Idle No More movement protests at
Eaton Centre
"The group converged on the
Centre Court fountain at 2pm. Demonstrators moved up through the mall, holding banners over the fountain from 4 floors up.The group drummed, clapped & chanted "
Meet Chief Spence".
Similar demonstrations have been taking place across
Canada & in the US in recent weeks. On
December 21st, about
1000 Idle No More demonstrators closed the intersection of Yonge & Dundas.
The Idle No More movement was born out opposition to the federal budget bill & it's possible impact on
Aboriginal communities.
The bill removed federal oversight over waterways without consulting aboriginal groups who depend on them for water & food.
Theresa Spence, Chief of the
Attawapiskat reserve is on day 19 of a hunger strike. She has vowed to continue it until she gets a meeting with
Prime Minister Harper to discuss treaty issues." source: http://www.newstalk1010.com/

IDLE NO MORE RALLIES HAVE SPREAD TO EGYPT, OTTAWA, TORONTO, MONTREAL, QUEBEC,
LONDON,
UNITED KINGDOM,
LOS ANGELES, -BRITISH COLUMBIA, SASKATCHEWAN, EDMONTON, WINNIPEG, SUDBURY, YUKON, OWEN SOUND,
SAN FRANCISCO, HAMILTON, VANCOUVER AND MORE!
Idle No More is the most significant social movement of 2012. Idle No More was started by four aboriginal
Saskatchewan women who are angry that the
Harper government failed to consult with aboriginal leaders before amending and passing legislation that directly impacts aboriginal treaty rights and
Canada's protected waterways. Idle No More calls on all people to join them in solidarity which honors and fulfills
Indigenous sovereignty which protects the land and water.
Colonization continues through attacks to
Indigenous rights and damage to the land and water. We must repair these violations, live the spirit and intent of the treaty relationship, work towards justice in action, and protect
Mother Earth. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/winter-fails-to-slow-idle-no-mores-momentum/article6699001/
