Republic of Guyana is a sovereign state on the northern coast of South America. Although Guyana is part of the Anglophone Caribbean, it is one of the few Caribbean countries that is not an island.[citation needed] The Caribbean Community (CARICOM), of which Guyana is a member, has its secretariat's headquarters in Guyana's capital, Georgetown. Guyana was originally colonised by the Netherlands. Later, it became a British colony, known as British Guiana, and remained so for over 200 years until it achieved independence on 26 May 1966 from the United Kingdom. Suriname is not as yet a highly seasoned tourism destination, such as those one can find in the wider Caribbean. Most visitors who travel from abroad to our country have close relatives living here, or were born in Suriname. However this trend has changed, rapidly during the last two decades. According to statistical data provided by the Suriname Tourism Foundation, overall tourist arrivals over the past years noted a significant increase from 60,000 visitors in 2002 to more than 150,000 visitors in 2006 and 175.000 in 2009. The number increased even more in 2010, when 205,001 visitors were registered. More and more focused initiatives have been taken to improve the tourism sector while high standards of professionalism were introduced. For example, owners of warungs, the cozy small typical Indonesian food stands along the East West road, took a French language course so as to better communicate with their clients from French Guyana and offer them better service. Moreover, tour guides are trained in wildlife knowledge, in order to be able to point out various species of flora and fauna to the people under their guidance. As regards accommodation, at present the number of apartments and small hotels is 253; there is a wide range of possibilities, varying from basic and adventurous to very comfortable. Tourists don't have to bathe in the river or sleep in a hammock if they do not want to. There are choices now -- hot waters, water closets, comfortable beds.

A few months ago the Government of Guyana embarked on a 1billion dollar 'Clean Up My Country' campaign. There were serious questions raised even before the project got off the ground about how the money was to be spent and the strong chance it was another political gimmick conceived to siphon even more state resources. Never mind what I think, see for yourself and make up your own mind as to whether the campaign was a success as the camera starts rolling again for 2015. This video touches on so many issues it's difficult to list them all but observe something that speaks to our fundamental issue in Guyana; there are laws...but those laws are not consistently enforced if at all. There are laws governing disposal of waste and preserving the sanctity of our environment but no one enforcing them. There are laws and regulations regarding how the transportation system is supposed to operate, prohibiting music in the buses, blocking off the front and loading from the rear, profanity, verbal abuse, harassment... but again the enforcement mechanism is woefully deficient. See for yourself what's going on.

Guyana (i/ɡaɪˈænə/ gy-AN-ə), officially the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, previously the colony of British Guiana, is a sovereign state on the northern coast of South America that is culturally part of the Anglophone Caribbean. Guyana was a former colony of the Dutch and (for over 200 years) the British. It is the only state of the Commonwealth of Nations on mainland South America, and the only one on that continent where English is an official language. It is one of the few Caribbean countries that is not an island. It is also a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which has its secretariat headquarters in Guyana's capital, Georgetown. Guyana achieved independence from the United Kingdom on 26 May 1966, and became a republic on 23 February 1970. In 2008 the country joined the Union of South American Nations as a founding member.
Historically, the region known as "Guiana" or "Guyana" comprised the large shield landmass north of the Amazon River and east of the Orinoco River known as the "Land of many waters". Historical Guyana is made up of three Dutch colonies: Essequibo, Demerara, and Berbice. Modern Guyana is bordered to the east by Suriname, to the south and southwest by Brazil, to the west by Venezuela, and on the north by the Atlantic Ocean.
