Lochalsh is a district of mainland Scotland that is currently part of the Highland council area. It is a hilly peninsula that lies between Loch Carron and Loch Alsh. The main settlement is Kyle of Lochalsh, located at the entrance to Loch Alsh, opposite the village of Kyleakin on the adjacent island of Skye. A ferry used to connect the two settlements but was replaced by the Skye Bridge in 1995.
The earliest known inhabitants were Picts, but in the late 6th century Loch Alsh became part of the Gaelic island kingdom of Dál Riata. Between the 8th and 13th centuries the area was disputed between the kingdoms of Norway and Alba and often ruled by independent lords. Although nominally subject to the Kingdom of Scotland after 1266 AD, the history of the region until the failed rebellion of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745 is one of obscure struggles between the local clans and against the central government.
To prevent further feuds and rebellions, in 1746 the government enacted laws designed to break the bond between the clan leaders and their people. An indirect result was gradual conversion of the land from crofting to more profitable and less labour-intensive sheep farming. These Highland Clearances and the subsequent Highland Potato Famine of 1846–52 forced many of the people to emigrate. Today, the area is thinly populated with an economy based mainly on tourism.

On-board the 13:33 from Inverness on Wednesday 18th June 2014 It was my first trip down the route towards Kyle Of Lochalsh, so after Dingwall was completely new scenery. So for those of you who haven't been down to Kyle I decided I'd try and film as much of it as possible and upload it. I tried to include all the stops however some are missed because they were request stops and platforms were on the other side. (Many stops along the route are stop to request stations) In terms of traffic or speed its by no means the most internesting line, but the scenery is worth the almost 3 hour journey between Inverness & Kyle alone. Incredible scenery and stunning views the entire way as you...
Three hours and fourty minutes worth of train journey through fantastic scenery, crammed into around six minutes! This was early Summer (May) 2008, on a train packed with tourists (myself included). It was not possible to have a bay to myself, so I had to share one with the nice gentleman opposite, whom you can see in the reflection in the window :-) Im not a proffesional camera person, as you will see, but never the lessI am sure you will be able to appreciate the spectacular view, as I did. The train was the usual staple diet of a two car class 158 DMU. Sadly, gone are the days of loco hauled trains with observation cars :-( !! ENJOY !!
Video taken on two successive Wednesdays on the Inverness - Kyle of Lochalsh line - 18th & 25th August 1993. The primary aim was to lineside and travel on the 12:35 from Inverness and the 17:05 return from Kyle of Lochalsh, which was supposed to be the celebrity pair of 26s, 007 [D5300] & 001 [D5301]. On the 18th August I arrived at Kyle by road and observed 37232 arrive and carry out some shunting, then drove to Plockton to view the 26s pass there, followed by 37232 heading back to Inverness. In the evening, the 26s are seen at Dingwall crossing 37402 on their return to Inverness. In the evening at Inverness, lines of stored locos are seen [if anyone can tell me which ones they might be, it would be nice], along with 37428 moving on to the fuel point, followed by the 26s shunting the s...
