Infiniti's new performance car concept, the Q50 Eau Rouge.

Infiniti has offered up a number of new images of what could be its rival to the BMW M3 and Mercedes C63 AMG, with a concept version of its Q50 sedan which it claims is inspired by its formula one involvement with champion team Red Bull Racing.

The luxury arm of Nissan has yet to reveal any major details of the performance-oriented Q50, except that it will be called Eau Rouge – named after the famed corner at the Spa Francorchamps circuit that hosts the Belgian Grand Prix each year – and features “aerodynamic styling treatments and design elements which are influenced” by its F1 relationship.

All that is clear is that the Q50 Eau Rouge has a unique lower section to its front bumper with bigger side intakes, additional LED driving lamps and what looks like a carbon fibre spoiler with a raised wing section at each end.

What lies under its bonnet will remain a mystery until it is officially revealed at the Detroit motor show in January, but if it is truly “inspired by formula one” then it could feature the first application of the next-generation Nissan GT-R’s hybrid 3.8-litre turbo charged V6 to match F1’s move to turbo six cylinder powertrains with more powerful KERS systems in 2014.

Whatever the case ends up being, it will need to produce over 300kW of power to rival the likes of the next-generation M3/M4 with their 316kW twin-turbo 3.0-litre sixAudi’s 331kW RS4 and Mercedes-Benz AMG’s all-new C63 which is expected to be powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with around 380kW.

No doubt, Infiniti will claim the Q50 has been developed with direct input from four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel who is the company’s Director of Performance.
