An exact death toll has has yet to be confirmed; a spokesperson for Russia's state Investigative Committee said at least 14 people have died; while the regional governor said there were 15 casualties. The bomber, who has not yet been named, detonated the device just before reaching the metal detectors in Volgograd station. Russia's Investigative Committee representative, Vladimir Markin, spoke of the force of the blast. "The power of the explosion was equivalent to at least 10 kilograms of TNT," he said. "The explosive device was stuffed with pieces of scrap metal and the blast happened near the metal detectors located at the entrance to the station" Dmitri Makovkin, a 29-year-old police officer, reportedly perished on site while stopping the bomber from advancing further into the station. This is the second deadly attack in southern Russia in three days. On December 27, a car bomb in Pyatigorsk killed three people; while on October 21, 2013, a female suicide bomber also struck in Volgograd, killing seven people. President Vladimir Putin has apparently ordered law enforcement agencies to improve security. While a federal police spokesman said there will be increased security at train stations and airports. Sunday's attack will bolster fears of attacks by Islamist militants as Russia prepares to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. Volgograd lies close to Russia's North Caucasus, a strip of mostly Muslim provinces plagued by near-daily violence. In a video posted online in July, Islamist insurgent leader and Chechen warlord, Doku Umarov, urged militants to use "maximum force" to prevent President Putin from staging the Olympics. The Games will be held in the Black Sea city of Sochi, around 690 kilometres from Volgograd, in February 2014. Sunday's attack was the deadliest to strike Russia's heartland since Islamist insurgents killed 37 people at a Moscow airport in January 2011. Deadly Blast At Russia Train Station in Volgograd - An explosion at a train station in the southern Russian city of Volgograd has killed at least 13 people, reports say. A female suicide bomber was thought to be responsible for the blast, Russia's anti-terrorism committee said. A suspected female suicide bomber killed at least six people when she attacked a bus in the city in October. Moscow is concerned militant groups could be ramping up violence in the run up to the the 2014 winter Olympic Games in the city of Sochi in six weeks. An Islamist insurgency in the North Caucasus region has led to many attacks there in recent years. Insurgents have also attacked big Russian towns. Volgograd lies about 900km (560 miles) south of Moscow, 650km north of the North Caucasus and 700km north-east of Sochi. 'Act of terrorism' Sunday's explosion rocked Volgograd-1 station at around 12:45 (08:45 GMT), shattering windows and sending plumes of smoke from the station entrance. Ambulances rushed the injured to hospital, while footage from of the station's entrance showed bodies laid out beside ambulances, with debris and shattered glass strewn on the station steps. Interfax news agency quoted a source as saying the bomb was detonated near the metal detectors at the station entrance. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the blast, which local officials said claimed at least 18 lives and left dozens more injured. "Initial indications are that the blast was set off by a female suicide bomber," said the National Anti-Terror Committee said in a statement. The incident was being treated as an act of terrorism, said Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin. In July, Chechen insurgent leader Doku Umarov posted an online video urging militants to use "maximum force" to prevent the Games from going ahead. PESHAWAR: Police in Peshawar have recommended a teenager who was killed stopping a suicide bomber from attacking a school for a top civilian honour. Aitzaz Hassan, 15, a student in Hangu district, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, on Monday tackled the bomber who had come to attack his school at a time when hundreds of students were inside. Hassan died in hospital after the bomber blew himself up at the school gates. No one else was wounded or killed in the incident. Nasir Khan Durrani, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief of police, has written to Chief Minister Pervez Khattak recommending Hassan for the posthumous award, a police statement issued late Thursday said. "The suicide bomber tried to enter the school where hundreds of students were studying. Aitzaz Hassan sacrificed his life and stopped the bomber with bravery and courage," the police statement said. "He saved the lives of hundreds of innocent students with his extreme valour and bravery." Pakistan has several categories of civilian award and it will fall to the government to decide which, if any, Hassan should receive. Hassan's father Mujahid Ali Bangash told AFP on Thursday he felt not sadness but pride at his son's death. "Many people are coming to see me but if they try to express sympathy, I tell them to congratulate me instead on becoming the father of a martyr," he said. "I will be even more than happy if my second son also sacrifices his life for the country." Local media are calling Hassan a hero, while social media is demanding recognition for him. An editorial in Dawn, the country's oldest English-language newspaper, said Hassan's selfless bravery should be an inspiration to other Pakistanis and a lesson to the authorities in the courage needed to stand up to extremists.
