The Whitehouse Coup (1933) 1 of 3
The "Business Plot" (also the Plot Against FDR and the White House Putsch) was an alleged political conspiracy in 1933 wherein wealthy businessmen and corporations plotted a coup détat to overthrow United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1934, the Business Plot was publicly revealed by retired Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler testifying to the McCormack-Dickstein Congressional Committee. In his testimony, Butler claimed that a group of men had approached him as part of a plot to overthrow Roosevelt in a military coup. One of the alleged plotters, Gerald MacGuire, vehemently denied any such plot. In their final report, the Congressional committee supported Butler's allegations of the existence of the plot, but no prosecutions or further investigations followed, and the matter was mostly forgotten. On July 17, 1932, thousands of World War I veterans converged on Washington, DC, set up tent camps, and demanded immediate payment of bonuses due them according to the Adjusted Service Certificate Law of 1924. This "Bonus Army" was led by Walter W. Waters, a former Army sergeant. The Army was encouraged by an appearance from retired Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler, who had considerable influence over the veterans, being one of the most popular military figures of the time. A few days after Butler's arrival, President Herbert Hoover ordered the marchers removed, and their camps were destroyed by US Army cavalry troops under the command of General ...

Betty Boop 1933 Cab Calloway "Snow-White"
This 1933 cartoon featuring Cab Calloway is remarkable for having been animated by a single individual, Roland C. Crandall, and is considered one of the best cartoons ever made. Crandall received the opportunity to make Snow White on his own as a reward for his several years of devotion to the Fleischer studio, and the resulting film is considered both his masterwork and an important milestone of The Golden Age of American animation. (See The 50 Greatest Cartoons, as Selected by 1000 Animation Professionals, edited by Jerry Beck, Turner Publishing, Inc., 1994.) You don't get to see any live action of Cab in "Snow White," which is too bad, but the animation is incredible and, of course, the music is Cab and his Orchestra at their best. First Cab sings "St. James Infirmary" in the rotoscoped guise of Koko the Clown. "St. James Infirmary" was Cab's original signature tune, but he wanted something written specifically for himself, so he and Irving Mills wrote "Minnie the Moocher" to supplant "St. James Infirmary." The two melodies are extremely similar, and also bear a close resemblance to "Prohibition Blues." "Snow White" ends with the old Missourians instrumental, "Stopping the Traffic." This plot, such as it is, is really more a framework to display a series of gags, musical selections, and clever animation. Critics have cited the film as having some of the most imaginative animation and background drawings from the Fleischer Studios artists ...

Deluge (1933)
'Deluge' is a now almost-forgotten early American disaster movie made in 1933. For decades, it was thought that all prints had been lost, but an export version, dubbed into Italian and shortened by ten minutes, was found in the 1980s, and is now available on NTSC VHS tape (there is no DVD release available, sadly). Unlike later disaster films, the catastrophe - in this case, the unexplained destruction of New York (and the rest of the world) by earthquake and flood - happens early on, the rest of the film dealing with a group of survivors and a (racy for the time) love triangle. This video shows only the disaster itself. While crude in places (the mattes and composites in general leave a bit to be desired, and are not that great even for 1933), the sheer scale, ambition and execution of the miniature effects is spectacular and can only be applauded. A gigantic model of lower Manhattan was built, with breakaway buildings shaken to pieces and then washed away by thousands of gallons of water from dumptanks. In charge of the effects was Ned Mann, who later went to England and oversaw the effects for the Korda/Wells classic 'Things To Come' (1936). Republic Pictures bought 'Deluge' in the 1940s and mercilessly plundered the disaster scenes to use in their serials, most famously in 'King of the Rocket Men' (1949). Betty Boop 1933 Cab Calloway "The Old Man Of the Mountain"
"The Old Man of The Mountain" is non-stop Cab from beginning to end. He appears first as an owl, singing the title song. The words have been changed for the cartoon, in which the Old Man is a villain. In the original song, the Old Man is a benevolent character. Next we see Cab as the Old Man himself, rotoscoped and singing, "You Gotta Hi-De-Hi," followed by "The Scat Song." The cartoon begins with live footage of Cab and his Orchestra playing around with the tune of Minnie the Moocher while Cab scats mildly and grins at the camera. Whereas Cab may have been caught by surprise when they used live footage of him in the earlier cartoon, "Minnie the Moocher", this time he is ready. He and his band are in dress white uniforms, Cab's hair is slicked back, and he pays attention to the camera. (The drummer, Leroy Maxey, is still playing with his drumsticks, though!) Of the three cartoons starring Cab Calloway, this one has the least interesting and least surreal plot, and the animation is the crudest. Never-the-less, the very early live footage of Cab is a treasure, and this cartoon showcases his music from beginning to end, featuring three of his songs. He does some of his most remarkable ever scat singing in this version of The Scat Song. In all of the Fleisher cartoons, Cab's characters are set in caves with menacing and ominous background illustrations: skeletons, skulls, ghosts, leering faces, and gambling, alcohol and drug paraphernalia. People have claimed that the ...
