Where the Counterculture Prevails - Peter Coyote
Complete video at: fora.tv Actor and activist Peter Coyote describes important ways in which the 1960's counterculture succeeded. Despite the movement's failed political agendas, Coyote explains how its concepts of tribe, compassion and well-being are now tightly woven into today's mainstream culture. ----- Out of the 60's counterculture explosion came a radical street group called the Diggers, who became the heart and soul of the Haight-Ashbury experience. Named after a group of 17th century free-thinkers in England, the Diggers dedicated themselves to building a new morality in place of the money-hungry capitalistic society, cutting through the cultural propaganda via the medium of both street theater and "free" programs. They began to distribute free food, provide free medical care and sponsor free rock concerts in Golden Gate Park featuring musicians like the Grateful Dead. They burned money, left its ashes and set out to create the condition they described. Peter Coyote's memoir, first published in 1998, recounts his time as one of the group's founders and beyond. He weaves his experiences into a collection of stories from his life in San Francisco to communes and gypsy years on the road becoming part of the Free Family. Ordained practitioner of Zen Buddhism, activist, and actor, Peter Coyote began his work in street theater and political organizing in San Francisco. In addition to acting in 120 films, Coyote has won an Emmy for narrating the award-winning ...

Hitchens and Buckley Debate 1960s Counterculture
Complete video at: fora.tv In this 1998 interview, journalists William F. Buckley Jr. and Christopher Hitchens debate the true motives behind the protest movements of the 1960s. Buckley attributes the rise of counterculture movements to a general "listlessness" that "called for a kind of masturbatory relief." ----- What happened in 1968 and why? From a bloody war in Vietnam to a bloody struggle for equality in our nation's streets, what is the legacy of '68? William F. Buckley, Jr., late Editor-at-large at the National Review, and Christopher Hitchens, Contributing Editor at Vanity Fair chose opposing sides that year and now take a look back, explaining the rights and wrongs of the Right and the Left and their personal triumphs and regrets. - Hoover Institution William F. Buckley Jr. was a political commentator and columnist. He founded the political magazine National Review and hosted the television show "Firing Line." Christopher Hitchens is an author, journalist and literary critic. Now living in Washington, DC, he has been a columnist at Vanity Fair, The Nation and Slate; additionally, he is an occasional contributor to many other publications.Peter M. Robinson is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution, where he writes about business and politics, edits Hoover's quarterly journal, the Hoover Digest, and hosts Hoover's television program, Uncommon Knowledge.

From Counterculture to Cyberculture: The Legacy of the Whole Earth Catalog
Stanford University Libraries presents a Symposium celebrating the legacy of the Whole Earth Catalog featuring: Stewart Brand, founder of the Whole Earth Catalog and co-chairman of the Long Now Foundation Kevin Kelly, former executive editor of Wired magazine and author of Out of Control: The Rise of Neo-Biological Civilization and New Rules for the New Economy Howard Rheingold, author of The Virtual Community: Homesteading on the Electronic Frontier and Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution Fred Turner, moderator and assistant professor of communication, Stanford University, author of From Counterculture to Cyberculture: Stewart Brand, the Whole Earth Catalog, and the Rise of Digital Utopianism With an introduction by Henry Lowood, Curator for Germanic & History of Science Collections, Stanford University Libraries. The panelists will illuminate the extraordinary impact of the Whole Earth Catalog and the American counterculture on contemporary computing and everyday life. The event celebrates the library's one-of-a-kind collection of Whole Earth Papers. In the fall of 1968, Stewart Brand published a 61-page miscellany of hand tools, books, and other gear. A generation of long-hairs was heading “back to the land” and Brand aimed to give them the tools they'd need to get there. While most rural communes soon failed, the ideals and the social networks Brand and his colleagues built up around the Catalog would last a lifetime. Over the next forty years, they transformed ...

THIS IS ALEX -TOME 4
Desillusion magazine, supported by RVCA and RAEN are proud to present their latest video “This is Alex”, a video portrait that pays tribute to the Californian longboarder/musician Alex Knost.
Hailing from Costa Mesa, California, Alex Knost certainly stands out of the crowd; a worthy heir to a surf culture that's made up of pioneers, and numerous creative artists. After having followed in the footsteps of his spiritual big brother, Joel Tudor, Alex became in turn one of the best longboarders in the world, paddling his way to the front of the scene, in a counter culture that we thought was drowning under the waves of an extremely lucrative economy- surf industry. Almost uncatchable, the man flits like a butterfly from one art to the next (from photography to video, board shapes to music) trying to, like he says "lose himself in anything he does, hoping to exceed the limits that society has set him".
A slightly tormented soul, maybe a bit too realistic for this world, although the two obviously go hand in hand, "This is Alex "is a total immersion in his everyday life, a celebration of raw counter culture: To give, understand, learn and influence, without waiting for anything in return, if not to perpetuate a style and a philosophy of life.
After the great success of “This is Trouble”, a short movie portraying the life of snowboarder and musician Trevor “Trouble” Andrew that was launched last February (vimeo.com/desillusion/thisistrouble), the second, a tribute to Andrew Reynolds “ This is Andrew” ( vimeo.com/desillusion/thisisandrew ) , and the third "This is Ozzie”, a dedication to one of the most influential inspirations of the board culture scene, Ozzie Wright (vimeo.com/desillusion/thisisozzie ), Desillusion is proud to present the fourth opus of the " THIS IS" saga , with Alex Knost as guest host, a strong personality who's always inspired Desillusion's world and who has chosen to make his life an ode to art under any form or shape.
The video comes with the latest issue of Desillusion magazine featuring Alex Knost as their exclusive guest editor, available on dslmag.com/v5/shop.php

USUGROW
With mind bending meticulous detail, Usugrow’s work crosses the line between bad ass and refined elegance.
While developing his vision and technique, Usugrow worked designing promotional graphics for Japan's punk and metal scenes, Usugrows unique, stylized combination of traditional Japanese artwork and punk iconography soon made him the visual identity of Tokyo’s underground,
But Usugrows’ global notoriety begun when overseas brands saw the potential for collaborative projects, resulting in a series of collectable products and feature articles in leading counterculture and art publications. A global cult following quickly resulted.
As a conscious leader of his community, Usugrow has been using his fame to organize and promote a new Japanese art movement consisting of a tribe of highly talented artists with roots in the metal, punk, hip hop and tattoos, all of whom share his elegant aesthetics.
This group, known as The Shinganists (The Outsiders) consists of Usugrow, Mozyskey, Toshikazu Nozaka, Bene & Jun Kaneko and have exhibited collectively and individually across the globe, representing a true and revolutionary art movement.
Motifs of skulls and death are commonly depicted Usugrows black and white artwork, however instead acting as reminders our own mortality, Usugrow endeavors to represent them as symbols of rebirth and beauty.
Toshikazu exhibited along side fellow Shinganist artist Usugrow at Backwoods Gallery in July 2011

There was a brief period between 1987 and 1989 where Belgium, of all places, was pushing the envelope in electronic music. It preceded England's 'second summer of love' and was probably our equivalent of it, in that a whole generation's lives quite rapidly became based around taking ecstasy, dressing up, going clubbing and dancing to an odd, slowed down hypnotic mix of New Wave, Acid, EBM and everything else that sounded good. New Beat became a real craze that would attract thousands of ravers from all over Europe to Belgium's newly thriving club scene every weekend and inspired hundreds of releases that stormed the Belgian charts, regardless of it being completely ignored by the media and radio because it was not seen as "real" music. It was counterculture of the cheapest kind and due to its massive success, it quickly became very cheesy and novelty based, but there was an amazing side to New Beat that was dark and messed up and our mix is based on those releases, with a few hits thrown in for good measure.
