Question

I recently looked at a used car from a private seller for my niece, the woman selling the car had misplaced her registration papers and could not remember the exact expiry date of the registration. With no rego stickers on cars anymore here in NSW it was a bit off-putting and we walked away from the sale. My question is how can you check if a car is registered outside of the RMS’s trading hours?

Answer

The quickest way to check if a car is registered in NSW is to download the “NSW Rego App” to your Smartphone. You can check if a vehicle is registered within seconds. The app also has a link to the PPSR (Personal Property Securities Register) to check if the vehicle you are purchasing is encumbered and a link to the Vehicle History Check site so you can see if the vehicle has been written off in NSW or interstate, both of which Drive strongly recommends when purchasing a vehicle privately. If you don’t have a Smartphone you can go online or contact the RMS during trading hours.
