Firefighters have contained a large grass fire near Yass, which closed the northbound lanes of the Hume Highway for several hours on Sunday.
The fire near Bowning, south of Yass, burnt about 200 hectares before it was contained by about 120 firefighters from the NSW Rural Fire Service about 10pm on Sunday.
There have been unconfirmed reports of damage to property and the death of livestock, with further investigations expected on Monday.
The fire began just before 6pm Sunday and spread quickly, burning a large area in less than two hours.
The highway has since been fully reopened.
"It goes to show you how quickly grass fires can move at this time of year," a NSW RFS spokesperson said.
At the peak of the danger, 40 fire trucks attended the blaze along with three fixed-wing aircraft.
The cause of the fire is not known, but will be investigated on Monday.
Fire crews were also on scene at another small grass fire near Murrumbatemen on Sunday. According to the NSW RFS website, the fire near Bushs Lane was about 15 hectares in size, but was under control on Sunday night.
