Grafton club's rewards in awards

Fairfax Media writer

Tony White The Clarence River Jockey Club (Grafton) has won two major awards at the Clarence Valley Business Excellence Awards. The club was the winner of the Hospitality, Tourism, Events & Entertainment category and of the Clarence Valley Excellent Business Award. The awards cap a big turnaround for the club a year after the appointment of experienced racing administrator Michael Beattie as chief executive and a successful July racing carnival. ''I have got to say, personally, because it's my first year with the club, I am a little humbled by the awards,'' Beattie said. ''I am absolutely rapt with what we have achieved; the whole focus of the organisation this year was to really re-engage Grafton in terms of the July racing carnival. Firstly, we had to put on high-quality racing and we did that, but then we had to make the racing experience more enjoyable for everyone.''
