The Amish - A People of Preservation
The Amish - A People of Preservation
The Amish continue to intrigue their technology-current neighbors by keeping alive ways and beliefs that many modern Americans regard as irretrievably lost to progress. In this colorful, award-winning documentary, newly revised and augmented, Mennonite historian John L. Ruth takes us sympathetically into the Amish mindset. Appreciative neighbors, a well-known physician, an artist, and respected scholar John A. Hostetler, author of Amish Society, provide insightful commentary on the survival of an alternative to the kind of world we have made. As the Amish increase exponentially in numbers, some migrate toward more open farmland. Those staying in centuries-old communities where the land is too crowded to farm have developed an amazing variety of cottage industries. But all changes are made very carefully, in order not to undermine the spiritual covenant and community.- published: 04 Sep 2013

10 Little Known Facts About the Amish
10 Little Known Facts About the Amish
Check out these 10 facts about the Amish. For a group that doesn't believe in watching television, the likeness of the Amish -- and some Amish people themselves -- has been featured on many a program. Still, there exist a lot of gaps in the story. Here are 10 things you may not know about the Amish. Number 10. They have their own language. It's called Pennsylvania Dutch, and is called such due to the large number of Amish people living in the namesake state. The tongue is a combination of Dutch, English, and German. Number 9. Riding in cars is fine. Owning, driving, or even having one within the confines of the community is what's forbidden. Number 8. School attendance past the 8th grade is rare. Based on the 1972 Supreme Court ruling in Wisconsin vs. Yoder, the Amish are given an exception to regular US truancy laws on the basis of religious freedom. Number 7. The Amish are not a cult. Their religion is of the Christian variety. One unique aspect is that they practice adult baptism. They also don't engage in evangelism. Number 6. Beard growing doesn't start until after marriage. Marriage doesn't happen until the person's been baptized. Number 5. The Amish don't go to church. Rather, they have community Sunday services in their own homes. On average, each family hosts once a year. Bigger communities get broken down into smaller, more manageable districts. Number 4. Amish brides make their own dresses. That it be blue is required by some groups, but others leave the color option open. After the wedding day, the woman wears the dress for Sunday services and is eventually buried in it. Number 3. Some technology gets the green light. The decision about what can enter the community is based upon how good it will be for it. Regardless of what's adopted, it cannot require the use of the public energy grid. The sun and batteries are the preferred power sources. Number 2. They believe modern medicine is acceptable. However, they don't believe in insurance. Any treatment or hospital care that is required is paid for by a community fund. Number 1. The Amish pay taxes. All sorts of them, actually - property, income, sales, and so on. What they don't participate in is the Social Security system Their opposition to it is that they see it as a form of insurance, which, as mentioned, they don't do. It's their belief that as a community, it's their responsibility to care for one another. ----------------------------- published: 19 Mar 2014

driven to explore
At the start of 2011, my wife and I decided to finally pursue our dream of travelling - we sold our home, she quit her job, and we hopped on a plane with just our backpacks. This short trailer features some of the footage I shot during our travels together since then. #driventoexplore
http://www.amishsolanki.com
Photo images from our travels on our blog http://www.asphoto.ca/travel
Travel Notes ///
During the two years, we did 4 separate trips, the countries consisting of:
Indonesia, India, Palau, Philippines, Mongolia, Nepal, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and UAE. Most of these are featured in the trailer.
Gear Notes ///
All footage was shot either on a Canon 5D Mark2, 60D or Canon S95 (for underwater footage). Lens choice consisted of: 70-200L 2.8 IS, 24L 1.4, 28 1.8, 16-35L 2.8, 135L 2.0, 45TSE 2.8.
The Canon S95 was housed in a www.Recsea.com housing with a Dyron 16mm fisheye lens. No external videos lights were used, but I did have a ultralight arm set with a http://www.SeaAndSea.com YS-01 strobe (the ultralight arm set helped with camera control for video).
Support gear consisted of a Glidecam 1000HD, Manfrotto 776Y Compact Monopod, Joby Gorillapod Focus with Ballhead X, and a homebrew DIY Slider - I didn't always travel with all of these items but rather chose a couple pieces for each trip (usually 2-4 months at a time).
Backpacks. I'm a bit of a backpack collector, I've taken 3 different backpacks on my trips, trying to find the perfect one. The first two trips I used a Tamrac Evolution 8, second trip was a Lowepro Vertex AW 300, and finally for my last trip (the bag I was always on the lookout for) a http://fstopgear.com Loka.
Before my trek to Everest Base Camp, I wanted a way to keep my camera accessible instead of having to constantly pull it out of my backpack. I knew having to get the camera from my backpack would limit the amount of photos/video that I would be taking. I came across a recent Kickstarter project called the Camera Clip System from https://peakdesignltd.com. I was lucky enough to find one for sale on Craigslist and picked it up. This was hands down one of the best purchases that I had made. If you are interested in purchasing one of their items, make sure to use coupon code: asphoto on their website for a 10% discount.
update: They have recently launched a v2 on kickstarter which looks amazing, can't wait to get my hands on it. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/97103764/capture-camera-clip-v2
Edit Notes ///
In conjunction with my ASUS laptop, we each carried a 1TB external HDD on us for safety, so I always had three copies of any data, in the case something got lost or stolen.
I had to search through over 3TB of footage to compile this trailer together. It took a while.

A rare glimpse into the the life on an Amish Man, Dennis Hochstetler.
For three years I have wanted to do a mini documentary on this Amish carpenter that my good friend Eric Kessler is friends with. The Amish are very private, despite a few rare exceptions, they do not appear on camera and they don’t do interviews! Eric tried to convince him but it was never going to happen.
Whilst over in Indiana in September I wanted to give it one more shot, I wanted to meet him, show him some of work and convince him that all I wanted to do was a short film where I could lean more about their lifestyle and hopefully as people.
Relucatantly he agreed on the provision that none of their faces could be seen and he could approve it before I put it up online. The former...not ideal. To connect ro someone you really need to see their faces, their eyes, but I had to respect this. The latter is something I never do for personal docs. For client work of course, every time. I agreed though. I wanted to make this film as everything about the lifestyle facsinates me...that he had said yes surprised everyone I told where I was staying in Indiana. "The Amish don't go on camera!"
Naturally in ten minutes there is only so much that can be covered. I wanted to learn a litle bit about their history, why they live their lives like this, why they shy away from technology and so much more! Most importantly though I wanted to know the man.
I hope now that I have gained Dennis' trust I can go back for more than an afternoon and really get to know him, his family and their community. I really hope so.
This stuff inside was filmed in the afternoon, includes the interview which gave me a shot list for the next day, basically all my b-roll. I cover this whole idea in the blog post. It's almost written!
TECH STUFF: Shot on the Sony F55 (all the indoors stuff) and the Canon 1DC for the outside B-Roll. There wa a reason for this and it will be covered in the upcoming blog post.
I used the 2 foot Kessler Cineslider for the slider shots and the new Parallax add on the Cineslider and Pocket Dollies for those slider shots where the object remains central. Check it out at gopb.co/kessler
Audio was a Sony UWP wireless mic with Sanken Cos-11 mic. Rode NTG-3 on the Sony F55 and Rode Video Mic Pro on the 1DC.
Lighting was available light and two lights from Gecko, both LEDs. Detailed in the blog post.
Lenses: Sigma 18-35mm F1.8, Canon 70-200 F4 IS, 2X extender. Zeiss ZF Macro 100mm, Zeiss ZF 135mm F2. Rokina 24mm F1.4. Tamron 24-70 F2.8
Edited in Premiere CC in HD and re-linked to 4K. No reframing was done. Why 4K? Because I hadn't shot anything in Sony 4k raw at this point.

"From 1994" Short Film
I made this story in memory of my mom.
"What you say to a loved one if you only had one chance to say it all?" From 1994 seeks to answer this along with the importance of remembering those who we've lost in our lives. We are incredibly humbled by all those who supported our project and want to say thank you for all those involved. It has been our labor of love and we are excited to finally release it. -Casey & Danielle"

SCUBA :: indonesiaPALAUphilippines
Earlier this year, I embarked on what I believe is a life changing trip with my wife, Natisha.
We sold our tiny condo, packed up our belongings, shoved in a backpack what we figured we needed and took off to explore for 3.5 months.
I learnt to dive in 2005 in Fiji. Ever since then, I've been addicted to SCUBA diving.
During our 3.5 month trip, we travelled from Indonesia, India, Palau and Philippines. This video comprises of footage from Indonesia, Palau, and Philippines in no particular order.
Mucho thanks to everyone (Divemasters/buddies) who made all our diving adventures safe and amazing! (Yvette, Dino, Beau, Martin, Vinny, Kristen, and anyone else I might have missed!)
A little info about this video:
Camera: Canon S95 - http://www.canon.ca/inetCA/products?m=gp&pid;=4690
This little point and shoot is simply amazing. Everything shot at 720p HD.
You'll notice in some shots that the color is outstanding (for a point and shoot) and some, well not so much. Anything above 10m+bright sun meant awesome light, but once I was getting down to 30m (ie: shot of the marble ray/sharks) the camera was really pushing for exposure (and unfortauntely I did not have any external strobes at the time). Regardless I'm extremely happy with the outcome.
The other thing to mention is the camera does NOT have any manual options for video mode. You do have options for locking exposure and setting white balance (tricky to set this quickly underwater).
Underwater housing: Recsea - http://www.recsea.com/Recsea/products/compact/canon_whc-s95.html
Unbelievable little housing. Double the price of the camera (as are most underwater housings), but well worth the money. Built like a tank. I looked at both the Canon and Ikelite housing, however both those housings do not allow control over the rear dial on the S95. Since I was shooting stills+video underwater, I needed to have control over the rear dial to fully utilize the camera. This meant getting the Recsea housing. I did not use any wide angle adapter or macro lens with the housing.
It took some time to get comfortable using the housing, mainly due to it's size. It's tiny. Smaller then both the Canon or Ikelite housing. I have a pair of Tusa Tropical SCUBA gloves, which made using some of the controls easier.
I also did not have a tray or grip for the housing, so holding the camera stable took some time+practice. Lots of practice. In some locations (ie: Blue Corner in Palau) it was pretty much impossible to get stable shots due to the strong current, but it sure was fun to practice. I managed to get one good shot of the sharks there after I 'hooked' myself onto the reef.
The housing is made of aluminum, so it is NOT neutrally buoyant. It will sink, and sink fast. I made that mistake once, where I unclipped myself from the housing and dropped it (thinking it was still connected to me). Thankfully I was only a few feet above sand, and it landed softly.
After some practice, I did however use the heavy weight to my benefit and found bare rock/sand to place the housing on, to get the nice solid shots of some of the coral. I think in the future, taking a gorillapod down would work wonders.
One thing is for sure. For those who shoot underwater I have MASSIVE respect for you. It's a totally different ball game down there.

"The Amish: Shunned," premiers February 4th on PBS. Naomi left her Amish family and became a nurse. "It wasn't a decision that one day I just decided to not be Amish. It wasn't like that at all. It was a gradual thing." "I've always felt called to do nursing, but education is a huge threat to the Amish. Having an education means some big job somewhere that would take you out of the community. In the dominant culture of America, I would have been the good kid -- putting myself through college and working full time, but to the Amish I was a little bit of a rebel. I can just imagine some Amish guys stroking their beard and shaking their head, and that's hard for me. I don't want to offend my culture. I don't really know how I would do it differently if I had it to do over, but I wish somehow it wouldn't have to be like that."- published: 31 Jan 2014
