A836 road
The A836 road is entirely within the Highland area of Scotland, and 129 miles (208 km) long.
It branches from the A9 near Tain and runs generally north through Bonar Bridge and Lairg, until Tongue. Between Lairg and Tongue the road is single track for 38 miles (61 km). At Tongue the road turns east, following the north coast, passing through Thurso, and eventually ending at John o' Groats, where it meets the A99.
Although the road starts in Ross and Cromarty and ends in Caithness, the majority of its length is in Sutherland.
The A882 runs through or near towns and villages listed below. Junctions listed are with other classified roads.

Achany

Achany is a hamlet in Sutherland in the Scottish council area of Highland, Scotland. It lies off the B864 road on the west bank of the River Shin south of Lairg. The hamlet, which includes the Achany Glen (or Achany Forest), is also home to a Category B Listed building, Achany House, and a wind farm development that garners a community benefit fund.
Achany Glen is a mixed conifer forest of mixed broadleaf native woodland that lies to the west of the Shin Falls Visitor Centre. It contains many small glades, characterised by alders and birch coppice, as well as wood sorrel and moss. A trail spur, the salmon leap viewpoint, is located on the glen's Riverside Walk.
Construction of an onshore wind farm began in April 2009 and was completed in 2010, generating 38 Megawatts through 19 turbines. The Achany Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund was launched in early 2010, provided by SSE, the wind farm's developer, and managed by the Scottish Community Foundation, a registered grant-making charity.

/ˈdɔrnɒx/; Scottish Gaelic: Dòrnach pronounced [ˈt̪ɔːrˠn̪ˠəx]; Scots: Dornach) is a town and seaside resort, and former Royal burgh in the Highlands of Scotland. It lies on the north shore of the Dornoch Firth, near to where it opens into the Moray Firth to the east. The town is within the Highland local government council area, and within the county of Sutherland.
The town is near the A9 road, to which it is linked by the A949 and the B9168.
The town also has a Grass Air Strip Suitable for Small Aircraft and Helicopters.
Dornoch has the thirteenth-century Dornoch Cathedral, the Old Town Jail, and the previous Bishop's Palace which is now the well-known hotel, Dornoch Castle and a notable golf course, the Royal Dornoch Golf Club, named the 5th best golf course outside the United States in 2005 by Golf Digest magazine. It is also notable as the last place a witch was burnt in Scotland. Her name was Janet Horne; she was tried and condemned to death in 1727. There is a stone, the Witch's Stone, commemorating her death, inscribed with the year 1722. Legendary golf course designer Donald Ross began his career as a greenkeeper on the Royal Dornoch links. The golf course is next to the award winning blue flag beach.

It is the administrative centre for the Highland council area, and is regarded as the capital of the Highlands of Scotland. Inverness lies near two important battle sites: the 11th century battle of Blàr nam Fèinne against Norway which took place on The Aird and the 18th century Battle of Culloden which took place on Culloden Moor. It is the northernmost city in the United Kingdom and lies within the Great Glen (Gleann Mòr) at its north-eastern extremity where the River Ness enters the Moray Firth. At the latest, a settlement was established by the 6th century with the first royal charter being granted by Dabíd mac Maíl Choluim (King David I) in the 12th century. The Gaelic king, Mac Bethad mac Findláich (MacBeth) nicknamed An Rígh Dearg (The Red King) held a castle within the city where he ruled as Mormaer of Moray and Ross.

Lairg

Lairg (Scottish Gaelic: An Luirg) is a village in Sutherland, Highland, Scotland. It has a population of about 900 and is situated at the south-eastern end of Loch Shin.
It is unusual in the northern Highlands, if not unique, in being a sizeable settlement that is not on the coast. One of the reasons that Lairg is slightly larger than other non-coastal, Highland villages is due to its central location within the County of Sutherland. Lairg has four different roads that all converge in the vilage and used to be know as "The crossroads of the North". In the 19th century, Lairg was provided with a railway station (at NC582039) , on what is now called the Far North Line. This development means that the north west of Sutherland was now more easy to access. (The Far North Line links Inverness in the south with Thurso and Wick in the north.)
Lairg is also location of the largest single-day sheep sale in Europe. These auctions take place in August and brings many people from all over Scotland to buy or sell their sheep.

Sutherland
Sutherland is a registration county, lieutenancy area and former county of Scotland. It is now within the Highland council area. In Gaelic the area is referred to according to its traditional areas: Dùthaich Mhic Aoidh (or Dùthaich 'Ic Aoidh) (NW), Asainte (Assynt), and Cataibh (East). However, Cataibh will often be used to refer to the area as a whole.
The county town, and only burgh of the county, was Dornoch. Other settlements include Bonar Bridge, Lairg, Brora, Durness, Embo, Tongue, Golspie, Helmsdale, Lochinver, Scourie and Kinlochbervie.
Sutherland became a local government area in 1890, and the county was abolished in 1975, when the Sutherland district was created as one of eight districts of the Highland Region. The region was created at the same time as the district. The district was abolished in 1996, when the region became a council area.
The name Sutherland dates from the era of Norse rule and settlement over much of the Highlands and Islands, under the rule of the jarl of Orkney. Although it contains some of the northernmost land in the island of Great Britain, it was called Suðrland ("southern land") from the standpoint of Orkney and Caithness.

Thurso (Scots: Thursa,Scottish Gaelic: Inbhir Theòrsa) is a town and former burgh on the north coast of the Highland council area of Scotland. It is the northernmost town on the British mainland. At the 2001 Census, Thurso had a population of about 9,000.
The name comes from Old Norse Thjórsá, meaning "Bull's River". Historically, it is one of two burghs within the county of Caithness. It lies at the junction of the north-south A9 road and the west-east A836 road, connected to Bridge of Forss in the west and Castletown in the east.
Thurso's history stretches back to at least the era of Norse Orcadian rule in Caithness, which ended conclusively in 1266. The town was an important Norse port, and has a later history of trade with ports throughout northern Europe until the 19th century. In 1330 Scotland's standard unit of weight was brought in line with that of Thurso at the decree of King David II of Scotland, a measure of the town's economic importance. Old St Peter's Kirk is said to date from circa 1220 and the time of Caithness Bishop Gilbert Murray, who died in 1245. Much of the town, however, is a planned 19th-century development. A major expansion occurred in the mid-20th century when the Dounreay nuclear power plant was established at Dounreay, 9 miles (14 km) to the west of the town. Within a period of about five years, Thurso's population expanded rapidly, from around 2,500 to about 12,000 between 1955–58, as the nuclear plant attracted skilled migrants from all parts of the United Kingdom. By 1960, it dropped back to around 9,000, after a lot of the initial Dounreay construction crew left the area. Thurso is also the name of the viscountcy held by the Sinclair family in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The present Viscount Thurso is also the local MP.

James Matheson
Sir James Nicolas Sutherland Matheson, 1st Baronet (17 October 1796 – 31 December 1878), born in Shiness, Lairg, Sutherland, Scotland, was the son of Captain Donald Matheson, a Scottish trader in India. He attended Edinburgh's Royal High School and the University of Edinburgh.
After leaving university, Matheson spent two years in a London agency house before departing for Calcutta, India and a position in his uncle's trading firm, Mackintosh & Co.
In 1807, Matheson was entrusted by his uncle with a letter to be delivered to the captain of a soon-to-depart British vessel. He forgot to deliver the missive and the vessel sailed without it. Incensed at his nephew's negligence, the uncle suggested that young James might be better off back in England. He took his uncle at his word and went to engage a passage back home. However, a chance encounter with an old sea captain instead saw Matheson departing for Canton.
Matheson first met William Jardine in Canton in 1818. The two men later formed a partnership which also included Hollingworth Magniac and Daniel Beale. At first the new firm dealt only with trade between Canton, Bombay and Calcutta, at that time called the "country trade" but later extended their business to London.

Video compression used so as to include entire route. The section from approx 3 miles north of Lairg to Laxford Bridge along the A838, is of some 34 miles of single track road with passing places. It takes one through some very varied landscape, with Lochs (Loch Shin etc), mooreland and mountains (Arkle etc) all being visible.

Lairg (Scottish Gaelic: An Luirg) is a village in Sutherland, Highland, Scotland. It has a population of about 900 and is situated at the south-eastern end of Loch Shin.
It is unusual in the northern Highlands, if not unique, in being a sizeable settlement that is not on the coast. One of the reasons that Lairg is slightly larger than other non-coastal, Highland villages is due to its central location within the County of Sutherland. Lairg has four different roads that all converge in the vilage and used to be know as "The crossroads of the North". In the 19th century, Lairg was provided with a railway station (at NC582039) , on what is now called the Far North Line. This development means that the north west of Sutherland was now more easy to access. (The Far North Line links Inverness in the south with Thurso and Wick in the north.)

Sheep Sales[link]
Lairg is also location of the largest single-day sheep sale in Europe. These auctions take place in August and brings many people from all over Scotland to buy or sell their sheep.
Gala Week[link]
In July, Lairg holds a Gala Week. This is a week organised by a local committee in order to put on fun activities for both adults and children over one week. Events in this Gala Week include: fancy dress parades, a pet show, fishing competitions on Loch Shin or the Little Loch Shin, dances with live music in the local community centre and many more events.
Lairg Crofter's Show[link]
The Crofter's Show is a one-day event that has been running for 100 years. During this day, the Crofter's Show attracts many people to Lairg for events such as horse jumping competitions, sheep and cow judging, children's sports, Highland sports (e.g. tossing the caber, throwing the wellie/haggis) and home made crafts. Sheep racing has even become a main event in more recent years.
Little Loch Shin[link]
Little Loch Shin lies directly in the centre of the village. It is a made made loch created by the hydro-electric dam scheme, and is the home of the "Broon's hoose", a small wooden house placed on a small island and is visible from the village.
Loch Shin lies to the north of Lairg and is 17 miles long.
Lairg has a petrol station, pub/hotel, post office, pet shop, bank, campsite, primary school, tourist information centre and multiple local shops, cafes and B&Bs. Some of the tourists attractions include the Shin Falls, fishing, sightseeing and hillwalking.
The areas to the north and west of Lairg are very sparsely populated, crossed by just three single track roads.
Transport[link]
Lairg railway station lies on the picturesque Far North Line, north of Invershin and west of Rogart. The station is managed by First ScotRail.
A current proposal on the rail routes to the north of Inverness is to create a more direct rail link from Inverness to Dornoch via a new bridge and an old branch line, which would leave Lairg isolated on a circuitous alternative loop away from the main route[citation needed]. The new link would shorten journey times to Thurso and Wick. But reducing the rail service to Lairg might well be detrimental to the local economy. However, given the huge cost of building a rail bridge over the Dornoch Firth and the complete lack of enthusiasm for the project from the Scottish government it seems extremely unlikely that this proposal will ever become reality.[original research?]
The B864 road leads south and passes through the hamlet of Achany. The A836 road also runs south, parallel to this road and passes through the village of Achinduich. [1]
