Toonzai (not to be confused with Toonami, a program block on Cartoon Network that also features animated series) is a Saturday morning cartoon block on The CW that premiered on August 14, 2010. The former name for the block, The CW4Kids, is retained as a sub-brand to fulfill branding obligations for The CW per 4Kids Entertainment's contract to lease the network's Saturday morning time slots.

The block is programmed by 4Kids Entertainment, who also programmed the competing 4Kids TV on Fox until its late December 2008 discontinuation and subsequent shift to an online-only video on demand network. 4Kids also indicated that it will retain Yu-Gi-Oh! and Sonic X in its lineup, along with adding Dragon Ball Z Kai, a redone version of Dragon Ball Z from Funimation Entertainment, which is shared with Nicktoons in the USA.

The name is a portmanteau of "toon" and the Japanese term banzai, reflecting the majority of anime programming on the block.

On January 24, 2012 4Kids Entertainment's Toonzaki site reported via its Facebook page that traffic to the site rose 20% in the days following the United States government's closure of the Megaupload file-sharing service.^[1]

Programming differences[link]

In most markets, most affiliates use the network's current Saturday morning schedule, though some, such as Atlanta's WUPA-TV air the block on Sundays instead due to existing Saturday programming. Former WB affiliate WCCT-TV in Hartford airs the first three hours of the block on Saturday mornings and the last two hours on Sunday mornings to make room for their own local, syndicated, and religious programming. KMAX-TV in Sacramento airs the whole schedule on Saturday, but it is aired on a three hour tape delay (from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) because of their Saturday edition of Good Day Sacramento. WLFL-TV in Raleigh also airs the whole schedule, but two hours ahead (from 5 to 10 a.m.). XETV in Tijuana/San Diego airs the lineup in two blocks (one from 5-8 a.m. and another from 10 a.m.-12 p.m.) due to its Saturday morning newscast.

KMYS in San Antonio, which picked up the CW affiliation in 2010, decided to air the block during early Sunday morning and early Monday morning (split into a two-hour and three-hour block) airing before 5 a.m. due to its previous commitment of airing Fox's Weekend Marketplace infomercial block on Saturday mornings (a holdover from its MyNetworkTV affiliation), along with already existing religious and paid programming on Sunday mornings; this by default forces most younger viewers of the block in that market to record it overnight for later viewing or watch programming on the 4Kids website, if available. KPXJ in Shreveport, Louisiana does not air the last hour of the block and WLTZ-DT2 in Columbus, Georgia does not carry the first 30 minutes of the block.

While The CW recommends that its affiliates carry the Toonzai block at 7 a.m. Saturday mornings (regardless of time zone), its secondary CW Plus national feed for smaller markets airs the Toonzai block an hour earlier on its broadcast and cable-only affiliates in the Central, Mountain and Alaska time zones, as The CW Plus operates two separate feeds running on Eastern and Pacific time zone schedules.
