Dr Michael Shermer | The God Debate | Oxford Union
Dr Michael Shermer gives his arguement against the existance of God. Facebook @ fb.me Twitter @ www.twitter.com Oxford Union Website @ www.oxford-union.org Dr Michael Shermer begins by saying that 84% of the world's population believe in some kind of organised religion and how do those who believe in a particular religion know that they have chosen the right one and everyone else has got it wrong? He proceeds to explain two pieces of evidence that proves that humans made up God and religion and not the other way around. He starts with evolutionary theory saying that we are all descendants from cautious creatures who creator false positive rather than false negatives. The creation of an agency (an omnipotent being) within a religion is a powerful force of social control. Then the second line of evidence is the what ever social environment were born into we would be exposed to the dominant religion in that environment ie India -- Hinduism, Europe -- Christianity. Filmed on Thursday 8th November 2012 ABOUT Dr MICHAEL SHERMER: Author and Founder of the Skeptics Society. ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 189 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

PSA: Why 9 year olds shouldn't play Team Fortress 2
...or any game with voice chat for that matter. If I didn't have FRAPS running, I wouldn't have stayed in the server for as long as I did. Attention Parents, buy your kids LEGOs, GI Joe or something. I realize that it is important to immerse your child in the social environment of the internet, but not before age 13. If you really feel the need to let them play, be sure to do it with careful monitoring. I have run into 5 year olds playing Team Fortress 2 and they were perfectly decent and courteous players. This is because their mom or dad was in the room with them, letting their kid play on their Steam account. However, something like this 9 year old should not happen. If you have a kid who is playing an M rated game, and they aren't even 13, be sure to check in on what they're playing, and possibly stop them before it's too late. I understand that you may feel that the violence and language in-game is arbitrary and it's fine for them, but you rarely consider how it effects us, the people your child plays with. We rarely want to play with anyone who is too young to comprehend the game's strategy and common gaming etiquette. Keep them off of Steam and Xbox Live. Now on the case of swearing: I am not entirely against swearing. Hell, I'll drop a few f-bombs here and there when I'm in-game, mostly in a joking manner. But if you're calling your opponent a "bitch" at every turn, that's really unnecessary and obnoxious.

Greasy Palms: The Impact of Indonesia's Palm Oil Plantations
Indonesia is a country of incredible beauty. As one of the more biodiverse regions on our planets, its role in the environmental future of our globe is paramount. With the increasing demand for cheap biofuels to lessen the global north's dependency on foreign petroleum, palm oil plantations have taken precedence over much of Indonesia's last remaining rainforests- the only refuge for critically endangered species, such as the orangutan, who shares 96.4% of our genes. This project concerns the social, environmental, and economic impacts of palm oil production in Indonesia, including the loss of over 2.8 million hectares of primary rainforest each year. A common ingredient in thousands of products, from anti-freeze to shampoo to potato chips, palm oil comprises an integral part of Indonesia's economy. However, its resulting impacts on local communities, including conflicts over human rights, land rights, and environmental protection, are little known. Informed by the work of local non-profit organizations like Sawit Watch, Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari, WALHI- Friends of the Earth Indonesia, Pan Eco, Leuser International Foundation, Fauna and Flora International, the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme, and the Sumatran Orangutan Society, this project is building tools to educate global consumers, enabling them to realize the effects of palm oil consumption, and also how they can be part of a more sustainable solution. A documentary film is currently in its final stages ...

Greyhoundz - Pigface
It was during the late 90's when pop culture dominated the social environment. From fashion to slander, food to music, it was all mainstreamed as influenced by foreign trends. For the music scene, most bands played Top 40 hits and "similar-sounding" originals. It was simply stereotypical. As the decade came to an end, the whole Philippine music scene was blown away with one demo recording catching airplay in a radio station — it was NU107's In The Raw program where they feature new and unsigned bands. "PIGFACE" was the title of the single and "GREYHOUNDZ" was the name of the artist. Brave, bold and aggressive, is the best way to describe both the song and artist. Everyone who had taste was shocked and amazed on how to define what they had just heard. It was the first time in Philippine airwaves that this "type" of music was played. The audience's acceptance was incredible, and the sound was acknowledged as a new alternative.

Bhutan, Gross National Happiness and Sustainable Development (fascinating!)
Bhutan, a small country enshrined in the Himalaya's leads the way in the pursuit of holistic, inclusive and truly environmentally sustainable development. This commitment emanates from the visionary statement in the early 1970s, of His Majesty, the Fourth King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who said that Gross National Happiness was more important than the Gross National Product. This Sustainable Development philosophy has its roots in the Buddhist belief that there is more to life than material development. According to beliefs, true development happens when spiritual, social, environmental, and economic developments occur in harmony with each other. Since then all policies and laws in Bhutan need to be in line with the four pillars of Gross National Happiness, which are: Equitable socio-economic development, Preservation of culture, Conservation of the environment, and Good governance. This has become Bhutan's central development philosophy, and has made the country a champion in the pursuit of Sustainable Development. The joint UNDP-UNEP Poverty-Environment Initiative, PEI, is supporting the Royal Government of Bhutan's efforts in ensuring this greening effort is reflected in its development plans, programmes and budgets. In 2010, a Joint Support Programme with the Gross National Happiness Commission as the lead agency was implemented to enhance capacity of central and local government functionaries and officials including CSOs/NGOs to make sure that any ...

The Environment and Economy In Conflict
In his new book, The Bridge at the Edge of the World: Capitalism, the Environment, and Crossing from Crisis to Sustainability, Dean Gus Speth asserts that today's environmental reality is linked powerfully with growing social inequality and the neglect and erosion of democratic governance and popular control. Speth examines how these seemingly separate areas of public concern are intertwined and calls upon citizens to mobilize spiritual and political resources for change.

Helping Consumers Buy Products that Reflect their Values; How Google's Mobile...
Google Tech Talks February, 8 2008 ABSTRACT Internet searching and advertising increasingly plays a role in consumer decisions and purchases, yet pertinent information for making value-judgments is currently awkward to ferret out and certainly not universally accessible or useful. There is rarely a feedback loop aligning vendor or manufacturer's environmental, social or governance policies with a shopper's values, so shoppers, over time, rarely cause industries to change their behavior. There needs to be a way for shoppers to aim their purchasing power at achieving social values of highest regional priority. There needs to be a way to accumulate and redeem "social values rewards". What's missing is timely and impactful analysis of a candidate purchases' impact on the Shopper's family, region and planet (expressed according to their values), so that the purchaser can more easily make informed purchasing decisions. With some modifications to Google ads and Google product search, Google could solidify the feedback loop and help consumers, by their actions, build a greener and better world. The Power Of Group Meditation On The Environment
This clip deals with the subject of the possibility of a shared connected consciousness and the power of group meditation on the environment. Can focused group meditation decrease crime rates and even turn off war? Can inner peace become outer peace? Social scientific experiments are showing that it is possible. Intro by Bruce Lipton and Gregg Braden followed by statistical analysis from John Hagelin Ph.D from the experiment and ending with Bill Hicks. "The "field" (invisible energy forces surrounding us) is the sole governing agency of the particle." ~ Albert Einstein "Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream and we are the imagination of ourselves." ~Bill Hicks "Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use."

World Environment Day: Bali Fishermen
Fishermen in the community of Les, in Bali, used poison cyanide to stun and catch the ornamental fish that supplied their livelihood. But, after 15 years of this environmentally damaging practice, the local coral reef was left severely bleached. Arsana, a fisherman from Bali. UNDP and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the Small Grants Programme, by working with local partners and the people of Les developed joint solutions to rehabilitate the coral reef ecosystem in a way that would allow locals to carry on with their traditional life and fishing. In partnership with local non-governmental organizations Yayasan Bahtera Nusantara and Telapak, villagers were taught how to preserve the coral reef. Twelve community organizers taught their fellow fishermen how to catch ornamental fish without using the cyanide, by using nets. Another 100 men, women and children were trained in simple coral transplantation and biological monitoring. They transplanted 34 species of coral from donor coral into a new reef created from rubble and porous cement. After four years, the coral reef coverage increased from 23 per cent to 40 per cent. The UNDP and the GEF Small Grants Programme also helped its local partner-grantees to establish a community-owned trading company. The fishermen and traders in the company were trained in fish handling and packaging, and were able to obtain trading and transportation permits to export ornamental fish. The company then started selling its products ...
