Ron Korb & Hiroki Sakaguchi Album: Japanese Mysteries Ron Korb is versed in different Japanese flutes (bamboo flute, shinobue, misatobue, ryuteki) as well as Western flute. The pieces were written by Korb and Hiroki Sakaguchi (keyboardist on the CD), except for arrangements of two Japanese traditional songs. Other contributors to the album are Senzan Tani and Yoko Tanaka, and the instruments used include the shakuhachi, koto, shamisen, taiko, guitars, synthesizers, and percussion. The pieces evoke themes of Japanese history ("The Story of Heike," "The Tale of Genji"), landmarks ("The Todaiji Temple"), or spirit ("Winter Night," "Autumn Rain"), yet most of them are also reminiscent of Western semi-classical types of pieces, as can be found among many Japanese composers. ~ Bruno Deschênes, Rovi
Dare I say it, no visit to Japan is complete without a visit to the ancient capital city of NARA. The biggest attraction in NARA, both literally and figuratively is Todaiji Temple home of the Big Buddha. A place of pilgrimage for Buddhists and an awe inspiring site for tourists. The entire scene is captivating thanks partly to the sacred Sika deer that roam around Nara Park. To the east of is Nigatsu - do Temple from where one has a panoramic view of Nara. The Tea House nearby is of interest because it is a traditional Japanese tea house.

Nara is a great place to visit when you're in Japan. It's close to Osaka and Kyoto, and great for a day trip. Besides the many friendly deer in the area, there is Todaji Temple. The site is thousands of years old and where Buddhism in Japan started. The current building was complete in 1702 after previous buildings were destroyed in fires. There are 3 large buddha statues inside. The tallest is about 15m or 50ft. Definitely come here when you're in Nara! Subscribe for more videos from Japan! Vatican City (Listeni/ˈvætɨkən ˈsɪti/), officially Vatican City State (Italian: Stato della Città del Vaticano;[d] pronounced [ˈstaːto della t͡ʃitˈta (d)del vatiˈkaːno]) is a walled enclave within the city of Rome. With an area of approximately 44 hectares (110 acres), and a population of 842,[3] it is the smallest internationally recognized independent state in the world by both area and population. It is an ecclesiastical[3] or sacerdotal-monarchical[7] state ruled by the Bishop of Rome—the Pope. The highest state functionaries are all Catholic clergy of various national origins. Since the return of the Popes from Avignon in 1377, they have generally resided at the Apostolic Palace within what is now Vatican City, although at times residing instead in the Quirinal Palace in Rome or elsewhere. Vatican City is distinct from the Holy See (Latin: Sancta Sedes),[e] which dates back to early Christianity and is the main episcopal see of 1.2 billion Latin and Eastern Catholic adherents around the globe. The independent city-state, on the other hand, came into existence in 1929 by the Lateran Treaty between the Holy See and Italy, which spoke of it as a new creation,[8] not as a vestige of the much larger Papal States (756–1870), which had previously encompassed much of central Italy. According to the terms of the treaty, the Holy See has "full ownership, exclusive dominion, and sovereign authority and jurisdiction" over the city-state. #3: Discovery of the “Pure Land” This episode looks at the Kamakura Period of Japanese history (12th-14th centuries) and the ways Buddhism of the time influenced so much of the art of the period, particularly statues of Buddha, statues of prominent monks, painted scenes reflecting Buddhist beliefs, and a new kind of portrait painting that emerged during that period. Temples in Japan that are visited include: Todaiji, Jingoji, Higashi Honganji and Sanjusangendo, with its rows of statues of Kannon. Monks referenced include Chogen, Zendo Daishi, Ikkyu Sojun and Shinran. We see contemporary artists at work, including Shiko Munakata, a woodblock artist. Shuichi Kato comments from time to time and points out the influence of Japanese monk portraits on a much later school of European artists, most notably Vincent Van Gogh. Ashley Thom provides the English narration. Akira Mitake composed the music. This series is an NHK production from 1989.

Japan Travel: Todaiji Temple Nandaimon & Japan's largest Daibutsu, Nara38 Todaiji Temple, or "Great Eastern Temple," is one of Japan's most famous and historically important temples and a landmark of Nara. The temple was constructed in 752 as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples of Japan and grew very powerful, causing the capital to be moved from Nara to Nagaoka in 784 in an attempt to reduce the temple's influence on government affairs. Todaiji's main hall is the Daibutsuden (Big Buddha Hall), which is the world's largest wooden building, despite the fact that the size of the present structure reconstructed in 1692 is only two thirds of the original temple hall. The massive building contains one of Japan's largest bronze Buddha statues (Daibutsu). The 15 meters tall, seated Buddha represents Vairocana and is flanked by two Bodhisattvas. Also, on displays in the Daibutsuden Hall are several smaller Buddhist statues and models of the former and current buildings. There is a pillar with a hole in its base, which is another attraction, the same size as the Daibutsu's nostril. It is said that those who can squeeze through this opening will be granted enlightenment in their next life. Along the approach to Todaiji, there stands the Nandaimon Gate, a large wooden gate which two fierce looking statues watch over. It represents the Nio Guardian Kings, and these statues are designated national treasures as well as the gate itself. Some deer may be found in the temple coming from the adjacent Nara Park, begging for shika senbei, special crackers for deer that can be purchased for around 150 yen. Japan Trip: Omizutori giant torches overwhelming Horyuji, Todaiji, Nara33 Omizutori (literally "Water Ceremony") , which is officially Shunie (literally "Second-Month Service") , has become the popular name of the ceremony. It is a series of events held annually from March 1 to 14 at Todaiji Temple. This collection of Buddhist repentance rituals has been held every year for over 1250 years without any break, making it one of the oldest reoccurring Buddhist events in Japan. The site of Omizutori is Nigatsudo Hall, a sub complex of Todaiji, standing not far from the temple's main hall on the slope of a hill. Nigatsudo literally means "second month hall", which is based on the lunar calendar, when Omizutori has traditionally been held. The second month of the lunar calendar roughly coincide with March of the solar calendar. Among the many different events held during Omizutori, Otaimatsu (literally "Fire Ceremony") is the most well-known and spectacular. Just after the sun goes down on every night from March 1 through 14, giant torches, ranging from six to eight meters in length, are carried up to Nigatsudo's balcony and held over the crowd down below. The burning embers, that shower down from the balcony, are believed to bestow the onlookers with a good luck for the year. The size of the torches and the duration of Otaimatsu vary from day to day. Typically, ten medium sized torches are brought up to and carried across the balcony one after the other every day. The entire event lasts about twenty minutes, while the audience stands in the courtyard below the wooden temple hall, being showered by the burning embers. The Hindu 2015-04-07Tōdai-ji (東大寺, Tōdai-ji?, Eastern Great Temple), is a Buddhist temple complex located in the city of Nara, Japan. Sika deer, regarded as messengers of the gods in the Shinto religion, roam the grounds freely.
The beginning of building a temple where the huge Tōdai-ji complex sits today can be dated to 728, when Emperor Shōmu established Kinshōsen-ji (金鐘山寺) as an appeasement for Prince Motoi, his first son with his Fujiwara clan consort Kōmyōshi. Prince Motoi died a year after his birth.
During the Tenpyō era, Japan suffered from a series of disasters and epidemics. It was after experiencing these problems that Emperor Shōmu issued an edict in 741 to promote the construction of provincial temples throughout the nation. Tōdai-ji (still Kinshōsen-ji at the time) was appointed as the Provincial temple of Yamato Province and the head of all the provincial temples. With the alleged coup d'état by Nagaya in 729, an outbreak of smallpox around 735–737, worsened by consecutive years of poor crops, then followed by a rebellion led by Fujiwara no Hirotsugu in 740, the country was in a chaotic position. Emperor Shōmu had been forced to move the capital four times, indicating the level of instability during this period.
