Snow storm hits New York City region 2014
New York City public schools were closed on Friday as a snow storm brought heavy snow, strong winds and bitterly cold temperatures to the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) in New York issued winter storm warnings for the tristate area through Friday at 1 p.m. A blizzard warning is in effect for Long Island because blowing snow could cause white-out conditions. The winter storm warning is in effect for Connecticut, New Jersey and New York, including all of New York City. Significant snow, sleet, or ice is expected to accumulate and impact travel. A blizzard warning includes sustained or frequent winds of 35 mph or higher with considerable falling or blowing snow that reduces visibility to a 1/4 of a mile or less. These conditions are expected for a minimum of three hours, according to the NWS. Forecasters expected 10 or more inches of snow, winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph, temperatures in the single digits to teens, and visibility at times to be limited to one quarter to one half mile. Snow totals were piling up across the New York City metro area on Friday morning. In Bedford Park in the Bronx, 11.6 inches of snow were reported by 8 a.m. The Upper West Side of Manhattan had nearly 9 inches of snow. Central Park reported 6 inches by 7 a.m. South Ozone Park and Glendale in Queens reported more than 10 inches of snow. In Nassau County, several locations had more than 10 inches of snow by 9 a.m., including Oceanside, Massapequa and Plainview. Western Long Island had higher totals, reaching a food in North Babylon and just smaller amounts reported in Bay Shore and Eastport. Upstate, Monroe, in Orange County reported 8.1 inches of snow overnight. Westchester locations had amounts under 10 inches by 8 a.m. In New Jersey, Paramus had 9 inches of snow by 7 a.m. Bloomingdale in Passaic County had 7.8 inches reported by 7 a.m. In Connecticut, Guilford in New Haven County had 9 inches of snow by 7 a.m. Darien, in Fairfield County had 7 inches by 5 a.m. Further south, in Elizabeth, there was 6 inches on the ground by 8 a.m. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SNOW TOTALS NJ Transit is cross-honoring tickets among all modes of transportation through the end of service on Friday which will allow customers to use their ticket or pass on alternate travel modes - rail, light rail or bus system wide. It's rail system was operating on an enhanced weekend schedule -- (MLK and President's Day schedules)-- due to the severe weather. The New York City Department of Sanitation issued a snow alert citywide that began at 1 a.m. on Thursday. Emergency shelters in Nassau County opened at 8 p.m. Thursday. The three shelters are located at Glen Cove Senior Center, 130 Glen Street, Glen Cove; McKenna Elementary School, 210 Spruce Street, Massapequa Park; and Paul Schreiber High School, 101 Campus Drive, Port Washington. N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a statewide state of emergency and encouraged drivers to utilize mass transit as because of closures of major highways across the state including. The New York State Thruway I-87 south of Albany, Interstate 84, and the Long Island Expressway in Nassau and Suffolk counties closed at midnight and didn't reopen until 8 a.m. on Friday. N.J. Gov. Chris Christie also declared a state of emergency and told drivers to get off the road. "I ask all New Jerseyans to stay off the roads if possible so that first responders can safely respond to any emergency situations," he Tweeted. Conn. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is urging residents to take it slow and avoid travel during the height of the storm Thursday night and has directed the Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS), the Department of Social Services (DSS) and the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) to coordinate with 2-1-1 and Connecticut's network of shelters to ensure that the state's most vulnerable people are protected from the severe cold weather.- published: 03 Jan 2014

New York New York Travel — Top Attractions And Places To Visit
Subscribe → http://bit.ly/SubscribeWTV Facebook → http://bit.ly/FacebookWTV Twitter → http://bit.ly/TwitterWTV New York City is an enormous city. Each of its five boroughs is the equivalent of a large city in its own right and may itself be divided into districts. These borough and district articles contain sightseeing, restaurant, nightlife and accommodation listings — consider printing them all. New York City (also referred to as "New York", "NYC", "The Big Apple", or just "The City" by locals), is the most populous city in the United States. It lies at the mouth of the Hudson River in the southernmost part of the state, which is part of the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. The city spans a land area of 305 square miles (790 km²). New York City has a population of approximately 8.2 million people. The New York Metropolitan Area, which spans lower New York, northern New Jersey, and southwestern Connecticut, has a population of 18.7 million, making it the largest metropolitan area in the U.S. As of 2007, it was 5th largest in the world, after Tokyo, São Paulo, Mexico City and Seoul. New York City is a center for media, culture, food, fashion, art, research, finance, and trade. It has one of the largest and most famous skylines on earth, dominated by the iconic Empire State Building. Although the city may present itself as rather straightforward -- especially when one navigates the relentless stripes of perpendicular gridiron -- New York is infinitely complex; it's intricate parts twisting in tandem like the cogs of a clock. This feels particularly fitting in a place that has its own standards for telling time. Sand passes through the hourglass much faster here -- change is constantly afoot, as locals hunt down the latest and greatest with alacrity only to shift gears the following week in search of the next big hit. So it really doesn't matter when you visit -- today, tomorrow, or in a year's time -- New York will always be ahead of the curve. The Big Apple is, more than anything else, a wildly diverse urban ecosystem, and there's no better way to access the city's cornucopia of cultures than through the dinner plate. NYC's eating scene is a parade of superlatives culminating in a constellation of Michelin stars. From the Caribbean kitchens in Harlem to modern iterations of new American comfort cuisine downtown, New York offers endless opportunities to stamp your palate's passport. New York City: "A Day in New York" 1963 Francis Thompson
more at http://news.quickfound.net/cities/new_york_city.html "Art" film, with lots of warped images and avant garde music. "City Symphony with abstractions of NY." Public domain film from the Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City New York is the most populous city in the United States and the center of the New York Metropolitan Area, one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. The city is referred to as New York City or the City of New York to distinguish it from the State of New York, of which it is a part. A global power city, New York exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural capital of the world. Located on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a county of New York State. The five boroughs—The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island—were consolidated into a single city in 1898. With a census-estimated 2012 population of 8,336,697 distributed over a land area of just 302.64 square miles (783.8 km2), New York is the most densely populated major city in the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York,[20] making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world. The New York City Metropolitan Area's population is the United States' largest, with 18.9 million people distributed over 6,720 square miles (17,400 km2), and is also part of the most populous combined statistical area in the United States, containing 22.2 million people as of 2011. New York traces its roots to its 1624 founding as a trading post by colonists of the Dutch Republic and was named New Amsterdam in 1626. The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664 and were renamed New York after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York. New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. It has been the country's largest city since 1790. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to America by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is a globally recognized symbol of the United States and its democracy. Many districts and landmarks in New York City have become well known to its approximately 50 million annual visitors. Times Square, iconified as "The Crossroads of the World", is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway theatre district, one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections, and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. The names of many of the city's bridges, skyscrapers, and parks are known around the world. New York City's financial district, anchored by Wall Street in Lower Manhattan, has been called the world's leading financial center and is home to the New York Stock Exchange, the world's largest stock exchange by total market capitalization of its listed companies. Manhattan's real estate market is among the most expensive in the world. Manhattan's Chinatown incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere. Providing continuous 24/7 service, the New York City Subway is one of the most extensive rapid transit systems worldwide. Numerous colleges and universities are located in New York, including Columbia University, New York University, and Rockefeller University, which have been ranked amongst the top 35 in the world...- published: 21 Sep 2013
