US National Organizer, 350.org

Through relentless campaigning and organizing over the past three years, 350.org has helped build a global grassroots movement to fight climate change. Working with diverse allies and volunteers, our spunky, dedicated team of organizers has energized millions of people around the globe to demonstrate sustainable climate solutions, organize with frontline communities and push for strong political action to address the climate crisis.

This year, 350.org is moving forward with multiple campaigns targetting the fossil fuel industry: divestment on and off college campusses, mobilizing against the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, and developing climate leaders the world over through leadership training and volunteer-led campaigns. Our theory of change takes its inspiration from social movements: we know that bold campaigns and empowered people can do extraordinary things, and move the political needle on climate change. We need your help making this a reality.

The National Organizer will be responsible for working with our staff and network of thousands of passionate and engaged grassroots leaders across the US to facilitate direct political engagement. This position exists at the intersection of grassroots leadership development, community organizing, political advocacy and direct action. The National Organizer will help local and state leaders within the 350 network put pressure on federal and state politicians and corporate targets through various creative and hard-hitting tactics.

An ideal candidate for this role will have experience with diverse organizing models, staff and volunteer coaching, group facilitation, have a strong command of online organizing tools, and a disposition toward innovation, flexibility, and speed.

CORE RESPONSIBILITY

In conjunction with the US Team, develop and mobilize over 200 highly-skilled volunteer local and state leadership teams to meet 350.org’s national campaign objectives and build a broader, deeper and more committed climate movement

MAIN ROLES

  • Recruit, mobilize, and train climate leaders and key allies at the local and state levels.
  • Help develop and run a robust mobilization strategy for 2013-14, based on 350.org’s campaign objectives.
  • Help implement grassroots leadership development, training, strategy and coaching systems.
  • Work with volunteer and field organizers to strategize and develop short and medium-term campaigns in key cities and states throughout the country.
  • Collect and disseminate stories of victory and struggle from all around the country on a regular basis, using new media and other communications tools.
  • Represent 350.org at events, and with grassroots activist groups, decision-makers, donors, and other allies, including the environmental community at large.
  • Track advancements in organizing on the part of other organizations and movements.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the climate issue and of the social, political, legislative, regulatory and economic framework relevant to the movement.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2-5 years of experience on issue advocacy, community organizing and/or political campaigns.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Problem solving and strategy development expertise.
  • Highly organized and competent at managing multiple projects at once without sacrificing quality.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and in close coordination with a team working remotely.
  • Commitment to empowering others and building grassroots power as a means to affect change.
  • Demonstrated experience in cross-class/race/generational organizing.
  • Experience in coalition-building and an ability to recognize and develop the diverse strengths of different kinds of organizations and activists for one cause.
  • Willingness to travel for site visits, training, and events and ability to work well from remote location.

HIGHLY WECOME SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Spanish language fluency and a global perspective on climate change and current events.
  • Relevant experience in social or environmental activism or advocacy, political strategy, grassroots organizing, social media and online organizing.
  • Experience with coalition and/or multi-stakeholder campaign planning and implementation.
  • Coaching, training, facilitation and online/offline strategy development skills.

LOCATION

350.org is a global organization with many people working “virtually” and remotely. That said, a candidate based in either New York, the San Francisco Bay Area or Washington DC is preferred.

Southeast Fossil Free Field Organizer

DESCRIPTION

Through relentless campaigning and organizing over the past three years, 350.org has helped build a global grassroots movement to fight climate change. Working with diverse allies and volunteers, our spunky, fun team of organizers has energized millions of people around the globe, demonstrated sustainable solutions, organized with frontline communities and influenced the debate on climate in the media and among politicians. 2013 will provide a ripe opportunity to scale up the movement in the United States, bring in massive numbers of new people, hold politicians accountable and fight back against corporate fossil fuel interests.
 
Fossil Free is a brand new project that helps connect student activists and organizers around the country (and globe) to a common narrative about climate change, and provide a campaign framework that aims directly at the source of the fossil fuel industry's power: it's money. The campaign works with concerned citizens -- especially students -- to take on the industry in their backyards and on their campuses through institutional divestment from fossil fuel corporations and escalated direct and political action.
 
The Fossil Free Field Organizer will be responsible for working with our staff and network of thousands of passionate and engaged grassroots leaders across the Southeastern US to launch fossil fuel divestment campaigns on campuses and at other institutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work with national staff and students at Universities and Colleges in the area to kick off fossil fuel divestment campaigns throughout the region.
  • Develop and support teams of on and off-campus climate activists and organizers throughout the region, and encourage responsible escalation.
  • Guide and mentor campus and community leaders through campus divestment campaigns, and provide opportunities for them to develop their organizing skill set.
  • Research, develop, and implement a plan to grow the climate movement in your region, and increase its visibility.
  • Plan at least two grassroots leadership workshops with 15-30 volunteer leaders.
  • Work closely with allies and partners in the state to ensure buy-in and coordination for visibility events. 
  • Liaise and support other progressive grassroots movements, and represent 350.org in partner and coalition work with them.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of climate change and energy finance, and of the social, political, legislative, regulatory and economic framework relevant to the campaign.
  • Craft timely online and offline communications to 350.org's volunteers and leaders, building towards escalated action, and keeping up campaign momentum on campus and off.
  • Communicate regularly with 350.org central staff, and drafting brief weekly reports outlining that week’s activities.

The Brazil Campaigner will be responsible for developing and implementing campaigns in Brazil based on 350.org’s campaign objectives. A successful candidate will also add capacity to our Latin America team and work directly with our Brazilian Coordinator organizing a National Power Shift summit in Brazil.  We are specifically looking for someone with previous experience developing and running campaigns, movement building, and good communication skills both online and offline. Along with the proven ability to develop and implement effective campaigns, the successful candidate will have what it takes to lead people and complex projects in a fast-paced environment, and be confident juggling multiple projects while working collaboratively with a remote team.

The Brazil Campaigner will work in conjunction with the Brazilian Coordinator to:

  • Develop and run a robust campaign strategy for 2013, based on 350.org’s campaign objectives

  • Work with our 350 supporters and organizers to mobilize for Global Power Shift and the subsequent national power shift summit

The Latin America campaigner position will be responsible for coordinating and implementing 350.org’s campaign strategy in the region, including Brazil. A successful candidate will demonstrate a deep personal commitment to fighting the climate crisis and building a safer, more just world. He or she will also be able to work strategically and dynamically across a wide variety of campaigns and projects in Latin America while supporting our campaigns around the world. A successful candidate will also have extensive campaigns experience in Latin America and a wealth of creativity and energy to manage diverse campaigns that extend across all cultural and political contexts in the region.

The Latin America Campaigner will work closely with the International Campaigns Coordinator, the Latin America Regional Coordinator and the Brazilian Coordinator on the following responsibilities:

  • Work with volunteer and field organizers to strategize and develop short and medium-term campaigns in key cities and countries throughout Latin America
  • Recruit, mobilize, and train climate leaders and key allies at the local and national level.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the climate issue and of the social, political, legislative, regulatory and economic framework relevant to the movement from a climate justice perspective.
  • Represent 350.org at events, and with grassroots activist groups, decision-makers, donors, and other allies, including the environmental community at large.

Essential Job Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience working on campaigns in Latin America.
  • Staff management experience especially working remotely.
  • Project management skills – highly organized and able to juggle many concurrent priorities.
  • English and Spanish writing skills
  • Training and facilitation skills
  • Excellent grassroots organizing skills.
  • Extensive experience in activist settings.
  • Strong relationships in the international climate movement or comparable experience with related grassroots international movements.

Responsibilities: The Latin America Communications Coordinator will work in conjunction with the Latin America Regional Coordinator on the following responsibilities:

 

Communications strategy

  • Develop a communications strategy for the region, based on 350.org’s regional campaigns and Global Power Shift
  • Compile and maintain a press lists for the region
  • Responsible for integrating and sharing our regional work to the larger 350 community, most of which will be in English

Writing, editorial, and branding

  • Editing and proof-reading a range of documents, including email blasts, web content, and English to Spanish translations
  • Writing content in various forms to communicate our Global Power Shift project, its results and impacts. This will include actively engaging with participants of the project and writing a range of feature articles and news stories

Web content management

  • Updating and managing the web content for 350.org Spanish websites, ensuring that are updated with new content on a weekly basis
  • Ensuring high quality and regular content and taking overall responsibility for these websites
  • Capturing film videos and either undertaking minor editing or commissioning editing for uploading onto the web and other social media sites
  • Providing input and suggestions on improvements to the 350.org website

Outreach strategy

  • Actively developing and managing targeted mailing lists and databases for dissemination of our outreach work and developing and maintaining our lists  
  • Managing 350.org social media efforts. This will include extending outreach via Twitter, Facebook, and other channels to ensure these efforts are tied in with Global Power Shift and our campaigns

 

Essential Job Qualifications

  • Complete fluency in Spanish and English
  • Top-notch writing skills
  • An eye for detail
  • A strong grounding in climate change and development issues
  • Demonstrated practical communications, journalism, or campaigning experience
  • A willingness to learn on the job and develop the role into that of higher responsibility over time

CNN called our first campaign “the most widespread day of political action in the planet’s history” and Philanthropedia recently ranked 350.org the second most impactful climate nonprofit in the United States.



350.org is ready to take on larger, more sophisticated campaigns and organizing, and that work requires a larger, more sophisticated Operations Team making sure our staff have the tools and support they need to tackle our boldest ambitions for helping solve the climate crisis. Our staff works from 13 countries and in a myriad of languages supporting a network in every corner of the world. Our work in the United States has developed into a climate campaigning powerhouse through both 350.org and our affiliated 501c4 organization, 350 Action Fund, supporting and expanding fronts in the climate battle on fossil fuel subsidies, the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline, fracking, and, most recently, divestment from the fossil fuel industry. CORE RESPONSIBILITY

The Finance and Operations Manager will be responsible for working in the Operations Team to support and improve all financial, HR, and legal responsibilities of the organization. She or he will work closely with the Operations Director to handle these responsibilities and work on a regular basis with the Executive Director, the Development Associate, and the Office Manager, in addition to brief contact with all staff on a regular basis. The Finance and Operations Manager will be particularly engaged in financial administration, working with staff and third-party accountants to handle day-to-day finances and managing the timeline for producing timely and accurate financial reporting.

MAIN DUTIES

  • Financial Administration: Handling the flow of invoices from staff and vendors to third party accountants for processing; Ensuring accurate, timely payments in a fast-paced campaign atmosphere; Producing wire transfer requests for international payments; Managing the day-to-day relationship with the organization’s third-party accounting firm; Processing incoming donations and grants.
  • Strategic Operations Development: Researching and implementing a wide range of new systems for the organization with the Operations Director, including areas such as staff finance and HR procedures, payment methods, 501c3/c4 cost sharing mechanisms, accounting codes and classification, and staff communications and project management  tools.
  • HR and Legal Support and Compliance: Supporting HR and Legal operations, including work with pro-bono legal teams as well as a wide range of partners and allies.

QUALIFICATIONS  

We’re looking for an individual who is energetic, meticulously organized, passionate, creative, self-motivated and a fast learner. We believe that the best Operations staff members are as mission-driven as our Campaign and Organizing staff.

The ideal candidate will have at least 3-5 years of experience working in the Operations or Administration arm of a campaign-oriented organization, with a strong background in financial administration and highly developed interpersonal skills.
