The Cape Floral Kingdom, the smallest and richest plant kingdom on Earth, is home to more than 10 000 plant species and is also the region where approximately 90% of the country’s wine is produced. This biodiversity hotspot has been increasingly threatened by vineyard expansion, urban development and invasive alien species. The WWF Biodiversity Wine Initiative (BWI) accredits environmentally responsible wine producers who make a significant contribution to the environment by setting aside natural areas for long-term conservation, whilst implementing sound environmental management practices within their vineyards and cellars. BWI is now a pioneering model for biodiversity best practice and sustainable agriculture in the wine industry globally, replicated in countries like Chile and California. Since 2004, over 198 wine producers have changed to more sustainable farming practices and become members of the WWF BWI, resulting in over 130 000 hectares of land under conservation.
