Flemish Separatists Set for Victory in Key Belgium Election
Flemish Separatists Set for Victory in Key Belgium Election
Brussels: Belgium's controversial Flemish separatists looked set to take the lead in a general election yesterday marred by an attack against the Jewish Museum in Brussels, the first such incident in 30 years. First estimates gave 33 per cent of the vote in Flanders to the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) headed by tough-talking Antwerp mayor Bart De Wever. With Flanders in the north accounting for 60 percent of Belgium's population of 11 million, the result, if confirmed, would see the NV-A become the biggest party in the language-divided nation. "Vicit vim virtus", De Wever told supporters in Latin -- meaning "Courage overcame violence". The French-speaking Socialists from southern Wallonia, headed by incumbent premier Elio Di Rupo, scored just over 30 per cent. However, De Wever's lead may prove to be too small to enable him to form a regional government in northern Flanders, while at the federal level he may find it difficult to find allies to join a coalition. Belgium has no national political parties, with the current federal coalition government made up of groups from both sides of its invisible but very real linguistic border. According to tradition, it will be up to King Philip to ask the leader of today's winning party to form a government. It will his first election as king, having come to the throne only last year. Linda van Roy says she could do nothing to help her terminally ill baby in the last hours of her life. In that period, they tell you it's best not to give any fluids, because babies survive on little drops of liquid, she said. So we stopped feeding her. In the end, it was bones and skin and no more baby left. Ten-month-old Ella-Louise died two years ago with Krabbe disease, a rare and terminal genetic mutation that damages the nervous system. In the final days of Ella-Louise's life, when she was being given palliative sedation, van Roy, of Schilde, Belgium, says she could still see the agony on her daughter's face. She died on Tuesday; on Monday, we saw on her face that she was still in pain. And then you start to get angry, because you know that there is no medication left to give her to take away that pain. She wishes she could have administered a fatal dose of medication to make the end of her daughter's short life come more quickly. Unbearable suffering Belgium legalized euthanasia in 2002 for those in constant and unbearable physical or mental suffering that cannot be alleviated. Minors were included in the original proposals but were left out of the final legislation for political reasons. Now, the country's lawmakers are debating a bill which would extend the right to die to those under the age of 18 who are terminally ill and in intolerable physical pain. The bill cleared a senate committee vote on Wednesday; it must clear several other hurdles before becoming law. Since Ella-Louise was only a baby, her case would never have qualified for euthanasia. Under the current rules, the patient must be able to make a repeated request for euthanasia themselves while experiencing unbearable suffering of which there is no prospect for improvement. But van Roy believes that children, and parents of sick babies, should have more options, including the right to choose when to die. We want those children to be able to talk about euthanasia, and if they really want to say: 'Stop, this is it. I don't want it anymore,' we want people to have a choice, she said. Polls show the majority of Belgians agree with the principle of offering euthanasia to children. The current debate is less about whether or not to extend the legislation and more about what conditions to apply to the law: from what age euthanasia should be available and whether that should be with or without parental consent. Parental consent This month, 16 pediatricians wrote an open letter in two national newspapers demanding an extension of the practice. Gerlant van Berlaer from the Free University Brussels was one of them. Doctors do terminate the lives of children as well as adults, but today it's done in a gray zone or in the dark because it's illegal, he said. This means that there's a lot of room to do things the wrong way. Van Berlaer stresses that only a tiny number of children would ever choose to end their lives this way: children with cancer, for example, who are still in charge of their cognitive faculties but in terrible pain. Kenneth Chambaere is a researcher at the Free University Brussels focusing on end-of-life care and euthanasia. He has compared end of life practice in Flanders before and after euthanasia was legalized in 2002, to gauge whether there has been a slippery slope. He says his research shows that although the number of euthanasia requests has gone up, from 1.1% before 2002 to 1.9% by 2008, the number of instances in which doctors have hastened the end of life without patient consent has gone down considerably. And he says minors are only a very small fraction of those deaths in any case. People dying underage mostly die of accidents or trauma, so very sudden deaths where no end-of-life decision making is possible, he said. And a euthanasia request is very rare in those patients. Chambaere argues that the debate in Belgium is more one of principle than anything else; only very few children would ever choose euthanasia but that the law now discriminates against them. Palliative care Experiences in the Netherlands, where patients older than 12 are allowed to request euthanasia with their parents' consent, would seem to support this: Only five children have chosen to die by euthanasia since the law was introduced in 2002. But critics say children cannot reasonably decide whether to end their own lives. read more:- published: 07 Feb 2014

At Wen s meeting with Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo on Thursday both sides agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation. Since China and Belgium established foreign relations four decades ago the two sides have seen their mutual understanding and trust steadily increasing said Wen. Faced with the international financial crisis he said that the two sides should turn the crisis into an opportunity to further deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and inject fresh vigor into the development of bilateral relations. China attaches great importance to Belgium s influence within the EU and on international affairs said Wen adding that Beijing is ready to work with Brussels to enhance dialogues and coordination on hot-button and global issues. In view of the current unfavorable global economic conditions he said China and Belgium should remain committed to keeping their markets open and jointly resist all forms of protectionism. China welcomes more investment from Belgian enterprises and hopes that Belgium will continue facilitating Chinese businesses exploration in the Belgian market Wen said. The two countries need to step up financial cooperation so as to provide better financial services for their companies. China is willing to learn from Belgium s advanced experiences and ideas Wen said The Chinese premier urged the two sides to promote cooperation and exchanges in high technology energy conservation environmental protection education and culture. Di Rupo said China is a key partner for Belgium and his country admires China s achievements and values China s international status and influence. Belgium he said is willing to strengthen high-level exchanges with China and foster a favorable environment for Chinese investors. He also agreed that the two countries should expand cooperation in high technology energy conservation and environmental protection and promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges. In afternoon Wen addressed the 8th China-EU Business Summit which was attended by President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso. The China-EU relationship is among the most important ones in the world and is also a strategic priority of China s foreign policy said the Chinese premier. He said as the most fruitful part of the China-EU relationship two-way trade reached 567.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2011 representing an average annual increase of 20.8 percent since 2003. The EU has been China s top trading partner for eight consecutive years while China- published: 31 Oct 2013

Belgium Strike Namur 2012 News
Tourism in the southern Belgian city of Namur took a beating when Belgian railway workers staged a one-day strike on Tuesday. The 24-hour strike which began at about 1000 local time 2000 GMT on Tuesday was called by the trade unions in protest against a government proposal to consolidate the current three railway companies into two. Namur a popular travel destination in Belgium was hosting the week-long International French-Language Film Festival FIFF when rail workers went on strike. Among the most affected local taxi drivers said they had hoped to make more money during the film festival. Our business was good yesterday. Many people came here to watch movies. Business was a lot better yesterday. Today it is not good said a local taxi driver. Journalists covering the film festival were also affected. Many were stranded in the city as the strike had paralyzed the rail network across the country. The festival organizer had to arrange shuttle buses to send reporters back to Brussels for coaches or air flights still in service. You can go with the Namur official car so they can give you a free ride to Brussels because there is a strike here said Viau Alexandra a journalist covering the film festival. The festival s organizers said that it was not the worst compared with the strikes staged by Belgian trade unions in January in protest against the government s austerity programs which paralyzed the rail road and low-cost airline networks across the country. Creative Departures: Belgium 2012
For our first Creative Departures stop this year, we chose to venture back to Antwerp, Belgium. It is a fitting stop for Gravis, as we have been deeply rooted in the community here for some time. Aside of sponsoring the Antwerp Pro/Am Skate Contest for the past few years, we have been making it a yearly pilgrimage for the skate team to come out to Belgium and the Netherlands. This year we filmed for a few days up the road in Rotterdam which proved to be eventful, visited some better known skate spots in Brussels, then rounded out the trip throwing a three day art show in Antwerp. The art show featured a mixture of Gravis artists and athletes as well as some local artists that were included to bring more of a family vibe to the show. Check out some of the skate spots, restaurants and other places we were hanging on the map below. And yes, there is a red light district in Antwerp. Stay tuned for the next Creative Departures show in Los Angeles this coming February, 2013.
