Alexandrov (town)
Alexandrov or Aleksandrov (Russian: Алекса́ндров) is a town in Vladimir Oblast, Russia, 120 kilometers (75 mi) north-east of Moscow. Population: 61,544 (2010 Census preliminary results); 64,824 (2002 Census); 68,220 (1989 Census).
Alexandrov Sloboda (the former name of the settlement) served as the capital of Russia for three months (December 1564 to February 1565) under Tsar Ivan the Terrible until he agreed to return his court and the relics of Moscow which he had taken with him. Ivan agreed to return after the church gave him permission to found the Oprichnina.
It was granted town status in 1778.

Bogolyubovo (Russian: Боголю́бово) is an urban-type settlement in Suzdalsky District, Vladimir Oblast, Russia, located some 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) north-east of Vladimir. Population: 4,218 (2002 Census); 4,143 (1989 Census); 3,900 (1969).
Bogolyubovo was once the residence of the Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky. It was built between 1158 and 1165 by the order of Andrei Bogolyubsky at the mouth of the Nerl River (where it flows into the Klyazma River). Great Prince Andrei spent 17 years of his reign in Bogolyubovo before he was murdered there in 1174.
Russian Orthodox Christians believe that Bogolyubovo was founded on the spot where Andrei Bogolyubsky saw a miraculous vision of the Theotokos (meaning "God bearer", Virgin Mary). The Theotokos appeared to him in a dream-like vision holding a scroll in Her right hand, and commanded him to build a church and monastery on the place of the vision. On that spot, the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl was built. It is on the World Heritage List of UNESCO since 1992.

The Czech state, formerly known as Bohemia, was formed in the late 9th century as a small duchy around Prague, at that time under dominance of the powerful Great Moravian Empire (which reached its greatest territorial extent during the reign of Svatopluk I from the House of Mojmír). After the fall of the Empire in 907, the centre of power was transferred from Moravia to Bohemia, under the Přemyslids. During the rule of Přemyslid dukes/kings and their successors, the Luxembourgs, the country reached its greatest territorial extent (13th–14th century). Life in the country was significantly affected by the Hussite wars, during which it faced economic embargo and crusades from all over Europe. Following the Battle of Mohács in 1526, the Crown of Bohemia was gradually integrated into the Habsburg monarchy as one of its three principal parts alongside the Archduchy of Austria and the Kingdom of Hungary. The Bohemian Revolt (1618–20) led to the further centralization of the monarchy including forced recatholization and Germanization. During radical reforms in the 18th century the Bohemian Crown was even de facto abolished (1749). In the 19th century the Czech lands became the industrial powerhouse of the monarchy and the core of the Republic of Czechoslovakia which was formed in 1918, following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian empire after World War I.

During the 16th century, northern German regions became the centre of the Protestant Reformation while southern and western parts remained dominated by Roman Catholic denominations, with the two factions clashing in the Thirty Years' War, marking the beginning of the Catholic–Protestant divide that has characterized German society ever since. Occupied during the Napoleonic Wars, the rise of Pan-Germanism inside the German Confederation resulted in the unification of most of the German states into the German Empire in 1871 which was Prussian dominated. Gorokhovets
Gorokhovets (Russian: Горохове́ц) is a town and the administrative center of Gorokhovetsky District of Vladimir Oblast, Russia, located on the highway from Moscow to Nizhny Novgorod. It also serves as a river port on the Klyazma River. Population: 14,015 (2010 Census preliminary results); 14,524 (2002 Census); 15,783 (1989 Census). The name of the town originates from the Russian word "горох" (gorokh, "peas").
Before the arrival of East Slavs, the region was inhabited by the Finno-Ugric people of Merya. Gorokhovets was first mentioned in a chronicle for 1239, when it was sacked by the Mongols. It is believed that a minor fortress had existed there for several preceding decades.
In 1539, the Tatars of Kazan were about to burn it but retreated upon seeing a ghost in a shape of a gigantic knight with a sword. After that, the mount where the apparition was seen came to be known as Puzhalovo ("frightening one").
The golden age of Gorokhovets is associated with the 17th century, when it was a merchandise centre for a large area, which comprised today's Vladimir and Ivanovo regions. A number of churches, monasteries, and chambers were commissioned by the local merchants at that time. The 17th-century belfries of Gorokhovets are particularly noteworthy.

Ivanovo
Ivanovo (Russian: Ива́ново; IPA: [ɪˈvanəvə]) is a city and the administrative center of Ivanovo Oblast, Russia. Population: 409,277 (2010 Census preliminary results); 431,721 (2002 Census); 481,042 (1989 Census).
Ivanovo has traditionally been called the textile capital of Russia. Since most textile workers are women, it has also been known as the "City of Brides". Probably the most famous of the city's female natives was the postmodern French writer Nathalie Sarraute.
It is home to Ivanovo Severny, which is one of the largest military airlift bases in Russia. Civilian air services are provided at Ivanovo Yuzhny Airport.
Ivanovo has several educational institutions: Ivanovo State University, Ivanovo State University of Chemistry and Technology, Ivanovo Medical Academy, Ivanovo Architectural Academy, Ivanovo State Power University(ISPU).
Ivanovo was created by merging the old flax-processing village Ivanovo (first documented in 1561) with the industrial Voznesensky Posad in 1871. Until 1932, its official name was Ivanovo-Voznesensk. Because of its textile manufacturing industry, Ivanovo earned the sobriquet of the "Russian Manchester" during the 19th century.

The settlement was founded before the Church of Boris and Gleb was built in 1152 by Yuri Dolgoruky.
Kideksha used to be a town, but, after having been destroyed during the Mongol invasion of Rus, it degraded to a small village.
Kideksha is a part of the Golden Ring of Russia and, since 1992, is one of Russia's World Heritage Sites (see White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal).

Kirzhach (Russian: Киржа́ч) is a town on the Kirzhach River in Vladimir Oblast, Russia, located in the western of the oblast, 125 kilometers (78 mi) west of Vladimir and 29 kilometers (18 mi) south of Alexandrov. The town was established in the 14th century as a sloboda assigned to the Annunciation Monastery. The latter was established by Saint Sergius of Radonezh, who lived in the area between 1354 and 1358. For most of its history, the abbey remained heavily dependent upon the Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra, which lies 48 kilometres (30 mi) to the west.
The diminutive katholikon, erected during the reign of Ivan the Terrible, conforms to the early Muscovite type of cathedral church. It is commonly regarded as one of the last and loveliest specimens of this conservative strain. An open gallery connects the cathedral with the nearby Saviour church, which has a square tower and a tent-like belfry. This church, commissioned by the Miloslavsky boyars in 1656, contains their family sepulchre. The 16th-century refectory with St. Sergius Church was demolished during the Soviet time.

Town is well-known because of tableware plant, founded by Alexander Kolchugin located here. Most of Russian tea glass-holders were produced in Kolchugino.

Kostroma

A part of the Golden Ring of Russian towns, it is located at the confluence of the Volga and Kostroma Rivers. Population: 268,617 (2010 Census preliminary results); 278,750 (2002 Census); 278,414 (1989 Census). It is served by Kostroma Airport.
The city was first recorded in the chronicles for the year 1213, but historians believe it could have been founded by Yury Dolgoruky more than half a century earlier.[citation needed] Like other towns of the Eastern Rus, Kostroma was sacked by the Mongols in 1238. It then constituted a small principality, under leadership of Prince Vasily the Drunkard, a younger brother of the famous Alexander Nevsky. Upon inheriting the grand ducal title in 1271, Vasily didn't leave the town for Vladimir, and his descendants ruled Kostroma for another half a century, until the town was bought by Ivan I of Moscow.
As one of the northernmost towns of the Grand Duchy of Moscow, Kostroma served for grand dukes as a place of retreat when enemies besieged Moscow in 1382, 1408, and 1433. In 1375, the town was looted by Novgorod pirates (ushkuiniks). The spectacular growth of the city in the 16th century may be attributed to the establishment of trade connections with English and Dutch merchants (Muscovy Company) through the northern port of Archangel. Boris Godunov had the Ipatiev and Epiphany monasteries rebuilt in stone. The construction works were finished just in time for the city to witness some of the most dramatic events of the Time of Troubles.

Murom

In the 9th century CE, the city marked the easternmost settlement of the East Slavs in the land of the Finno-Ugric people called Muromians. The Primary Chronicle mentions it as early as 862.[citation needed] It is thus one of the oldest cities in Russia. Circa 900 CE, it was an important trading post from Volga Bulgaria to the Baltic Sea.
Between 1010 and 1393, it was a capital of a separate principality, whose rulers included Saint Gleb, assassinated in 1015 and canonized in 1071, Saint Prince Konstantin the Blessed, and Saints Peter and Theuronia, subjects of an opera by Rimsky-Korsakov. It was the home town of the most celebrated East Slavic epic hero, Ilya Muromets. The town has a statue which shows Ilya holding the hilt of his sword in the left hand and a cross in the right.

Palekh (Russian: Па́лех) is an urban locality (a settlement) and the administrative center of Palekhsky District of Ivanovo Oblast, Russia. Population: 5,335 (2010 Census preliminary results); 5,814 (2002 Census); 6,202 (1989 Census).
Palekh has a very long history in Russian iconography, the art of painting Russian Orthodox icons for homes and churches. The village emerged as a leading center of Russian icon- and mural-painting in the nineteenth century.
A good example of the Palekh school are the murals and icons from the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross (built in 1762–1774).
Today, Palekh is known primarily for Palekh miniature. Following the October Revolution with its outspoken atheist ideology, around 1923, the Palekh masters of iconography began to paint papier-mâché boxes applying the same principles they had learned from painting icons. Palekh is the most renowned of four such famous villages, the others being Kholuy, Mstera, and Fedoskino, each producing similar, but clearly distinct artistic style.

Pereslavl-Zalessky
Pereslavl-Zalessky (Russian: Пересла́вль-Зале́сский, lit. Pereslavl, which is located behind the woods), also known as Pereyaslavl-Zalessky, is a town in Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia, located 140 kilometers (87 mi) northeast of Moscow on the main Moscow–Yaroslavl road and on the southeastern shore of Lake Pleshcheyevo at the mouth of the Trubezh River. Known as Pereyaslavl until the 15th century, it was founded in 1152 by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky as a projected capital of Zalesye.[citation needed] In 1175–1302, the town was the center of the Principality of Pereyaslavl. In 1302, the town became a part of the Grand Duchy of Moscow. Pereslavl-Zalessky had been devastated numerous times by the Mongols between the mid-13th century and the early 15th century. In 1611–1612, it suffered from the Polish invasion.
In 1688–1693, Peter the Great built his famous "fun flotilla" on Lake Pleshcheyevo for his own amusement, including the so-called Peter's little boat, which would be considered the forefather of the Russian fleet. The Botik (small boat) museum chronicles the history of the first Russian fleet and keeps one of the original model boats.

While the official name of the town is Rostov, it is better known to Russians as Rostov Veliky, i. e. Rostov the Great. Rostov Yaroslavsky is the official name of its railway station (due to its position in Yaroslavl Oblast); the town itself is hardly ever called by that name.
Rostov was predated by Sarskoye Gorodishche, which some scholars interpret as the capital of the Merya tribe, while others believe it was an important Viking trade enclave and fortress guarding the Volga trade route. First mentioned in the year 862 as an already important settlement, by the 13th century, Rostov became capital city of one of the most prominent Russian principalities. It was incorporated into Muscovy in 1474.

Sergiyev Posad
Sergiyev Posad (Russian: Се́ргиев Поса́д; IPA: [ˈsʲergʲɪjəf pɐˈsat]) is a city and the administrative center of Sergiyevo-Posadsky District of Moscow Oblast, Russia. It grew in the 15th century around one of the greatest of Russian monasteries, the Trinity Lavra established by St. Sergius of Radonezh. Town status was granted to Sergiyev Posad in 1742. The town's name, alluding to St. Sergius, has strong religious connotations. Soviet authorities changed it first to just Sergiyev in 1919, and then to Zagorsk in 1930, in memory of the revolutionary Vladimir Zagorsky. The original name was restored in 1991. Tourism associated with the Golden Ring plays a role in the regional economy. There is also an important factory of toys.

Suzdal
Suzdal (Russian: Су́здаль) is a town in Vladimir Oblast, Russia, situated northeast of Moscow, 26 kilometers (16 mi) from the city of Vladimir, on the Kamenka River. Population: 10,535 (2010 Census preliminary results); 11,357 (2002 Census); 12,063 (1989 Census).
The history of the town dates back to at least the year 1024. It is called Sursdalar or Sudrdala (the southern valley) in the Norse Sagas - which probably also is the origin of the town's name. For centuries it functioned as the capital of several Russian principalities. It forms part of the Golden Ring. It was granted city status in 1777.
After a decline in political importance, the town rose in prominence as a religious center with numerous monasteries and a remarkable ratio of churches to citizens: at one point, forty churches for four hundred families. Today, the town operates as an important tourist center, featuring many fine examples of old Russian architecture — most of them churches and monasteries. Walking through the town one might get the feeling that every third building is a church. Tutayev (Russian: Тута́ев) is a town in Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia. Population: 41,001 (2010 Census preliminary results); 42,644 (2002 Census); 39,822 (1989 Census).
Before 1918, the settlement was called Romanov-Borisoglebsk (Рома́нов-Борисогле́бск), and before 1822, when an order of the Tsar united them, there were two separate towns: Romanov (on the right side of Volga River) and Borisoglebsk (on the left side). Romanov has existed since the 14th century and Borisoglebsk—since the 15th century. In the 15th century, Romanov was ruled by the khans of Nogay Horde.
The majority of the population lives on the right side of the river (the former Romanov). The areas of town nearest to the Volga's right bank have many old wooden houses and historical buildings (including the stunning Resurrection Cathedral), but further away from the river, Soviet-era apartment buildings predominate. There is no bridge across the Volga in Tutayev, so people have to use a ferry or, alternatively, travel north to Rybinsk or south to Yaroslavl to cross.

Uglich (Russian: У́глич; IPA: [ˈuɡlʲɪtɕ]) is a historic town in Yaroslavl Oblast, Russia, which stands on the Volga River. Population: 34,505 (2010 Census preliminary results); 38,260 (2002 Census); 39,975 (1989 Census).
A local tradition dates the town's origins to 937. It was first documented in 1148 as Ugliche Pole (Corner Field). The town's name is thought to allude to the nearby turn in the Volga River.
Uglich had been the seat of a small princedom from 1218 until 1328 when the local princes sold their rights to the great prince of Moscow. As a border town of Muscovy, it was burnt several times by Lithuanians, Tatars and the grand prince of Tver.
Grand Duke Ivan III of Moscow gave the town to his younger brother Andrei Bolshoi in 1462. During Andrei's reign the town was expanded and first stone buildings were constructed. Particularly notable were the cathedral (rebuilt in 1713), the Intercession Monastery (destroyed by the Bolsheviks) and the red-brick palace of the prince (completed in 1481 and still standing).

Vyazniki
Vyazniki (Russian: Вязники) is a town in Vladimir Oblast, Russia. The town was formed in 1802 by merging the derelict fortress of Yaropolch with the merchant Vyazniki sloboda. Population: 41,252 (2010 Census preliminary results); 40,398 (2002 Census); 45,438 (1989 Census).
The strategic height overlooking the Klyazma River was of great importance for defending approaches to the medieval Russian capital of Vladimir. Naturally, a fortress was established there some time in the 12th century, most likely in the 1130s. The Yaropolk fortress took its name from one prince named Yaropolk. It was situated about halfway between the nearest Klyazma ports: Starodub-on-the-Klyazma and Gorokhovets.
After the Mongols destroyed the fortress in the 13th century, Yaropolk was next documented in the 1389 treaty between Vasily I and his uncle Vladimir the Bold. According to the 1672 population audit, Yaropolk had as little as 133 inhabitants. Annihilated by fire in 1703, the old settlement came to be dominated by the merchant sloboda of Vyazniki, situated slightly downhill and attested since the 14th century. In 1778, Vyazniki was granted town status.

Yuryev-Polsky was founded by Yury Dolgoruky in 1152. First part of its name derives from Yury's patron saint, St. George. The second part is derived from the word polsky meaning "in the fields" (see opolye for details). This specification was needed in order to distinguish the town from the earlier established fortress of Yuryev (nowadays Tartu), at the time located in the woods in what is now Estonia and then the biggest Russian settlement in the territory of the Chuds.
Upon Vsevolod III's death in 1212, the town was assigned to one of his youngest sons, Sviatoslav. It was that prince who personally designed the town's chief landmark, the Cathedral of St. George (1230–1234). It is the latest pre-Mongol construction in Russia, unprecedented in abundance of stone sculptures, and also the model for first stone churches in the Moscow Kremlin. In the 1460s, the cathedral's dome collapsed, thus burying most of unique sculptures which had adorned the cathedral walls. The collapsed roof was sloppily restored by a well-known Muscovite artisan, Vasili Yermolin, in 1471.

Mikhail Zaprudnov, a 64-year 'garmon' player (a type of Russian accordion) was the most enjoyable part in my three-day stay in Suzdal, Russia. The town by itself is quite remarkable, it is a part of the so-called Golden Ring, but Zaprudnov's original takes on traditional Russian tunes completely swept me off my feet. Hats off to Zaprudnov. He told me he had five kids to feed, the youngest being only one year old. A man as big as Russia herself.

Suzdal (Russian: Су́здаль) is a town in Vladimir Oblast, Russia, situated northeast of Moscow, 26 kilometers (16 mi) from the city of Vladimir, on the Kamenka River. Population: 10,535 (2010 Census preliminary results);[1] 11,357 (2002 Census);[2] 12,063 (1989 Census).[4]

History[link]
The history of the town dates back to at least the year 1024. It is called Sursdalar or Sudrdala (the southern valley) in the Norse Sagas - which probably also is the origin of the town's name. For centuries it functioned as the capital of several Russian principalities. It forms part of the Golden Ring. It was granted city status in 1777.
After a decline in political importance, the town rose in prominence as a religious center with numerous monasteries and a remarkable ratio of churches to citizens: at one point, forty churches for four hundred families. Today, the town operates as an important tourist center, featuring many fine examples of old Russian architecture — most of them churches and monasteries. Walking through the town one might get the feeling that every third building is a church. Although having over ten thousand residents, Suzdal still retains the look and feel of a small village with streams and meadows everywhere nearby, and chicken and livestock a common sight on the city streets, some of which are unpaved. This juxtaposition of stunning medieval architecture with its pastoral setting lends Suzdal a picturesque charm, and in the summer artists and easels are a common sight.
In March, the Suzdal tourist centre is home to the Open Russian Festival of Animated Film.
The Cathedral of the Nativity in Suzdal is one of the eight White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal, a World Heritage Site.

- Wooden Church of Saint Nicholas. This church was built in Glotovo Russia in 1766 and was recently moved to Suzdal in 1960 to be part of a museum of wooden architecture. The church is elevated off the ground about a story high from when it was moved across the country. This church is made out of all wood and represents the close relationship between wood and stone architecture and how precise the Russians were while building this back in 1766.
- St John the Baptist Church. This church was built in 1720, the same time that Saint Nicholas church was built. The amazing thing about this church is the difference between the types of architecture of the two churches that were built during the same time period. Whereas the Saint Nicholas church is all wooden the St John Church is made out of white plastered walls with wooden supports. The differences between the arches and textures and overall appearance is truly so different and is definitely a sight to see.
- The Saint Alexander Convent. This church was built in 1240 by an unknown architect. It is said that the princesses of Suzdal, Mariya and Agrippina, were buried here in 14th century. The old architecture with new improvements makes this church interesting and different.
- Convent of Intercession. The convent was found in 1264. In the center of this beautiful white walled convent is the cathedral of the Intercession; it was an add on built in 1518 by an unknown man. The interior of the cathedral has no paintings or stained glass, it is just plan white stone walls all around. The church was and still is one of the richest convents in Russia. The convent is the home of many nuns and is also the burial vault for twenty nuns of noble birth. Connected to the white stoned wall cathedral is an art museum you can tour. There are many beautiful paintings but none in the actual cathedral itself. This building is filled with beautiful arches and art created in the 16th and 17th century. Plus in the very heart of the convent is a restaurant to feed your appetite after all the site seeing.
