Iran and the West is the name of a three part British documentary series shown in February 2009 on BBC Two to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1979 Iranian Revolution. The documentary looks at the relationship between Iran and the countries of the west and features interviews with politicians who have played significant roles in events involving Iran, Europe and the United States since 1979. The series is produced by Norma Percy, whose previous series include The Death of Yugoslavia and Israel and the Arabs: Elusive Peace.

Militant Islam enjoyed its first modern triumph with the arrival in power of Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran in 1979. In this series of three programmes, key figures tell the inside story.

Former US president Jimmy Carter talks on television for the first time about the episode that, more than any other, led American voters to eject him from the presidency. Iran\'s seizure of the US embassy in Tehran and the holding of its staff for 444 days took more and more of Carter\'s time and energy. His final days in office were dominated by desperate attempts to secure the release of the embassy hostages. Those who sat in the White House with him, planning how to rescue the hostages, how to negotiate their release and, finally, wondering whether anything could be rescued from the disaster, all tell their part in the story.

Other contributors include former vice president Walter Mondale, ex-deputy secretary of state Warren Christopher and former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski. The other side of the story is told by top Iranians: Ayatollah Khomeini\'s close adviser, Grand Ayatollah Montazeri; his first foreign minister, Ebrahim Yazdi; his negotiator with the US, Sadeq Tabatabai; and the founder of Iran\'s Revolutionary Guard, Mohsen Rafiqdoust

Second episode in the documentary series marking the 30th anniversary of the Iranian Revolution. Inside stories are told by two ex-presidents of Iran, Hashemi Rafsanjani and Mohammad Khatami, by two founders of Iran\'s Revolutionary Guard, and by leading westerners including Secretaries of State George Shultz, Warren Christopher and Madeleine Albright.

In part three of this landmark series from Norma Percy and the team that made the multi-award winning documentaries The Death of Yugoslavia and Elusive Peace: Israel and the Arabs, contributors including Iran\'s President Khatami tell the inside story of the West\'s continuing nuclear confrontation with Iran. The film also shows a rare moment when they worked together.

US State Department insiders tell how, after 9/11, Iran played a key role in helping America to topple the Taliban in Afghanistan - only for President Bush to put Iran into his \'axis of evil\' immediately afterwards. Jack Straw, then foreign secretary, and President Khatami describe how Iran offered to help the US and its allies in their war against Saddam Hussein - help that, given Iran\'s powerful contacts in Iraq and the West\'s subsequent difficulties there, might have made a crucial difference.

Jack Straw, his successor Margaret Beckett, and Joschka Fischer of Germany describe how they struggled to find a compromise between Iran and President Bush\'s hardliners over Iran\'s nuclear programme. John Sawers at the UN reveals an extraordinary secret deal that Iran proposed a few years later.

US Secretary of State John Kerry warns of significant differences between Iran and the six world powers trying to fashion a nuclear agreement, as he and three European foreign ministers add their weight to try to narrow the gap.

Officials had expressed optimism about progress achieved in Thursday\'s full day of talks. But comments from Mr Kerry and his counterparts from Britain, France and Germany after they arrived in Geneva clearly indicated that some obstacles remain in the way of any agreement offering sanctions reductions for nuclear concessions.

Mr Kerry arrived from Tel Aviv after talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu where he tried to defuse Israeli concerns about the Geneva talks. Israel is strongly critical of any deal that even slightly lifts sanctions unless Iran is totally stripped of technology that can make nuclear arms.

The talks primarily focus on the size and output of Iran\'s enrichment programme, which can create both reactor fuel and weapons-grade material suitable for a nuclear bomb.
Iran insists it is pursuing only nuclear energy, medical treatments and research, but the United States and its allies fear that Iran could turn this material into the fissile core of nuclear warheads.

Mr Kerry said there were \

In which John Green teaches you about Imperialism. In the late 19th century, the great powers of Europe were running around the world obtaining colonial possessions, especially in Africa and Asia. The United States, which as a young country was especially suceptible to peer pressure, followed along and snapped up some colonies of its own. The US saw that Spain\'s hold on its empire was weak, and like some kind of expansionist predator, it jumped into the Cuban War for Independence and turned it into the Spanish-Cuban-Phillipino-American War, which usually just gets called the Spanish-American War. John will tell you how America turned this war into colonial possessions like Puerto Rico, The Philippines, and almost even got to keep Cuba. The US was busy in the Pacific as well, wresting control of Hawaii from the Hawaiians. All this and more in a globe-trotting, oppressing episode of Crash Course US History.

Our Subbable Dooblydoo message today is from James Williams. He writes, \

History of Modern Iran: A Nuclear Islamic Republic | BBC Documentary
  • Order:
  • Duration: 59:07
  • Updated: 18 Feb 2013
Iran's seizure of the US embassy in Tehran and the holding of its staff for 444 days took more and more of Carter's time and energy. The other side of the story is told by top Iranians: Ayatollah Khomeini's close adviser, Grand Ayatollah Montazeri; his first foreign minister, Ebrahim Yazdi; his negotiator with the US, Sadeq Tabatabai; and the founder of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, Mohsen Rafiqdoust Second episode in the documentary series marking the 30th anniversary of the Iranian Revolution. Inside stories are told by two ex-presidents of Iran, Hashemi Rafsanjani and Mohammad Khatami, by two founders of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, and by leading westerners including Secretaries of State George Shultz, Warren Christopher and Madeleine Albright. In part three of this landmark series from Norma Percy and the team that made the multi-award winning documentaries The Death of Yugoslavia and Elusive Peace: Israel and the Arabs, contributors including Iran's President Khatami tell the inside story of the West's continuing nuclear confrontation with Iran. The film also shows a rare moment when they worked together. US State Department insiders tell how, after 9/11, Iran played a key role in helping America to topple the Taliban in Afghanistan - only for President Bush to put Iran into his 'axis of evil' immediately afterwards. Jack Straw, then foreign secretary, and President Khatami describe how Iran offered to help the US and its allies in their war against Saddam Hussein - help that, given Iran's powerful contacts in Iraq and the West's subsequent difficulties there, might have made a crucial difference. Jack Straw, his successor Margaret Beckett, and Joschka Fischer of Germany describe how they struggled to find a compromise between Iran and President Bush's hardliners over Iran's nuclear programme. John Sawers at the UN reveals an extraordinary secret deal that Iran proposed a few years later.

Iran nuclear talks: US Secretary of State John Kerry says important issues 'still unresolved'
  • Order:
  • Duration: 1:12
  • Updated: 08 Nov 2013
US Secretary of State John Kerry warns of significant differences between Iran and the six world powers trying to fashion a nuclear agreement, as he and three European foreign ministers add their weight to try to narrow the gap. Officials had expressed optimism about progress achieved in Thursday's full day of talks. The talks primarily focus on the size and output of Iran's enrichment programme, which can create both reactor fuel and weapons-grade material suitable for a nuclear bomb. Iran insists it is pursuing only nuclear energy, medical treatments and research, but the United States and its allies fear that Iran could turn this material into the fissile core of nuclear warheads. Mr Kerry said there were "some very important issues on the table that are unresolved." "There is not an agreement at this point in time," he told reporters. He planned to meet later with his European counterparts before joint talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, and Catherine Ashton, the EU's top diplomat convening the talks. In which John Green teaches you about Imperialism. In the late 19th century, the great powers of Europe were running around the world obtaining colonial possessions, especially in Africa and Asia. The United States, which as a young country was especially suceptible to peer pressure, followed along and snapped up some colonies of its own. The US saw that Spain's hold on its empire was weak, and like some kind of expansionist predator, it jumped into the Cuban War for Independence and turned it into the Spanish-Cuban-Phillipino-American War, which usually just gets called the Spanish-American War. Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) Hits Philippines "RAW FOOTAGE" Super Typhoon Haiyan With Wind Gust Up To 235 MPH Slams Philippines - Report MANILA, Philippines - Three people were killed before super typhoon "Yolanda" (international name Haiyan) made landfall over Eastern Visayas, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Friday afternoon. NDRRMC executive director Eduardo del Rosario said two of the victims died in separate incidents of electrocution in Masbate and Surigao del Sur provinces and the third was struck by lightning in Zamboanga City on Thursday. el Rosario also reported that a total of 687,000 people have been evacuated in Mimaropa, Bicol, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula and Caraga. He said the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) have stored food packs and non-food items for the evacuees in areas projected to be severely affected by "Yolanda," which is perceived as the strongest typhoon in the world this year. The NDRRMC chief also reported that five roads in Bicol, including a highway in Catanduanes, and Region 8 were impassable due to massive flooding. Meanwhile, Del Rosario said they have yet to establish communication lines with their people in Tacloban City and areas in Samar as the power was cut off at the height of the super typhoon. "Yung mga kasamahan po natin na may dalang satellite phones ay hindi malinaw ang communication due to the bad weather... We are exerting our efforts to establish communication," he said. The super typhoon hit land over Guiuan, Eastern Samar at around 4:40 a.m. It continues to cross the Visayas and is forecast to exit land by Friday night and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility during the weekend. NBC News Political Editor Once Website Fixed, Most Politicians Will Move on From Obamacare Fight

NBC News Senior Political Editor Mark Murray declared on Friday that the problems associated with the health insurance exchanges website are going to be fixed before December, according to federal estimates. He told MSNBC anchor Tamron Hall that, once the website has been fixed, most Democrats and even some Republicans will move on forever from arguing over the Affordable Care Act. Murray began by asserting that November 30 is the latest deadline by which point the government believes the health insurance exchanges will be operational online. He added that they will have to be because "all of the traffic was supposed to start coming in December." RELATED: 10 Senate Democrats Demand Obama Extend Obamacare Enrollment Period "If it actually is fixed by November 30, I don't think there's going to be much of a problem," Murray added. "We'll look back on this two or three years from now and see that this was just kind of a was a blip on the radar screen, much like the president's first debate with Mitt Romney where it was more of a historical footnote than something that actually ended up mattering." Murray added that, once the website is fixed, most Democrats and many Republicans will abandon the battle over the Affordable Care Act and cease fighting about an issue that has dominated public discourse for the last four years. "After fighting this battle for more than four years now, Tamron, if the websites are up and operational, I think you will end up hearing Democrats and maybe some Republicans saying let's move on to other issues and stop fighting the same fight we've been fighting for the last four and a half years," he concluded.
