Apparently the deliberate drama imposed on “Dance Moms” is literally quite real, as Abby Lee Miller, star and owner of Abby Lee Dance Company has been slapped with a lawsuit from Kelly Hyland, cast member and mother of dancers Brooke and Paige, reported by Deadline on Friday.
The legal documents were filed on Thursday and list Kelly, Brooke and Paige as the plaintiffs against Collins Avenue Entertainment, LLC, "Dance Moms" producers, and Abigail Lee Miller, defendants. According to Deadline the lawsuit is a result of the alleged defamation and assault of Kelly Hyland by Abby Lee as a result of a fight that broke out on the February 11th episode of “Dance Moms”, which was taped at a dance competition in the Bronx on November 22.
It is no secret that Kelly Hyland and Abby Lee have bad blood between the two, which viewers of “Dance Moms” can attest to. The Hyland family has left the tutelage of the Abby Lee Dance Company, and returned, despite Kelly’s long tradition of dance with the Miller family.
However, Hyland asserts the drama on “Dance Moms” is enticed by the producers, which in this instance turned to violence.
The producers of the show [Collins Avenue Entertainment], in an effort to attract ratings and viewership, encourage and facilitate conflicts between Miller on the one hand and the young girl dancers and their mothers on the other.
The lawsuit against Abby Lee states Miller repeatedly “lunged” for Kelly Hyland in an attempt to bite the “Dance Mom”. Hyland slapped Abby Lee in an attempt to fend off the “teeth gnashing” as a matter of purported self-defense. Additionally, Hyland claims the producers of the reality TV show insisted a warrant be issued for her arrest to add to the drama. As a result, the “Dance Mom” turned herself into local authorities and was arrested.
The “Dance Mom” lawsuit also contends Abby Lee defamed Kelly Hyland during a recent appearance of “The View”. Hyland is asking for $5 million in punitive damages and payment of lost wages among other things.
