DHS Cannot Provide Answers Regarding the Security of Healthcare.gov
U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10), Vice Chair of the House Committee on Homeland Security, participated in a hearing discussing the role of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to secure personal information being entered into Healthcare.gov databases. DHS is charged with securing all .gov entities; however, witnesses testifying before the committee were unable to provide any answers regarding the security planning of Healthcare.gov and to ensure American citizens personal information is not compromised. Miller said: "The Obamacare website has faced so many challenges since its launch on October 1st. We have American citizens going onto the Healthcare.gov website to provide their most personal and sensitive information -- and yet there is a very real concern regarding the security protections, or lack thereof, within this website. Americans deserve better. "One thing became clear during the testimony our committee received today from the Department of Homeland Security witnesses - DHS played little to no role in planning, designing and implementing the security portions of the Healthcare.gov website. I find it astonishing that DHS, which is the department charged with protecting federal government websites from cybersecurity threats, was not heavily consulted in ensuring the security of this website. "The vulnerability of the health care website is of great concern, and again we ask, how can this Administration force American citizens to enter their most personal and sensitive information into a database that has yet to be fully tested and without top security standards in place? The Administration must act today to delay the implementation of this poorly planned and burdensome health care law. Americans deserve to have the confidence that their personal information is protected." ###- published: 13 Nov 2013

Amina Mohammed faults the security council for ignoring African voice
Foreign Secretary Amina Mohamed has faulted the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for failing to listen to the African voice in its decision on the Kenyan ICC cases. UN Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos briefs the Security Council on Syria
In the three weeks since the Security Council adopted its Presidential Statement calling on all parties to Syria's conflict to facilitate the work of humanitarian organizations, the situation has worsened with civilians more vulnerable and aid organizations finding it even more difficult to access communities in need. This was the grim assessment delivered by UN Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos in a briefing to the Security Council this morning (25 October). "Despite the Council's grave alarm at the significant and rapid deterioration of the humanitarian situation, and its call for urgent increased humanitarian action, fighting continues to intensify across the country and its impact on civilians continues to grow each day," said Ms. Amos. Ms. Amos told the Council that Government and opposition forces have laid siege to a number of cities and towns, trapping civilians and cutting off their access to basic services. "We are still unable to provide assistance to an estimated 2.5 million people trapped in hard to reach and besieged areas," she said. "Many of [these people] have not been reached for almost a year." This figure of 2.5 million represents more than a third of the 6.8 million that the UN estimates are in need of assistance. The number of people fleeing their homes continues to grow. An estimated 4.25 million Syrians are now displaced within their own country. Many are living in makeshift or improvised shelters, leaving them exposed as winter approaches. A further 2.1 million have left the country, spreading the humanitarian impact of the crisis into neighbouring countries. "Three weeks have passed [since the Security Council adopted its statement]. Each day that passes without the parties upholding their most basic obligations results in more lives lost, more displaced people, more people denied access to the most basic services.- published: 25 Oct 2013
