Two elderly women were in a critical condition in Canberra Hospital on Sunday night after a three-car accident on George Bass Drive in Batehaven.

A third woman was also in  the hospital as a result of the crash, in a serious but stable condition.

Four people were injured in the accident, which occurred at the corner of George Bass Drive and Glenella Road at about noon.

A NSW Police spokesperson said the accident was caused by one car swerving into the oncoming lane and colliding with another vehicle.

Both drivers were taken to hospital, along with one passenger. Police said the two women in a critical condition were Sunshine Bay residents.

A third car swerved to avoid the vehicles, but hit a cyclist. The third driver was unhurt and the cyclist received minor injuries.

The Snowy Hydro SouthCare helicopter evacuated the three women to the Canberra Hospital in two trips.

Police were still at the scene late on Sunday night. A crime scene had been established and forensic specialists brought in to examine the area.
