Supporters and opponents of Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza have clashed near the state broadcaster's headquarters in the capital Bujumbura.
The fighting on Thursday comes a day after Major General Godefroid Niyombare, the country's former intelligence chief, said he had deposed Nkurunziza in a coup while the president was on a trip to neighbouring Tanzania.
That claim was rebuked by Army Chief of Staff General Prime Niyongabo who said the coup attempt had failed.
Al Jazeera's Malcolm Webb, reporting from Bujumbura, said those fighting at the national radio and TV compound include rival factions within the army.
"We understand there are several dozen heavily armed soldiers who are loyal to Nkurunziza and a greater number of soldiers outside supporting the coup," he said.
Supporters and opponents of the president were making competing claims about who controlled the area, Webb said, adding radio broadcasting networks were among the few means of information reporting on the current situation in the country.
"Radio stations have the ability to broadcast nationwide and are crucial at this stage. This is not a very developed country, it's one of the poorest in Africa," he said.
"Whoever controls the radio staions and says they are in power is probably 70 to 80 percent on the way to actually making that come true."

Russian experts have claimed Malaysian Boeing MH17 was shot down by a Ukrainian warplane and not a ground to air missile.
This follows the release of 'leaked' satellite images which show a missile streaking towards the passenger plane, produced tonight by Russia's main state broadcaster.
It was claimed that the space pictures were from a British or US satellite.
The flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was travelling over the conflict-hit region when it disappeared from radar.
A total of 283 passengers, including 80 children, and 15 crew members were killed.

NewsChannel 9 anchor Calvin Sneed says McAfee was one of the first people he met when he started working at NewsChannel 9 in 1972 and even after leaving the station, they stayed in touch.
"The last thing he told me was 'Despite what everybody said about you, I think you're going to do ok'and I always liked that. Even though I know he said it in jest, but just the way he said it made me laugh and Bill was like that. He could make you laugh," Sneed remembered.

The state-owned Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) has fired almost 300 employees, including managers and journalists, state-run media report.
Unions say there have been 20,000 job losses in the country since a Supreme Court ruling on 17 July which made it easier for companies to sack employees.
The ruling allows employers to fire any worker without any benefits as long as they are given three months' notice.
The Zimbabwe Federation of Trade Unions has described the ruling as "madness".
ZBC will close a TV channel, according to the Zimbabwean news site the Daily News.
In addition, the offices of the state radio station Voice of Zimbabwe have also closed, reports Voice of America.
Last week the Daily News reported that state-owned newspapers had fired hundreds of workers.
This, it added, was despite the state-owned media "leading a crusade against scores of other companies, including media organizations", that have laid off staff.
Local media reported that over the weekend heavily armed police blocked the country's main workers' union from protesting against the recent wave of job losses.

Bullfights returned to live national television in Spain on Wednesday, six years after they were banned from the widely watched state channel RTVE.
The transmissions were halted in 2006 by Spain's previous Socialist administration, which said they were costly and coincided with key TV viewing hours for young children.
But the Socialists were ousted last November by voters outraged over Spain's nose-diving economy and the conservative Popular Party, which won in a landslide, is led by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, a staunch bullfight supporter.
The broadcast featured three of Spain's most famous bullfighters and bulls by a renowned breeder, giving a boost to a tradition hit hard by declining popularity and a dire economic crisis.
Julian Lopez, known by his stage name of 'El Juli', killed three hulking half-ton bulls and he and fellow matador Alejandro Talavante so delighted the crowd in the northern city of Valladolid that they were carried out of the bullring on their assistants' shoulders.
He and other fighters are waiving payments demanded in better economic times for television rights, a decision that helped Rajoy's austerity-minded conservative government in its drive to get the fights back on national television.
Bullfighting supporters hope the revived national broadcasts will interest more people in the fights, which are seeing older audiences and more and more empty seats at bullrings.
"I like it very much because lately Spanish customs have been forgotten," one supporter said outside the ring in Valladolid on Wednesday.
Bullfighting has suffered deep cuts over the last several years by Spanish towns and cities that traditionally fund fights during the summer months.
RTVE said the decision to ban the broadcasts was in part 'political' but subsequent audience research shows the decision to resume broadcasts is correct it says.
Wednesday's fight was one of the last of this year's season and RTVE hasn't yet said how many it will air next year, though supporters want frequent broadcasts, especially from the most famous bullrings in Madrid and Seville.
But animal rights groups, like the anti-bullfight organisation AnimaNaturalis, say the live broadcasts are a waste of air time, on spectacles squeezed by declining interest driven by generational change and hard times.
Despite the six-year halt to live national broadcasts, Spaniards were still able to see bullfights on TV on pay channels and on regional public TV stations that decided to keep up the tradition.
Bullfights and related events, such as the annual San Fermin Pamplona bull-runs, are also a multi-million-dollar industry and a major tourist draw.
Last March the industry presented a petition with 500-thousand signatures to Parliament, demanding that bullfighting be classified as being in the interest of preserving Spanish culture.
Rajoy's administration is expected to introduce legislation to confirm that, which would overturn Catalonia's outright ban on bullfighting which came into force earlier this year.
Bullfighting has also been banned since 1991 in Spain's Canary Islands.
There is no timeline set for when the legislation will be proposed, but passage is guaranteed because Rajoy's Popular Party has an absolute majority in Parliament, and opposition parties including the Socialists are expected to let members break ranks to vote in favour.

Bullfights return live to Spanish state television on Wednesday evening, six years after they were banned from the widely watched public channel RTVE.
The transmissions were halted in 2006 by Spain's previous Socialist administration, which said they were costly and coincided with key TV viewing hours for young children.
But the Socialists were ousted last November by voters outraged over Spain's nose-diving economy, and the conservative Popular Party that won in a landslide is led by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, a staunch bullfighting defender.
At Madrid's Las Ventas bullring, a few men queued for tickets on Wednesday, while tourists were shown around the empty stadium.
Bullfighting supporters hope the revived national broadcasts will interest more people in the fights, which are seeing older audiences and more and more empty seats at bullrings.
Bullfighting has suffered deep cuts over the last several years by Spanish towns and cities that traditionally fund fights during the summer months.
Wednesday evening's broadcast from the northern city of Valladolid will feature one of Spain's most famous bullfighters, Julian Lopez - known by his nickname "El Juli".
He and other fighters are waiving payments demanded in better economic times for the right to broadcast their battles, a decision that helped Rajoy's austerity-minded conservative government in its drive to get the fights back on national TV.
RTVE's communications director Alfonso Nasarre said he suspects the decision to ban the broadcasts in 2006 was "political."
"Now we are being accused of having made this decision based on politics too, and I insist that people are free to believe so, but we have actually made it based on accurate audience data that will prove we are right," he said.
Wednesday's fight is one of the last of this year's season and RTVE hasn't yet said how many it will air next year, though supporters want frequent broadcasts, especially from the most famous bullrings in Madrid and Seville.
But animal rights groups, such as anti-bullfighting organisation AnimaNaturalis, say the live broadcasts are a waste of air time for spectacles squeezed by declining interest driven by generational change and hard times.
Sergio Garcia, institutional director for AnimaNaturalis, said RTVE's move was a "backward step."
"Being a violent show, and being broadcast in pre-watershed hours, we can only think this is a consequence of the pressure made by pro-bullfighting groups, who are trying to prevent the show, which is rejected by an 80 percent of the population, from disappearing," he said.
Despite the six-year halt to live national broadcasts, Spaniards were still able to see bullfights on TV on pay channels and on regional public TV stations that decided to keep up the tradition.
Bullfighting is steeped in history, and the centuries-old events that inspired the likes of Goya, Picasso and Hemingway are also popular in Colombia, Ecuador, France and Mexico.
Bullfights and related events, such as the annual San Fermin Pamplona bull-runs, are also a multi-million-dollar industry and a major tourist draw.
The president of the Union of Bullfighting Supporters Federation, Jorge Fajardo, said the broadcast was a victory for supporters.
"There are many TV shows that are much more harmful and disrespectful to people and humanity, many movies that generate violence, while bullfights have no violence at all," Fajardo said.
Bullfighting advocates aren't easing up the pressure with their coup of getting the fights back on TV.
Last March they presented a petition with 500-thousand signatures to Parliament, demanding that bullfighting be classified as being in the interest of preserving Spanish culture.

STORYLINE:
Greek state TV and radio were gradually pulled off the air late on Tuesday, hours after the government said it would temporarily close all state-run broadcasts and lay off about 2,500 workers as part of a cost-cutting drive demanded by the bailed-out country's international creditors.
The conservative-led government said the Hellenic Broadcasting Corp., or ERT, will reopen "as soon as possible" with a new, smaller workforce.
It wasn't immediately clear how long that would take, and whether all stations would reopen.
Thousands of media workers and supporters protested the closure outside the company's headquarters in the Athens suburb of Aghia Paraskevi.
The surprise move heralds the first direct public sector layoffs in more than three years of painful austerity, which have already cost nearly 1 million private sector jobs.
The announcement widened cracks in the year-old governing coalition, with both minority partners condemning the corporation's suspension, while international journalists' associations expressed dismay.
ERT TV and radio started to be yanked off the air in several parts of the country around 11 p.m. (2000 GMT) on Tuesday, about an hour before the government said all signals would go dead, although satellite broadcasts continued.
A Finance Ministry statement said ERT has been formally disbanded, and authorities would "secure" the corporation's facilities.
Protesters sang songs and waved flags outside the corporation's Athens headquarters.
"I feel that a public service is being cut and sold out," said Giannis Mamouzelos, a retired ERT Journalist, who worked at the station for some 36 years.
"This is because no one can really believe that there is an ounce of truth in what they say that a new public TV station or a carrier under public or state supervision will reopen based on the model that ERT was initially conceived."
Riot police deployed outside ERT buildings in several parts of Greece, but no clashes were reported.
Debt-stifled Greece has depended on rescue loans from its European partners and the International Monetary Fund since May 2010.
In exchange, it imposed deeply resented income cuts and tax hikes, which exacerbated a crippling recession and forced tens of thousands of businesses to close, sending unemployment to a record of 27 percent.

New state broadcaster airs news programmes following abrupt closure of state TV

Greece's new state television channel began airing news programmes on Wednesday, more than two months after the government's abrupt closure of state broadcaster ERT drew international condemnation and triggered an acute political crisis.
The move came as the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the world's largest association of public broadcasters, halted the relay of programmes that the sacked workers of the now defunct ERT have been producing since the closure.
Since ERT was shuttered on June 11, ERT workers have taken over the company's building in Athens and produced 24-hour programming that the EBU has been streaming by satellite and the Internet.
The EBU announced earlier this week that it would halt its streaming of those programmes on Wednesday morning because ERT's interim successor was to begin news programming.
The move was criticised by former ERT staff on Wednesday.
Panagiotis Kalfagiannis, president of POSPERT, the union representing ERT workers, spoke as the EBU was still carrying the ERT signal.
He said ERT would "keep on working and producing the same complete programme that we have been producing up to today", regardless of the EBU decision.
"It will be available online for everyone, from our live streaming. What we will lose is the capacity to transmit to some in the country alongside the analogue television signal," he said.
Also present at the ERT headquarters on Wednesday was Afroditi Stamouli, Member of Parliament for Greece's main opposition party, the Syriza radical left coalition (SYRIZA).
She described EBU's decision as "upsetting" and hoped that it would not be implemented.
"Syriza has been supporting the ERT's struggle," she said.
"It considers it a struggle not only for their jobs but also for democracy."
ERT journalist Nikos Aggelidis said many former employees were still present at the headquarters, and described the decision of the government "to fire us" as illegal.
Greece's conservative-led government cited the need to cut costs due to the country's severe financial crisis when it abruptly closed ERT in June and fired all 2,700 staff.
The ensuing outcry led to a small left-wing party withdrawing from the country's fragile three-party governing coalition, leaving the government with a tiny majority in Parliament.
Up until Wednesday a temporary state broadcaster set up after ERT's closure had been airing mainly documentaries and old Greek films.
ERT unionists vowed the programming by the sacked workers would continue via the Internet.
While sites that had been using the EBU transmission went dead as the signal was cut at 10 am local time (0700 GMT), news programming with the old ERT logo continued uninterrupted via another site.
Greek authorities recently announced that more than 500 people had been hired on a two-month contract for Greece's new interim state broadcaster, which so far has born the simple logo of 'Public Television'.
Its first news programme, a two-hour broadcast that began at 8 am (0500GMT) on Wednesday, focused mainly on the analysis of domestic news by a panel of journalists, but also included international news items based on the BBC website and footage from Al-Jazeera and British broadcaster Sky News.

CAPTION: China's state broadcaster says the pyrotechnics that set fire to a new luxury hotel, gutting the structure and killing a firefighter, were so powerful that a special permit was needed, but it was never obtained. (Feb. 10)
[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]
A day after this ... (nat sound of fire)
Chinese investigators are on the prowl, looking into who exactly is to blame.
The unfinished, 520-foot Mandarin Oriental hotel went up in spectacular flames Monday night as a fireworks display went awry.
One firefighter was killed battling the blaze.
Officials now say China Central Television was behind the display.
Officials there say they hired a company to set off hundreds of large fireworks as part of the lunar new year celebration.
They say it was supposed to be set off in an open area beside the hotel, however video showed spectacular bursts of fireworks just above the top of the building.
The fireworks were also classified as grade 'A' meaning, C-C-T-V was supposed to get a special permit to set them off in the downtown area, however officials say organizers never bothered with the paperwork and ignored police warnings.
C-C-T-V has apologized.
Still, it's too soon to say how much damage was done to the structure or if it can be salvaged or must be torn down.

As for national networks, you can see for yourself what is allowed and what is not. There is true competition in print and there is obviously no competition among networks, especially in news."
9. Tilt down Ostankino television tower
STORYLINE:
A leading Russian television news programme has been shut down and its anchor fired two days after the programme tried to broadcast an interview with the widow of a slain Chechen separatist leader.
The announcement of Leonid Parfyonov's dismissal and the closure of his show "Namedni (meaning Recently)" was made in a statement by the NTV television channel on Wednesday.
In recent years NTV has been the focus of concern over media freedom in Russia. The station was taken over by an arm of the state-connected natural gas monopoly Gazprom in 2001 after its owner Valdimir Gusinsky was charged with financial misdeeds in a probe widely seen as punishment for the network's critical coverage of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his war in Chechnya.
Since then, NTV's coverage had become less assertive but Parfyonov's programme retained an edge.
But the weekly programme's most recent broadcast included an interview with Malika Yandarbiyeva, the widow of the Chechen separatist figure Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev, who was killed when his car was bombed in Qatar in February.
Two Russian security officers are on trial for the killing.
The interview was shown in the programme's broadcast in Far Eastern regions, but was pulled from broadcasts in more populous western regions several hours later.
Parfyonov said the removal of the segment was the only reason for the closure of the programme. It was removed on orders from the station's leadership.
Putin has come under wide criticism for allegedly stifling media freedom and Western organisations and observers have sharply criticised Russian broadcasters for slanted coverage during this year's presidential election campaign and last year's parliamentary election.
NTV is one of three television channels with wide reach across the sprawling country. The other two are state-controlled.

State-run broadcaster the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) is set to show a TV series inspired by the political career of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Habertürk daily reported on Thursday.
The TV series "Aynamdaki Gökyüzü" (The Sky in My Mirror) will recount the story of a group of imam hatip (religious) high school students, who are supposedly based on Erdoğan, Turkey's eleventh President Abdullah Gül and late former Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan.
The show is currently being produced with a budget of TL 650,000 and will be aired next season.
Erbakan was the founder of the conservative National View movement that gave birth to Erdoğan's Justice and Development Party (AK Party). Erdoğan parted ways with the Virtue Party (FP) led by Erbakan and established the AK Party in 2001. Erdoğan then managed to secure votes from nearly all segments of society by saying he had changed and "removed the shirt of the National View." Erdoğan's AK Party came to power in 2002, garnering the most number of votes among other parties with a vote share of 34.6 percent.

Greece's state broadcaster ERT went back on air on Thursday, two years after being closed down under austerity measures.
The radio and television channels shut in June 2013 after the then-government called it "a haven of waste".
The left-wing Syriza party made the reinstatement of ERT a key pledge in January's election, which it won.
The party said all of the more than 2,600 staff made redundant in 2013 have been offered jobs by the station.
"It's a special day for all Greeks, for those who love Greece and for those who love freedom of information," presenter Nikos Aggelidis said at the start of the first show on Thursday.
"We're nervous. We're very touched."
His co-host Vasiliki Haina said: "It's a special day for us, a difficult day."
ERT's television channel went off air in the middle of a programme, and viewers saw only a black screen. There had been no warning of the channel coming to an end.
The decision to end ERT, that cost €300m (£219m, $337m) to run, led to protests on Greek streets.
But some said the network was plagued by cronyism and had appeared immune from cuts and reform.
While ERT continued to broadcast on the internet, a smaller-scale replacement, Nerit, was introduced in May last year.
Nerit enjoyed moderate success despite a smaller staff, and secured Champions League football coverage and rights to broadcast the Eurovision song contest.
Nerit's television operation merged with ERT on Thursday morning.
The letters N and I were removed from the sign on Nerit's building to spell ERT earlier this week.
ERT will be funded by a €3 surcharge added to electricity bills - less than the surcharge before it went off air.
Greece's government, which is fighting to secure loans to help stabilise the country's finances, called the reinstatement of ERT "a victory for democracy".
wn.com/Greece's State Broadcaster Ert Back On Air After Two Years
Greece's state broadcaster ERT went back on air on Thursday, two years after being closed down under austerity measures.

In a debate moderated by TIMES NOW's Tina Sharma Tiwari and Padmaja Joshi, panelists -- Nalin Kohli, Natl Spokesperson, BJP & Advocate; Prem Shukla, Executive Editor, Dopahar ka Saamna; R Rajagopalan, Senior Journalist; Brijesh Kalappa, Spokesperson, Congress; Prof. Kamal Mitra Chenoy, Professor, Centre for Comparative Politics & Political Theory, JNU; and Ajoy Bose, Sr Journalist -- discuss the controversy over Doordarshan's broadcast of RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat's speech, and Congress and Left parties slamming the "misuse" of Doordarshan by BJP.
A controversy broke out on Oct 3, 2014 over the live telecast by state broadcaster -- Doordarshan -- of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's address at Nagpur. The hour-long broadcast by DD for the first time of an RSS function stoked a row with Congress and CPI(M) attacking the government for "misuse" of the state broadcaster while BJP defended it, saying RSS genuinely contributed to patriotism and always patronised 'justice to all' philosophy. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat described Hindutva as the country's "national identity" and the "thread of unity" running through its diversities. Speaking at the customary function on Dusshera which coincides with 89th foundation day of his organisation, the RSS chief also patted the Narendra Modi government for initiatives on national security, economy and international relations in a short period of four months. Congress spokesman Sandeep Dikshit termed the hour-long telecast as a "dangerous tradition", saying RSS is a controversial religious and political organisation. "It is a dangerous tradition. This is not an organisation which is completely neutral. It is a controversial organisation," he said, adding it is a political decision of the government. His party colleague Abhishek Manu Singhvi feared that from now on, the country would be ruled through the official media "for Nagpur, by Nagpur and of Nagpur". Terming the development as "the most unfortunate, gross, blatant misuse of official government largesse and machinery," he said it as "absolutely amazing, shocking, unbelievable and unprecedented". He contended that the broadcast has once again brought to fore the real game, character and definition of the "real" remote control. Another Congress leader Rashid Alvi said, "this naked state majoritarianism must be resisted." Former Union Minister Salman Khurshid said, "we do not accept the record of RSS as being above board in terms of our national aspirations". Condemning the live broadcast, CPI(M) said, "The RSS uses the occasion propagate its Hindutva ideology. The national public broadcaster has no business to telecast live the speech of the Chief of an organisation like the RSS." The CPI also condemned the live telecast with its National Secretary D Raja saying the government, particularly the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, should give an explanation to the people for allowing DD to be the mouthpiece for the RSS. PM Narendra Modi hailed the Dusshera address of RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat and said the issues of social reform he raised are "very relevant" today. Defending the telecast, BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi said people are interested in what Bhagwat says as his statement is newsworthy. She said Prasar Bharti is an independent organisation and it has all the right to select its news. Attacking the Congress and Left for raising objections, she said, "They are trying to gain relevance by raising raising non-issues." She added that the Congress and Left never raised objections when the Pope's message was telecast live, even when they were in power. Lekhi's party colleague Shaina N C said the RSS is a nationalist organisation which believes in 'India first' and the country above the interest of any individual.

The CPI also condemned the live telecast with its National Secretary D Raja saying the government, particularly the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, should give an explanation to the people for allowing DD to be the mouthpiece for the RSS. Lekhi's party colleague Shaina N C said the RSS is a nationalist organisation which believes in 'India first' and the country above the interest of any individual.
wn.com/The Newshour Debate Row Over Live Telecast Of Rss Chief's Address By Dd Part 1 (3Rd Oct 2014)
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is a broadcaster funded by the U.S. government that provides "news, information, and analysis" to countries in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East "where the free flow of information is either banned by government authorities or not fully developed". RFE/RL is supervised by the Broadcasting Board of Governors, a bi-partisan federal agency overseeing all U.S. international broadcasting services.
They were founded as an anti-communist news source in 1949 by the National Committee for a Free Europe, as part of a large-scale Psychological Operation during the Cold War. RFE/RL received funds from the Central Intelligence Agency until 1972.[5] During the earliest years of Radio Free Europe's existence, the CIA and the U.S. Department of State issued broad policy directives, and a system evolved where broadcast policy was determined through negotiation among the CIA, the U.S. State Department, and RFE staff.[6]
RFE/RL was headquartered at Englischer Garten in Munich, Germany, from 1949 to 1995. In 1995, the headquarters were moved to Prague in the Czech Republic. European operations have been significantly reduced since the end of the Cold War. In addition to the headquarters, the service maintains 20 local bureaus in countries throughout their broadcast region, as well as a corporate office in Washington, D.C. RFE/RL broadcasts in 28 languages[7] to 21 countries[8] including Armenia, Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq.
