Saba, quoting a military source, said more than 10 other militants were wounded in the counterterrorism operations in Shabwa governate. Recent operations against suspected terrorists have included attacks by Yemeni commandos and suspected U.S. drone strikes, a high-level Yemeni government official told CNN Thursday. The Yemeni official, who is being briefed on his nation's ongoing counterterrorism operations, said the raids were "unprecedented" but acknowledged at the time that things in Shabwa "aren't going as well." "It seems like the militants were ready for the operations," the official said. "Resistance has been stronger and casualties among Yemeni military have been higher." The military sent reinforcements to Ataq, capital of Shabwa, on Sunday, Saba reported. Yemen's state-run Saba news agency reports the attack took place in the province of Hadramawt. Security sources earlier said eight had died and six were wounded in an attack that one source attributed to al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). The Yemeni military has been tackling a powerful al-Qaeda insurgency in the province in recent years. Hadramawt is a centre of oil production and seen as a stronghold for AQAP, which has been waging a campaign against the Western-backed government. "Twenty soldiers were killed in the armed attack on an army checkpoint" near Reida, about 135km (85 miles) east of the provincial capital Mukalla, Saba reported. One source told the AFP news agency that the attack was carried out by gunmen in several vehicles. Last year, the army managed to drive al-Qaeda out of towns it had taken over in southern Yemen amidst the chaos triggered by a mass uprising against the veteran President Ali Abdullah Saleh in 2012. But this year, its members appear to have regrouped, carrying out a wave of attacks on security targets, says the BBC's Arab affairs editor Sebastian Usher. In a gruesome warning, the group recently executed one of its own and displayed his body, claiming he had been a spy helping US drones to hit al-Qaeda leaders, he adds. Yemen Wedding Hit By Deadly Air Strike - Breaking News
Yemen Wedding Hit By Deadly Air Strike At least 13 people have been killed by an air strike on a wedding convoy in southern Yemen, say officials. The attack happened near the town of Radda in al-Bayda province, a known stronghold of al-Qaeda. It was unclear what aircraft carried out the attack, though local people said it was a drone. The US has acknowledged using drones as part of its support for Yemen's efforts to tackle militant extremists, but does not comment on individual strikes. Human rights groups say US drone attacks in Yemen constitute unlawful killings . Gunmen attack main Yemen pipeline, halt oil flow
Gunmen attack main Yemen pipeline, halt oil flow
Gunmen launched two attacks on the export pipeline linking Yemen's eastern oil fields to the Red Sea, sparking a fire and halting oil flow, an official and tribal sources said Wednesday. Attacks on oil and gas pipelines in Yemen are frequent and are often carried out by heavily armed tribes as a lever to press for the release of jailed relatives. The latest attacks took place late Tuesday at Al-Hatik, near Wadi Abida in the lawless eastern province of Marib. The unidentified gunmen damaged one part of the pipeline and then launched a second attack some 500 metres (yards) away, a tribal source told AFP. "The pipeline was badly damaged in the attack, which was the most serious this year," an industry official said. "Technicians have not yet managed to control the fire that broke out in the pipeline, interrupting the flow of oil," the official added. The 320 kilometre (200 mile) pipeline links the Safer oilfields to the export terminal in Hodeida province on the coast. Increased security and surveillance has reduced the number of attacks on Yemen's oil infrastructure, with the authorities announcing in February they had foiled a plot by suspected Al-Qaeda extremists to strike a refinery in the southern city of Aden. And last August, Sanaa said it had thwarted an Al-Qaeda plan to storm a Western-run oil terminal and seize the port city of Mukalla overlooking the Arabian Sea. Poverty-stricken Yemen relies on its limited oil and gas resources for exports that generate much-needed revenues. The oil ministry said in December that attacks on oil and gas pipelines cost Yemen $4.75 billion in lost revenue between March 2011 and March 2013. The attack Tuesday comes as Yemen's army is carrying out a major offensive against Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) in the country's rugged southern and central provinces, where a wave of US drone strikes killed scores of suspected Al-Qaeda militants last month. U S suspends public operations at embassy in Yemen
Citing recent attacks, the United States on Wednesday announced that it has suspended public services at its embassy in Sanaa, Yemen. "Due to recent attacks against Western interests in Yemen, we have temporarily suspended operations of our Embassy in Sana'a to the public," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement. "We continue to evaluate the security situation every day, and we will reopen the embassy to the public once it is deemed appropriate." She described the move as a "precautionary step." The temporary suspension of operations is due to a reemergence of a threat from several weeks ago that the United States thought it had disrupted, according to a U.S. official with specific understanding of the current situation. A credible threat to the U.S. Embassy emerged around March, the official said, in the same time frame that a video appeared showing some 100 al Qaeda operatives in Yemen, including several who had broken out of jail the month before. The United States thought that threat had been disrupted by a number of Yemeni actions, including, but not directly related to a series of U.S. drone strikes and Yemeni military operations in early April. But in recent days, the threat stream has reemerged, the official said. It is currently assessed to be credible and somewhat specific in terms of the embassy being the target, according to the source. The United States is still attempting to corroborate the threat and determine whether there is a specific time and date, as well as any other specific locations. A second U.S. official said the suspension of the embassy activity was based on credible information about threats to Western interests. The senior official was not sure whether the threat was embassy-specific. There have been no evacuations of the embassy. The U.S. intelligence community has struggled in recent months to track al Qaeda in Yemen via electronic intercepts because the group has changed its communications, following disclosures last year of U.S. eavesdropping methods. Still, the United States is using electronic tracking, satellite imagery and operatives on the ground to try to determine what may be planned. The United Kingdom, meanwhile, advised against travel to Yemen and urged all British nationals to leave the country. "There is a high threat from terrorism throughout Yemen and specific methods of attack are evolving and increasing in sophistication," the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said in a statement. It continued: "Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has previously targeted western interests and there could be a threat to commercial sites, transport infrastructure, diplomatic missions and any place where westerners gather." Anti-govt. sentiments high in Yemen amid growing fuel crisis
Anti-govt. sentiments high in Yemen amid growing fuel crisis
No fuel, no diesel, no electricity and no hope; this, is how many Yemenis describe the current situation in the country. The ongoing fuel crises have already descended the nation into social unrest. In the capital Sana'a, thousands of cars have been queuing for days at gas-stations. Some vehicle owners say they have been waiting for days to reach the gas pumps. The fuel crisis has also resulted in hours of power outages. Fuel shortages and attacks on power transmitting towers by armed tribesmen have plunged millions of Yemenis into utter darkness.Yemenis who have struggled to cope with the reality of not having access to such basic necessities blame the current transitional government for failing to alleviate the economic and humanitarian destitutions. The current fuel prices in Yemen are set at two thousand and five hundred Yemeni riyals; however, the Yemeni government has recently considered lifting the fuel subsides, a move which economic experts warn could spark an all-out mayhem in Yemen.- published: 15 May 2014
