Tank Battles - El Alamein to the Volga Part 2 of 6
A documentary that covers the important role that the armoured divisions played during World War II including looks at the tanks themselves, the crucial battles and the commanders who led them.A documentary which details the battle between the Panzer and the T-34 tank. Includes Operation Citadel, which saw Hitler suffer a major defeat against the might of the Soviet machine during the Second World War. I found this quite interesting for those into Tank Battles.

Battle of El Alamein | Greatest Tank Battles | Military Channel Documentary
Visit: military.discovery.com First Battle of El Alamein From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The First Battle of El Alamein (1--27 July 1942) was a battle of the Western Desert Campaign of the Second World War, fought between Axis forces (Germany and Italy) of the Panzer Army Africa (Panzerarmee Afrika) commanded by Field Marshal (Generalfeldmarschall) Erwin Rommel, and Allied (specifically, British Imperial) forces (Britain, British India, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand) of the British Eighth Army commanded by General Claude Auchinleck. The battle halted the second (and final) advance by the Axis forces into Egypt, El Alamein being only 66 mi (106 km) from Alexandria. Second Battle of El Alamein From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Second Battle of El Alamein marked a major turning point in the Western Desert Campaign of the Second World War. The battle took place over 13 days from 23 October -- 4 November 1942. The First Battle of El Alamein had stalled the Axis advance. Thereafter, Lieutenant-General Bernard Montgomery took command of the British Eighth Army from General Claude Auchinleck in August 1942. The Allied victory turned the tide in the North African Campaign. It ended Axis hopes of occupying Egypt, taking control of the Suez Canal, and gaining access to the Middle Eastern oil fields.

The battle of El Alamein.
In 1942 things were not going well for the British and Commonwealth forces in north Africa. In early August Winston Churchill replaced General Auchinleck as C-in-C Middle East with General Sir Harold Alexander. Lieutenant-General Gott was to take command of Eighth Army but was killed soon after being chosen, when the transport plane he was travelling in was shot down so Lieutenant-General Bernard Montgomery became Eighth Army commander. At the end of August Rommel attacked the El Alamein defensive line and was stopped at Alam el Halfa ridge. After six weeks of building up his forces in which the 8th army received 300 Sherman tanks Montgomery attacked with 220000 men and 1100 tanks against 115000 men and 559 tanks of Rommel's forces. A number of these tanks were poor Italian tanks which could not match the new Sherman's. The battle started on October 23with over 800 artillery guns firing at the German and Italian lines. by November 2nd 1942, Rommel knew that he was beaten. Hitler ordered the Afrika Korps to fight to the last but Rommel refused to carry out this order. On November 4th, Rommel started his retreat. 25000 Germans and Italians had been killed or wounded in the battle and 13000 Allied troops in the Eighth Army. MEN OF WAR (PC): Elite Italian "Ariete" Division - Last Stand at El Alamein 1942
The "Ariete" Armoured Division was an armoured division of the Italian Army during World War II. It was formed in 1939 as the second armoured division in the Italian Army after the 131 Armoured Division Centauro. The division fought in the North African Campaign until being destroyed during the Second Battle of El Alamein. (The Ariete Armoured Division hero Second Lieutenant Luigi Arbib Pascucci led the remaining tanks in a counterattack against the advancing British armour at Fuka, allowing the German Afrika Korps to escape. Luigi was found dead in his burned-out tank after the counterattack, with the rest of the Ariete Division tanks destroyed. His sacrifice earned him the Gold Medal of Military Valor, Italy's highest military award.) During the Second Battle of El Alamein the "Ariete" sacrificed its tanks in the attempt to counter the Allied offensive and cover the withdrawal of the German army. On 4 November at about 15:30, the few surviving tanks, surrounded by an overwhelmingly superior enemy, broadcast their last message. "Enemy tanks broke through South of Ariete Division. Ariete thus surrounded, located 5 kilometers north east of Bir-el-Abd. Ariete tanks keep on fighting!" Then they were destroyed to the last tank. On 6 November 1942, the Germans acknowledged that in the sector allotted to the Ariete " the British were made to pay for their penetration with enormous losses in men and material. The Italians fought to the last man. THESE ARE ITALIAN SKINS WERE ...

Subscribe to Excellent World War II Videos. Updated Weekly On July 1942, General Erwin Rommel and the Italo-German Panzer Armee Afrika, (part of the Deutsches Afrika Korps) were only 113km (70 miles) from Alexandria. The situation was so serious that Winston Churchill made the long journey to Egypt to discover for himself what needed to be done. Churchill decided to make changes to the command structure. General Harold Alexander was placed in charge of British land forces in the Middle East and Bernard Montgomery became commander of the Eighth Army. On 30th August, 1942, Erwin Rommel attacked at Alam el Halfa but was repulsed by the Eighth Army. Montgomery responded to this attack by ordering his troops to reinforce the defensive line from the coast to the impassable Qattara Depression. Montgomery was now able to make sure that Rommel and the German Army was unable to make any further advances into Egypt. Over the next six weeks Montgomery began to stockpile vast quantities of weapons and ammunition to make sure that by the time he attacked he possessed overwhelming firepower. By the middle of October the Eighth Army totaled 195000 men, 1351 tanks and 1900 pieces of artillery. This included large numbers of recently delivered Sherman M4 and Grant M3 tanks. On 23rd October Montgomery launched Operation Lightfoot with the largest artillery bombardment since the First World War.
