A look at planetary rings, especially those of Saturn where house-sized chunks of ice orbit at 53,000 MPH along a chaotic orbital racetrack; how the rings formed and the dangers they pose to spacecraft. Also a look at other rings around Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, and possibly Mars; plus Earth's "ring" which is made of some 200 satellites in geosynchronous orbit -- the only "man made ring" in the known universe. A planetary ring is a ring of cosmic dust and other small particles orbiting around a planet in a flat disc-shaped region. The most notable planetary rings known in the Solar System are those around Saturn, but the other three gas giants of the Solar System (Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune) also possess ring systems of their own. Reports in March 2008 have suggested that the Saturnian moon Rhea may have its own tenuous ring system, which would make it the only moon known to possess a ring system. A later study published in 2010 revealed that imaging of Rhea from the Cassini mission was inconsistent with the predicted properties of the rings, suggesting that some other mechanism is responsible for the magnetic effects that had led to the ring hypothesis. There are three ways that thicker planetary rings (the rings around planets) have been proposed to have formed: from material of the protoplanetary disk that was within the Roche limit of the planet and thus could not coalesce to form moons; from the debris of a moon that was disrupted by a large impact; or from the debris of a moon that was disrupted by tidal stresses when it passed within the planet's Roche limit. Most rings were thought to be unstable and to dissipate over the course of tens or hundreds of millions of years, but it now appears that Saturn's rings might be quite old, dating to the early days of the Solar System. Fainter planetary rings can form as a result of meteoroid impacts with moons orbiting around the planet or, in case of Saturn's E-ring, the ejecta of cryovolcanic material. The composition of ring particles varies; they may be silicate or icy dust. Larger rocks and boulders may also be present, and in 2007 tidal effects from eight 'moonlets' only a few hundred meters across were detected within Saturn's rings. Sometimes rings will have "shepherd" moons, small moons that orbit near the outer edges of rings or within gaps in the rings. The gravity of shepherd moons serves to maintain a sharply defined edge to the ring; material that drifts closer to the shepherd moon's orbit is either deflected back into the body of the ring, ejected from the system, or accreted onto the moon itself. Several of Jupiter's small innermost moons, namely Metis and Adrastea, are within Jupiter's ring system and are also within Jupiter's Roche limit.[8] It is possible that these rings are composed of material that is being pulled off these two bodies by Jupiter's tidal forces, possibly facilitated by impacts of ring material on their surfaces. Uranus' ε ring also has two shepherd satellites, Cordelia and Ophelia, acting as inner and outer shepherds respectively. Both moons are well within Uranus' synchronous orbit radius, and their orbits are therefore slowly decaying due to tidal deceleration. Neptune's rings are very unusual in that they first appeared to be composed of incomplete arcs in Earth-based observations, but Voyager 2's images showed them to be complete rings with bright clumps. It is thought that the gravitational influence of the shepherd moon Galatea and possibly other as-yet undiscovered shepherd moons are responsible for this clumpiness. Pluto is not known to have any ring systems. However, some astronomers think that the New Horizons probe might find a ring system when it visits in 2015. It is also predicted that Phobos, a moon of Mars, will break up and form into a planetary ring in about 50 million years due to its low orbit.

The Great Red Spot on Jupiter is the largest known vortex in the Solar System and is a anticyclone. It is so big that it could engulf two or three Earths and has been around for almost 350 years. Although the spot is huge it is shrinking according to astronomers, but no ones knows when it will disappear entirely. 2, Jupiter's mass is 318 times the mass of earth, The huge gas planets volume is half again bigger than all of the solar system's other planets, moons, asteroids, and comets combined according to Nasa. The giant planet is 88,730 miles in diameter, which is 11.2 times that of Earth. It is 317.8 times more massive than Earth. But if it got any larger, astronomers believe the planet would become to dense and start to get smaller. 3. Although Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system it certainly isn't slow, the planet only takes about 10 hoursa to complete a full rotation on its axis meaning that one day is only 10 hours long. This rapid rotation also helps generate Jupiter's powerful magnetic fields, and contributes to the dangerous radiation surrounding it. But Jupiter's orbit around the Sun is oval-shaped, It takes 12 Earth years to make one revolution, so a year on Jupiter is equal to 12 years on Earth. 4. Jupiter can't ever become a star because it would need more than 70 times its current mass to ignite nuclear fusion. Stars form directly from the collapse of dense clouds of interstellar gas and dust. Because of rotation, these clouds form flattened disks that surround the central, growing stars. Allowing planets to form including planets like Jupiter. 5. Jupiter has a system of rings called the Jovian ring system, The rings were the third set of rings discovered in our Solar System, after Saturn and Uranus. It was first observed in 1979 by the Voyager 1 space probe and can be observed through Ground-based telescopes. However the rings are much fainter than saturn's and are believed to of come from material ejected by its moons when they're struck by meteorite impacts. 6. So far, Jupiter has a total of 67 moons and almost all of them are less than 10 kilometers in diameter. However the largest moon in the solar system is owned by Jupiter and called Ganymede measuring 5262 km across. The Galilean moons are the largest and most massive objects in orbit around Jupiter, with the remaining 63 moons and the rings together comprising just 0.003 percent of the total orbiting mass. 7. NASA first visited Jupiter in 1973 by the space craft Pioneer 10 and has visited a further 6 times since then. All but one have been flybys that take detailed observations without the probe landing or entering the orbit of Jupiter. Maybe it went through a meteor storm? Can't rule that out. 3) Her camera has a zoom apparently, and no, you don't have to own a telescope in order to view the night sky...although I wish she had a telescope with a camera hooked up to it. 4) She observes Jupiter all the time and this was an anomalous event. 5) All the information is in the original videos which I linked to in the description box and mentioned repeatedly throughout the video. 6) Anomalies occur, very few people catch it, no one can monitor Jupiter 24/7, so it's fantastic when someone catches something interesting. 7) I always share stuff I think is really neat and hope that everyone gets to see the magic of our mysterious universe that Popular Science laughingly thinks "they have under control". 8) This entire event lasted for less than 2 minutes. Think about that. It's very rare to catch something odd like this. 9) Re DSW74: Your video. I know you decided that on your video it was an object passing behind Jupiter which caused the blurry moon shaped object to stick out of it's side. But I wouldn't jump to that conclusion...mainly because you yourself said that that object should not have been visible in your telescope...so if it was...that's an anomaly right there, you just replaced one anomaly with another. Personally, I think there may be more stuff going on on Jupiter than we understand. It's a huge gas giant, all sorts of weird electrical events could happen on it. I would lean toward an anomalous discharge event over an occulation that shouldn't be visible. (The event I'm referring to is DarkSkyWatcher74 filmed something odd with Jupiter also on a different date - "What Is That Object Next To Jupiter?" is the name of his video if you're curious what he got.) More response to comments: I did consider that something may have passed close by to Jupiter and looked everywhere for comets or asteroids that may have passed nearby, I couldn't find anything, but my search was very limited, NASA apparently is not interested in bodies that come close to other planets and so I couldn't find anything listed there. I also looked for possible sun eruptions or flares that may have triggered the event, I gave up. It just plain takes too long trying to find out what might have triggered the event, in the end, I realized that ANYTHING might have triggered it, after all, it's a gigantic ball of gas floating around in an electric universe. The real question is why this doesn't happen more often? Maybe Nibiru passed by it, maybe it was planetary alignment ( I checked, saw nothing special there), maybe a UFO zapped it, maybe an electrical discharge event happened, maybe it was a pole shift, maybe it was a meteor/asteroid bombardment...see? Trust me, I was racking my brains and gave up, the what ifs are endless.
