The Faiyum Portraits
I've decided to re-upload my very first Youtube video, I did not like how the first one turned out. This video features the beautiful and captivating Faiyum Portraits, burial masks from Graeco-Roman Egypt with the soundtrack 'The Rule of the Parabolani' from the movie 'Agora.' Many of the faces in the film were based off these gorgeous portraits.

The portraits of Faiyum | Rafael Pérez Arroyo, Hymn to the Seven Hathor
"Faces from the Past" The portraits of Faiyum (Egypt - I th BC - II th AD) Music: Hymn to the Seven Hathor (from 'Music in the Age of the Pyramids') composed, arranged and conducted by Rafael Pérez Arroyo Arroyo's Hathor Ensemble Music in the Age of the Pyramids represents the first try of a reconstruction of the music of Ancient Egypt. After ten years of research carried out by the Spanish musicologist Rafael Pérez Arroyo, with the collaboration of Syra Bonet, the Centro de Estudios Egipcios has published a scientific works on the music, musicians, iconography, dance and musical instruments of Ancient Egypt. The result of this research work is a book and a record entitled 'Music in the Age of Pyramids': the music is performed by Arroyo's Hathor Ensemble. The realization of the music by Arroyo was based on study of the metric structure of hymns which survive in writing, on discussion of music theory from heiroglyphics, sonic descriptions by ancient authors, and ancient iconography. Arroyo has also tried to decode the hand gestures (the same source used for Biblical music), and discovered three basic modes for Ancient Egyptian music. Fayum/Faiyum Portraits
The Fayum Portraits are preserved paintings of ancient Egyptians found on the covers of mummy tombs in burial chambers in Faiyum Oasis (a basin in the desert immediately to the west of the Nile south of Cairo) as well as in several other burial sites in Egypt. These paintings are absolutely magnificent and convey such strong emotions on the faces of these previously lived people. Enjoy!

Resurrection of a Dark Fayum Beauty (Photoshop Restoration)
Portraits such as these are some of the most poignant surviving artifacts from around the time of, but not beyond, the 3rd century, in which the dead, such as they were, were painted and immortalized on planks of wood or other surfaces which sometimes covered the face of their mummy. It is generally accepted that this style of portrait was in vogue in the Greek colonies within Egypt, which gradually phased out with political, religious, and economic change. It is a fascinating spotlight in that period of Egypt's history, where the clear separation between the Greek and Egyptian portraits began to mingle and reveal citizens of mixed ancestry, combining Greek and Egyptian features in their faces.

Die Pyramide von Hawara (El Faiyum, Ägypten 1976)
Vom Gouverneur der Provinz El Faiyum bekommen wir eine Sondergenehmigung zum Besuch der Pyramide von Hawara. Sie liegt in einem militärischen Sperrgebiet. Amenemhet III liess sie im 2. Jahrtausend v.

Return of an Old Fayum Man (Photoshop Reconstruction)
Another of a small series of reconstructions revolving around the ancient funerary portraits of Fayum, Egypt. *I know less about this particular portrait than most. It is possible, but not certain, that the original painting is located in the Cairo Museum, but I haven't been able to confirm that yet.
