❂ 5 Immutable Truths of Diet & Nutrition ❂
Michael Pollan's book: http://amzn.to/1ppLRWt Diet and nutritional advice is constantly changing. But these 5 truths will never change. The Five Immutable Truths of Diet and Nutrition Diet and nutritional advice is constantly changing. At times, it can feel like there is no real TRUTH out there, like nothing is certain about health and nutrition. Well, behind all the fad diets and flavor of the moment ideas, there is an ancient wisdom that many of us have lost. In my opinion, there are five immutable truths to healthy eating. And by immutable I mean that truths are unchanging over time. They look something like this. 1. Whole foods are better than processed I’m not talking about Whole Foods the store. I’m talking about real, unprocessed foods. Fresh produce, meats and proteins, real dairy, fresh eggs, and the bulk bins for nuts, seeds and grains. So whole foods instead of prepared meals, frozen entrees, boxed rice and pasta dishes, canned soups, and so on. The rule of thumb here is to shop the perimeter of the grocery store and avoid the center aisles. 2. Making it yourself is best A study cited in Cooked by Michael Pollan found that, the more time a nation devotes to food preparation at home, the lower its rate of obesity. In fact, the amount of time spent cooking predicts obesity rates more reliably than just about any other measure. In fact, there’s a great scene in the book where Pollan asks a researcher how to undo the damage of our industrial diets and the researcher says, “I have the diet for you: Cook it yourself. Eat anything you want - just as long as you’re willing to cook it yourself." 3. Small farms are better than factory farms Buying your food from small farms over industrial farms is almost always the healthier option. If the farms are organic and local, all the better. The food is fresher, the animals are treated better, and typically there are fewer pesticides and hormones are used. In addition, going small & local is better for the the environment, for the animals, and for the people who work on the farm. To find small farmers near you, visit EatWild.com and RealMilk.com. 4. You can’t go wrong with vegetables Name me one diet, ever, that shunned vegetables. Okay, there may have been some cockamamie all-watermelon diet or something. But let’s look at all the great pillars of food schools: Veganism Vegetarianism Paleo Westin A Price South Beach Weight Watchers Etc. ALL of them are pro-veg. And it’s true. You just can’t go wrong. 5. Everything in moderation Too much of even good things will hurt you. You can drink yourself to death with mineral water, and I’m sure eating too many organic strawberries would do the same. The key is to have a balanced diet with plenty of variety. We live in a wonderful era where there are so many choices available to us, so many ways to get … nutrient profile. And the same goes for quantity. Splurging on a huge meal is fine, whether for the holidays or a special celebration. Go for it! But not every day is a holiday. Be sensible. Michael Pollan said it best. You may not be 280 pounds of muscular mayhem, but if you want to gain size, you need to be ready to eat, and then continuously ask for more. Many lifters think the size battle is won or lost in the gym, but the diet is what separates the beasts from the boys. Learn how Jay Cutler eats, check out what he eats, and take home some nutrition lessons from the man himself. Take in the right food in the right amounts at the right times, and you'll be a mass monster in the making. Let the metamorphosis begin. He trains hard, he works hard, but more than anything, Jay Cutler eats. A lot. "Cooking and eating is five to six hours of my day, no question," Jay says. "If you follow me around for a day or two, you'll see that most of my time is spent eating meals." Food is Jay's biggest expense, his biggest time-sink—and one of the main reasons he's been so monumentally successful. Eating so much so often is Jay's biggest challenge. "The hardest part about being the competitive bodybuilder Jay Cutler is the amount of calories I need to eat," he says. Most bodybuilders love to eat; they crave food. Not Jay: "I have zero cravings and zero anticipation for any meal. I don't look forward to food." Jay may not love it, but he still has to eat every three hours. He eats at midnight, again at three a.m., and then he eats his breakfast at six a.m. "The consumption of food remains consistent, and I still can't eat enough," Jay says. When he's training for a contest, Jay likes to stay home to prepare his food, leaving nothing to chance. "I like to weigh everything," he says. "[Precontest], I take my diet very seriously." Nonetheless, Jay's immense caloric expenditure means he eats food that most clean eaters would avoid. "Having a turkey sandwich and some potato chips is great for me," he says. "I'll have a Snickers bar every once in a while." To keep his size, Jay also needs a pretty consistent fuel of insulin-stoking simple carbohydrates. "Dense, fibrous carbs don't hit my body hard enough." He may not like having to eat as much or as often as he does, but Jay has the experience and willpower to do it well.
