it can be made with banana or orange as well and it's best to drink it right here on the spot. The determining elements of the panorama of Havana are the American old timers. In the 1950s, Americans not only bough real estate here, but they also brought their cars which were the most modern at that time. After the revolution, Fidel nationalized the cars too. They belong to the national heritage. They're not for sale even if the collector had paid huge amounts for a chrome osmobile or a pink Cadillac, a wing Chevrolet or a Studebaker. In Cuba, there are no places where they dissemble old cars. The wrecks can still be driven. As spare parts are not available for these models at all, it's a challenge to maintain them. Perhaps there's little money but there's always an idea. The statues represent Taino Indians during their everyday activities mainly fishing and hunting. The Spanish thought the Indians had sunk their treasures here and slaughtered them for this reason. The conquerors didn't find gold. Tourists can't find Indians, although some young Cubans dress up like Indians for the tourists' sake so that they will have somebody to take a photo with. There are plenty of snack bars on the island and accommodation in the palm huts built on pails. The flora and fauna are interesting. Crocodiles don't live in the wild anymore but fishermen can find several kinds of fish and we can see unusual birds too. If we're lucky and keep our eyes open, we can even spot a hummingbird, the smallest bird in the world which only lives here. Indians used to hunt creeping rats and peccaries with their trained dogs. A peccary is a kind of small boar and there are a lot of them living on the island even today but they also liked eating crocodile meat. The waters are full of fish and there are 300 species of birds, 54 of which are native. The water lilies floating on the surface of the water are beautiful and we can also find extraordinary bird nests. Five to six meter long crocodiles with diamond shaped noses used to inhabit the Laguna del Tesoro and the Bogs of Zapata. This large population was turned into boots and handbags by hunters so the remaining ones had to be protected. As a result, crocodile farms were established accommodating other species as well. The reptiles were packed in one of the enclosed bays of Lake Tesoro apparently having no difficulty in breeding in captivity. Today, over 10,000 crocodiles live here. We can observe them from above but we can even hold the babies in our hands. The region is important also from the aspect of history. The nearby Playa Giron was the site of the famous American landing in 1961. 1400 armed soldiers landed hoping to overthrow Castro's regime. 300 of them died. 1100 fell into captivity. Along the road, we can count 85 places commemorating those who lost their lives. A museum commemorates the intervention but aside from this Playa Larga and Playa Giron are nothing more than resorts with sandy coast and shallow water. It's tympanum on the façade has a slashed shape rather than a common triangular one. If it hadn't been for Che Guevara, today's Santa Clara might only have its main square to be proud of. In this way, however, we can't miss the square of revolution and the mausoleum which houses the remains of Che Guevara and 16 of his fellow combatants killed in 1967 during the Bolivia Campaign. In the huge Plaza dela Revolucion, the monumental statue of the hot tempered but ardent commander can be seen from far away. The relief of the pedestal depicts the episodes of Che's life. Across the square, a museum commemorates his life of 39 years. In 1998, Pope John Paul II held mass here with a crowd of worshipers. Live fast, dangerously and die early. This may be the watchword of every true revolutionary but Ernesto che Guevara lived it. He was born in 1928 in Argentina and was executed in 1967 in Bolivia. We can see archaic balconies and ornate barriers, gates hammered with nails, behind the gates, inner yards with flowers, ceilings covered with wood, windows with bars. This is Trinidad, the timeless city. The place everybody must see. Local people said these sentences until in the end UNESCO took it on trust and in 1988, the city of former sugar barons was pronounced a part of the world heritage. It was the third settlement that Velázquez had founded in the land of Cuba. The fertile plain lying between the Escambray Mountains and the sea was favorable for growing sugarcane. Local sugar barons, the Brunette and the Iznaga family had lavish palaces built for themselves from the revenue from sugarcane. At the same time, colonial townhouses were built around the palaces. The boom of the 17th to 19th century was broken by the first war of independence. The plantations were spoiled and the nearly 50 sugar refineries of the neighborhood were destroyed. The bright palaces became uninhabited. The city was inflicted by poverty and decay. During the time between the two World Wars, it was the first time people had tried to revive Trinidad. After the victory of the revolution, museums were set up in the renovated palaces. The half a century that has passed since then has been a continuous fight against missing out on something. Trinidad could be the true jewel box of Cuba if there were more money spent on the renovation and maintenance of buildings. The center of the old town is Plaza Mayor rising like a staircase and embellished with royal palms. On the north side, the neobaroque Holy Trinity Church stands. Next to it, the palace of the Brunette counts which is now a museum. The houses flanking the square from a united architectural group, their harmony unbroken by any other modern buildings. We could say the whole city is a museum. There are museums of architecture, archeology and an exhibition of natural science established by the famous scientist, Alexander von Humboldt.
