Audi’s born-again Sport Quattro is almost set for blast off.

The German car maker revealed an updated version of the heroic hybrid-powered coupe it first showed at the 2013 Frankfurt motor show at this week’s 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to showcase its latest laser headlight technology.

And a spokesman for the company has confirmed the 515kW V8 petrol-electric machine is close to receiving a green light for production.

“We had a similar car to that in Frankfurt and the reaction was quite good, so it is not so far away,” Audi product communications manager, Christian Bangemann, told Drive at CES.

“We could do that. All the technical [aspects] inside, our engineers have invented and it is based on the modular MLB construction and we will bring this first in the A6.

“This car could be on the road. It would not be very complicated.”

While the car is technically showroom ready, Bangemann admitted Audi is still mulling over the business case as it is expected the Sport Quattro could cost as much as the company’s mid-engined R8 supercar with an anticipated pricetag of around $400,000.

He said the initial reaction following its Frankfurt unveiling was positive and that it will gauge similar feedback from North American customers at CES and next week’s 2014 Detroit motor show before rubber stamping the project.

“In the end someone has to buy it; it is not just two or three hundred but several thousands,” Bangemann said.

“And we use this fair to look for the customer and more reactions.”

Bangemann could not confirm whether the Sport Quattro will be produced in right-hand drive and available for Australia yet.
