May Day March Sat May 3

May Day is International Workers’ Day, a commemoration of those who died fighting for the eight hour work day. Black Swan will be marching (along with unions and other socialist and working-class organisations). Look for a red and black flag, our banners, or our book stall.

Meet 10.30 a.m. at the grassy knoll on the King William Road side of Torrens Parade Ground (opposite Festival Theatre).
March moves off at 11 a.m. Route: straight up King William Street, turn right into Currie Street and March down to Light Square. May Day Rally to be held at Light Square.

Break The Chain – Rally outside the Defense Supply Chains Summit Dec 4 – 5

Wednesday and Thursday at the Hotel Grand Chancellor Adelaide is the Defense Supply Chains Summit. We will be protesting there 12 midday each day. Bring drums and placards/banners (Troops Out of Afghanistan, Welfare not Warfare etc).

‘Our guest speaker is Fiona Verity, former Dean of the School of Social and Policy Studies, Flinders University, who has been thinking and writing about welfare (as well as working in the sector) for the past three decades.’

Saturday: ‘Women, Welfare and Poverty’ An anti-poverty week forum.

‘Women, as a group, are over-represented in statistcs for poverty. Why is this? What makes women more vulnerable to poverty and hardship? The organisations of SIMPLA (Stop Income Management in Playford), SPAG (Single Parents Action Group) and the SAFC (South Australian Feminist Collective) will be holding a forum exploring poverty and welfare issues that specifically affect women.’
