Winchelsea
Today, Winchelsea sits quietly on its hill, gazing across marshland at the now-distant sea, but all around the village are the evocative remnants of past glory: the Church of St Thomas the Martyr; three medieval gates standing guard against long-departed foes; and beneath the broad streets, the hidden wine cellars of the old port town. The sense of tranquility Winchelsea enjoys, owes much to the surrounding landscape of the High Weald, it is a place of green valleys, wooded hills, open grazing marshes, coastal views and winding rivers. After the Norman Conquest, Winchelsea was of great importance in cross-Channel trade (acting in particular as an entrepôt for London) and as a naval base. In the 13th century, it became famous in the wine trade from Gascony. Winchelsea has endured over 700 turbulent years of history. 'Old Winchelsea' was claimed by the sea after the savage storm of 1287 and the new town (present day Winchelsea) was built on Iham Hill under the royal patronage of Edward I. It was favoured as one of the cinque ports where the English fleet under the King's command would gather for royal duties or military action. With the mouth of the River Brede lapping at the foot of the hill, a harbour was built and Winchelsea grew swiftly on timber exports and wine imports in the 14th century, as well as on fishing, smuggling and piracy. For a time the town thrived, but misfortune was soon to plague the residents again: in 1348 the Black Death arrived and many lives were ...

Winchelsea level crossing
Saturday October 15 2011 at 11.50 am. The rather noisy 10.32 Brighton to Ashford (12.18) diesel train pulls into and out of Winchelsea station and through its ungated level crossing. This is a single track line. Trains stop at the station every 2 hours each way and slow to 20 mph on the other hour because that is the speed limit over ungated crossings. There was a crash here in 2008 and gates are due to be fitted in 2013. In 2009/10 less than 3 people a day used this station. Dumb Womans Lane is north of the crossing.

Kick the Frenchman's Head (a game played in Winchelsea every Boxing Day)
peplers.blogspot.com Every Boxing Day this game is played at Winchelsea. There are no rules! Three teams play, and they have to try and get the 'Frenchman's head' (actually a bag of cloths) into a goal (a metal bin). The game's been played in one form or another for hundreds of years, as you can read about on the town website (link above). Oh, and by the way, people in Winchelsea are perfectly friendly towards the French! The name of the game comes from hundreds of years ago when the French frequently raided the town, even burning it to the ground at one point.

History Comes Alive BARWON PARK Winchelsea. April 2011.
This montage has been put together using all the photos I could grab from everyone at the event: History Comes Alive! @ Barwon Park Mansion, Winchelsea, Victoria. Hosted by the Geelong Military Reenactment Group and the Victorian National Trust this event brought up to 80 reenactors, collectors, living historians, vehicle historians from all over Australia for this public event held every two years. All of the photos used in this montage are from that weekend in April, none are from WW1 or WW2. A memorable moment by far for all involved. I wish to thank those who unknowingly donated their photos for this montage, please be assured it was to just share with the rest of the community. I thank you in advance. Blitzcraig.
