Latvia became the latest country to join at the start of the year. But the euro's tarnished image is one reason why opinion polls show around half of Latvians didn't want to adopt it. Reasons given included fear of losing sovereignty and having to support other eurozone countries if there were a new crisis, as well as worries that prices would go up. The euro adoption follows years of harsh austerity after Latvia suffered the EU's worst recession. It is now arguably in a better state than much of the rest of the bloc, with economic growth this year forecast by the European Commission to be 4.1 percent compared with the eurozone's 1.1 percent. Unemployment in Latvia is set to be 10.3 percent of the workforce in 2014, with the eurozone average predicted to be 12.2 percent. Latvia joined as the single currency bloc marked its 15th anniversary, and the euro is now used by 333 million Europeans. But the neighbouring Baltic state of Lithuania is the only remaining EU country showing much enthusiasm for euro admission. It is due to join in 2015. Other former Soviet bloc nations such as Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary are reticent about currency union. Within Latvia, businesses are keener that the general population because they expect borrowing costs to be lower and investment to increase. They also see export opportunities within a eurozone that is showing signs of recovery. That was reinforced by figures just released for December which reveal manufacturing in the region grew at the fastest rate since mid-2011. Back to Countryside - Sauna + Bees + Bio / Lauki ienāk pilsētā - Bioloģiskā Saimniekošana
Sauna + Bees + Bio:
Today the sauna is the most efficient place where people can put both their physical and mental health in order. The sauna is a place where the accumulated weight of stress can be easily and joyfully transformed into the sweetness of wellness and happiness. All this is possible if you have mastered the skills to use the power of the plants, the power of the spirit and the power of heat and cold.
One third of the nutritional resources of the human population depend on the pollination of the plants, and the majority of plants are pollinated by bees. This is the particular reason why, despite the small size of the beekeeping industry, pollination allows it to contribute 50 times more to the national economy than the value of the products produced by the beekeepers.
Latvian beekeepers base their production only on the raw materials gathered in Latvia and this encourages sustainable -- environmentally friendly management.
Organic farming is the certified production of fresh and delicious agricultural products, using methods which respect the environment and animal welfare, as well as create new opportunities for the residents of rural regions. Any products with the label "biological", "eco", "bio" or "organic" must be produced according to strict regulations of the European Union. Only a certified food product may have the label --ECO or BIO -- in its title!

Baejarins Bestu Hot Dog Stand Friday May 23rd 2008
This work is based on articles about the ”new” icelandic finance scene, that claim i.e that the youngsters of Iceland these days wish to
become businessmen rather than rockstars.
Wearing a funny masque I set out to talk about serious things with the Reykjavik crowd.
I asked people to show me on a Reykjavik map where I could find power. Banks and parliaments were the most common things mentioned.
When asking about the future of Iceland most people said it was bright...
After the collapse of the Icelandic economy (October 2008) this work changed dramatically...
The documentation of this work has been edited into a film of 15min. The film had it’s premiere in the film programme of the
second Survival Kit festival in Riga Latvia in September 2010.

Tele2 Meteorite
In a market saturated with mobile communications advertising, Tele2 needed to break through advertising clutter to improve perceptions and persuade customers to choose Tele2.
The solution was an explosive brand relaunch. The relaunch, which was built to appeal to Latvia’s love of rumour, revelation and debate, was designed to promote an innovative new tariff.
A fake meteorite crash was staged in the backwoods of Latvia. Evidence of a possible meteorite crash was confirmed in a firefighter’s official report. A video of the crash was seeded in social media and quickly made the breaking news on mainstream media.
Our “space visitor” blew the dismal state of Latvia’s economy off the front pages for almost a week. The day following the crash, experts arrived to discover that the crater was actually man-made. This led to speculation on who initiated this audacious stunt.
On the same day, Tele2 owned up to the stunt by announcing that the meteorite landing was staged to move attention away from the economic recession to prove that there is more to life than the crisis.
Two weeks later a new flat rate tariff called “Meteorite” was launched.

EPAC box-Erling T.V. Klingenberg & Adalsteinn Stefansson-Reykjavik Art Museum-Kjarvalsstadir, Reykjavik Iceland
Grabbing the void
The artists Erling T.V. Klingenberg and Adalsteinn Stefansson did this work specially for this box made in Riga, Latvia. The project is organized by EPAC-European Public Art Centre and recently the same style of boxes have been a platform for artists in Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Portugal, Spain, Poland, United Kingdom and now on Iceland (further info: http://www.epacpublic.eu/). Erling and Adalsteinn call this work “Grabbing the void”, - that is a known experience these years among the common public of the Western-world and beyond when dealing with the economy - where many things disappear into the whirlpool - that sucks everything to untraceable places. But the work can also be viewed from many other sides - at least four .
Erling and Adalsteinn would like to thank the following for all the work and assistant in the making: Guðlaugur Kristinn Óttarsson, prófessor in Electronic engineering, head-designer of tech solutions. Ragnar Þórisson, professor in Turning, designer of mechanical components. Hermann Karl Björnsson, student in programming. Eyjólfur Guðmundsson, student, electronic circuits & mechanical implementation Bjarni Freyr Þórðarsson, student, electronic circuits. Davíð þór Sævarsson, mechanical implementation.
Also thanks to: Guðlaugs K. Óttarssonar & co / Rafal ehf. / Pétur Örn Friðriksson / Reykjavik Art Museum

However two of the eurozone's big economies France and Italy both contracted by 0.1%. Only Cyprus and the Czech Republic did worse.
