Czech Absinthe Huffing Ritual
Absintheology.com Paul Nathan demonstrates the Czech Huffing Ritual. Most absinthe enthusiasts shun any serving method involving fire, this one in particular. Here at Absintheology we don't judge, we just educate. This is a common method of consuming absinthe in Praque. It's a version of the backdraft. I personally spent the night face down in a gutter in Prague after a few of these so be careful. ... and no, it won't make you hallucinate.

Czechs Protest Anti-Japanese Riots in China
A group of Czech activists and supporters of Japanese culture were protesting against the anti-Japanese riots in China on Friday, in Prague's Wenceslas Square. [Jakub Zeman, Speaker]: "Huge anti-Japanese demonstrations take place in China and they develop into violence—burning down Japanese shops, insulting tourists and setting Japanese cars on fire." Cases of protesters attacking Japanese citizens and tourists have been arising throughout China over the last several weeks. [Jakub Zeman, Speaker]: "The problem is that the Chinese authorities themselves are approving of this violence and they are supporting it, which is definitely very bad." Incidents have reportedly been triggered by Japan and China's conflict over the Senkaku Islands. However Czech protesters say, the Chinese Communist Party are using the Senkaku Islands issue to stir up anti-Japanese sentiment and arouse protests. They say the regime's true purpose is to divert Chinese citizens' attention away from their upcoming leadership change and the party's worsening internal problems. [Jiri Borsky, Demonstration Participant]: "The Chinese authorities are not effectively preventing anti-Japanese protesters from carrying out waves of horrible atrocities against human beings. In all other cases, the regime is immediately suppressing all expression of people's own opinions, right at the beginning." Some Czech activists recited the heart sutra in Japanese, to show support to those many oppressed and persecuted ...

The 2011 Wimbledon champion beat Jelena Jankovic 6-4 6-1 following Lucie Safarova's straight-sets win over Ana Ivanovic. Tattooed candidate in gains ground in Czech presidential race
Despite being tattooed on 90 per cent of his body, Vladimir Franz, running in a surprising third place in polls ahead of this week's Czech Republic presidential elections. Mr Franz, an opera composer and painter, seems the most unlikely of candidates for a prestigious post previously held by beloved playwright-dissident Vaclav Havel and Vaclav Klaus, a professor credited with plotting the economic transition from communism to a free market. But he's not short of admirers in a country where voters are increasingly tired of politicians they say are corrupt and failing to deliver on years of promises, more than two decades after the fall of communism. Mr Franz has no political experience and confesses to little knowledge of economics. He says he only threw his hat in the ring after a group of admirers established the Franz for President initiative and begged him to shake up the race through his shock factor. But he's stirred up such goodwill that a leading economist offered his services for free and his campaign workers are also volunteers. He's only spent $25000 from donations on his campaign and hasn't put up any posters. Mr Franz burst onto the political scene with an eye-catching 88000 signatures at the end of 2012 - far more than the 50000 required by law. Not affiliated with any party, he has campaigned mostly on a platform highlighting graft, the importance of education and the nation's moral standing. "The (political) system is so enchanted with itself that it's lost ...

Zeman becomes Czech president, Milos Zeman WITH OVER 55% In First Czech direct presidential election
The Czech republic has held its first direct presidential election, and defying polls predicting they were neck and neck, the former Social Democrat prime minister Milos Zeman, 68, has won with over 55% of the vote. Zeman benefitted from strong support in the provinces, whereas his opponent polled heavily in Prague and other large urban centres. He was also credited for privatising the main banks and attracting foreign investment when prime minister. Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, a prince and member of one of central Europe's greatest aristocratic houses, struggled to overcome his public image of being unable to speak perfect Czech, and his propensity, aged 75, to nod off at public meetings. His conservative party also raised taxes, cut social benefits and became mired in several corruption scandals. The result makes it likely that the Czechs will tack further towards the EU as the outgoing head of state Vaclav Klaus is a leading eurosceptic.

Czech National Bank Vice Governor Hampl on the Czech economy and the eurozone
Subscribe to our newsletter at www.goldmoney.com GoldMoney's Alasdair Macleod interviews Vice-Governor Hampl of the Czech National Bank. They discuss the nature of the Czech economy, which is savings-driven, the Republic being a nation of small savers. This gives it an economy that has more in common with Germany than the rest of Europe. The economy enjoys a low-inflation environment, with a free-market approach. Since 1989, the economy has been driven by economic agents wishing to rebuild their wealth, and this has helped the Republic develop its economy more rapidly than its neighbours. The Czech National Bank feels it is not under pressure to reflate, because both the public and the government are wary of the destructive effect on savings. With current economic uncertainties in Europe, the economy has turned down as saving has intensified; but unlike other governments, the Czechs are not being panicked into reflation. Joining the euro is not on the agenda, being out of the question at the moment, nor does Mr Hampl personally expect the Republic to enter the eurozone. Meanwhile, Mr Hampl says that the Czech banking system is stable and well-capitalised, with little cross-border loan exposure; and even though some of the banks are foreign-owned, they are effectively ring-fenced from problems their parents may or may not have. Hampl described Czech banks as cash-cows, whose loan exposure is comfortably covered by deposits. On gold, My Hampl was less forthcoming, saying ...
