Seven of the 52 people arrested on Tuesday in a corruption crackdown in Turkey have been released.

But the country\'s prime minister continues to denounce the operation as an attempt to smear his administration.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the detention of many of his allies was a dirty operation ahead of next year\'s elections and a bid to undermine the country\'s progress.

In an address the prime minister reacted to the corruption probe which is Turkey\'s biggest since he swept to power in 2002 with a warning:

Britons are being evacuated from South Sudan as fighting spreads through the state after an apparent coup at the weekend.

A plane has been sent to the state to remove more than 150 British citizens who have contacted the Foreign Office wanting to leave the country.

Embassy staff were among those being evacuated although the Foreign Office emphasised that it would be keeping open its embassy in the capital, Juba.

The United Nations has estimated that up to 500 people have been killed in fighting between rival factions following a coup attempt against President Salva Kiir by soldiers loyal to his former deputy.

Some 10 senior government ministers were arrested at the beginning of the week but fighting continues amid increasing political tensions.

South Sudan won its independent from the north in 2011 but has struggled with corruption and ethnic violence since.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that around 20,000 people have taken refuge with the UN in Juba.

The Foreign Office has advised against all travel to within 40km of South Sudan\'s northern border with Sudan, Jonglei State and Juba, and all but essential travel to the rest of South Sudan.

False intelligence extracted by torture in Tripoli\'s notorious Abu Salim prison has been linked to arrests of Libyan dissidents in the United Kingdom, an investigation by Al Jazeera\'s People and Power has revealed.

In this exclusive report, Abdel-Hakim Belhaj, the leader of the anti-Gaddafi resistance group, the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), explains that he and fellow leader Sami al-Saadi were subjected to torture by his Libyan interrogators, which forced them to give up the names of innocent residents in the UK.

Al-Saadi and Belhaj also claim foreign agents, including British agents, questioned them in Abu Salim prison. These allegations form the basis of a lawsuit against the British government.

According to Belhaj\'s lawyers, the men and their families were pawns in a deal struck by Britain in 2004.

After Gaddafi\'s fall, the role played by British intelligence agencies was discovered.

AFGHANISTAN After US Withdrawal: Return Of The TALIBAN & CIVIL WAR

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said that the withdrawal of the US-led forces from his country will lead to the return of the Taliban. The US and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of the so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity remains across the country. In this episode of INFocus, we will examine whether or not the withdrawal of the US-led foreign troops will push the country to a bloody civil war, to what extent the Taliban is already in control of the country and what share of any future government they could expect to gain.

Bernanke made the comments at a news conference after the Fed announced it would reduce its bond purchases by 10 billion USD (around 7.3 billion euros) in January. "Today's policy actions reflect committee assesment that the economy is continuing to make progress, but that it also has much further to travel before conditions can be judged normal," Bernanke said. However Bernanke cautioned that the Fed's further reductions in the purchases remain dependent on data. The US stock market rose sharply after the Fed's announcement that it would slow down its efforts to boost the US economy. In what amounts to the beginning of the end of its unprecedented support for the US economy, the central bank said it would reduce its monthly asset purchases by 10 billion dollars to total 75 billion dollars )around 54 billion euros). It trimmed equally from mortgage and Treasury bonds. The Federal Reserve has rediscovered its roots, in essence that the FED was created to stabilise the financial system in times of panic and we did that." But the country's prime minister continues to denounce the operation as an attempt to smear his administration. Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the detention of many of his allies was a dirty operation ahead of next year's elections and a bid to undermine the country's progress. In an address the prime minister reacted to the corruption probe which is Turkey's biggest since he swept to power in 2002 with a warning: "As we fight to establish Turkey in the top 10 countries of the world by 2023 there are some," he said, "who are engaged in an effort to halt our fast growth." Police searching the homes of some of the detained which included the sons of three cabinet ministers, found what was described as millions of euros in cash hidden in shoe boxes. Following the arrests, the government hit back by removing senior police officers from their posts accusing them of abusing their office in organising the raids. South Sudan's President Salva proceeds to address a news conference at the Presidential Palace in capital Juba South Sudan's President Salva Kiir UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that around 20,000 people have taken refuge with the UN in Juba. The Foreign Office has advised against all travel to within 40km of South Sudan's northern border with Sudan, Jonglei State and Juba, and all but essential travel to the rest of South Sudan. A spokeswoman said: "A UK aircraft is en route to Juba to evacuate British nationals who wish to leave from Juba airport on Thursday 19 December. MI6 Involved In Torture In Libya?
MI6 Involved In Torture In Libya?
  • Order:
  • Duration: 2:32
  • Updated: 18 Dec 2013
False intelligence extracted by torture in Tripoli's notorious Abu Salim prison has been linked to arrests of Libyan dissidents in the United Kingdom, an investigation by Al Jazeera's People and Power has revealed. According to Belhaj's lawyers, the men and their families were pawns in a deal struck by Britain in 2004. After Gaddafi's fall, the role played by British intelligence agencies was discovered. "When the rebels came to Tripoli they ransacked all sorts of buildings ... associated with Gaddafi's old regime," said Al Jazeera's Juliana Ruhfus, who was involved in the investigation. "It was in the office of spy chief Moussa Koussa that they found a stash of documents that revealed, in startling detail, the collaboration between British and Libyan intelligence services." Belhaj says he was pressured by Gaddafi's interrogators to give up information about Libyans living in Britain. "Sometimes they would come to me with the questions and answers already done and force me to sign it. They would mention names to me and say that these people supported armed activities," he said. One of the men named under torture was Ziad Hashem, a Libyan who obtained asylum in the UK after Belhaj's rendition. Hashem claims he was arrested in Britain without any charges: "We were just put in prison arbitrarily without any explanation." Hashem is part of yet another law suit against the British government. One of the things he is hoping to reveal is the flow of information between Libyan and British intelligence agencies which led to his detention. The British government says it is committed to investigating allegations of mistreatment, that it stands firmly against torture and that it never asks any other country to carry it out. But the dissidents accuse the British government of being complicit in their rendition into Gaddafi's prisons, showing Al Jazeera documents from MI6 tipping off Gaddafi's intelligence apparatus about their flight movements.

As its military and economy have grown, so too have China's dreams of dominating an island chain centered on Taiwan and including Japan's Senkakus. China's increased belligerence in the region is part of its plan to control the Yellow Sea, the South China Sea and the larger East China Sea. Its military doctrine refers to dominance over the "first island chain," which encompasses the East China Sea. The next step is dominance over what Beijing calls the second island chain extending from Japan to Indonesia. Some analysts have even speculated about plans for a third island chain strategy extending as far as Hawaii. As part of its plans, China on Saturday announced an air defense identification zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea effective Nov. 23. Its military will take "defensive emergency measures" if aircraft enter the area without reporting flight plans or identifying themselves. China's defense ministry warned in a statement that all aircraft that fail to comply with its new rules for transit through the zone could be shot down. Media reports say that the ministry issued a map showing the new East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone, including what the Chinese call the Diaoyu Islands. The map of the new defense zone, pulled off a Chinese website, shows that it overlaps Japan's defense zone over the Senkakus, a group of uninhabited islands located south of Okinawa and north of Taiwan that sit atop significant oil deposits. Tensions escalated in February when Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe denounced what he said was China's use of fire-control radar in January twice on Japanese targets in the East China Sea. Japan's Defense Ministry said that it sent jets up 306 times in the 12 months ended in March 2013 and 149 times in the April-September period in response to Chinese incursions. The islands became Japan's territory after it defeated China in their 1894-1895 war. It was only after a 1968 United Nations survey reported the huge oil and gas potential of the area that Beijing began to protest the 1972 U.S. return of the islets to Japanese control as part of Okinawa. The U.S. is obligated to defend the islands under the 1960 U.S.- Japan Security Treaty, which covers all territories under Japanese administration, including the Senkakus http://news.investors.com/112513-680586-beijing-east-china-sea-maritime-grab.htm?ven=fox_businesscp&src;=aurlaeu

It has signed a contract with three United Nations agencies - the UN refugee agency, the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF - to help refugees and local communities in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. It comes as a harsh winter threatens even more suffering. "If one year ago, we knew how it will be today, what could have been the decisions then? I am sure that if we could have that focus, the decisions could have been much more ambitious," said the European Commission President José Manuel Barroso. A statement by UN and EU leaders said some 9.3 million Syrians needed help, the number of internally displaced people had grown to 6.5 million and more than 2.2 million refugees had fled the country. This week the United Nations appealed for 6.5 billion US dollars (4.7 billion euros) for Syria and its neighbours to help 16 million people, many of them hungry or homeless. The heads of the UN and EU aid agencies called for a "humanitarian ceasefire" in Syria to allow convoys to deliver help to areas beyond the reach of aid workers. The WFP said access remains difficult in many parts of Syria, including in both government and opposition-held zones.
